Set in 19th-century America, Three People begins with three boys born on the same day but into strikingly different worlds. Pliny Hastings is the adored son of a wealthy liquor merchant, Bennie Phillips is raised in a comfortable middle-class home, and Tode Mall grows up in crushing poverty with a drunken father and a mother whose desperate final prayer is that her son will never touch rum. As the boys grow, their lives unfold along very different paths, yet each remains bound to the same dangerous force: a culture that excuses, profits from, and is quietly damaged by drink. The novel follows Tode in particular as he struggles against ignorance, hunger, and social contempt, trying to build an honest future and a new identity for himself. Around him move ministers, merchants, friends, and family members whose choices reveal how temptation reaches into every class of society. Part coming-of-age story and part moral drama, the book explores how upbringing shapes character, how faith and persistence can challenge a bleak beginning, and how one generation's habits can threaten the next. The central question is whether these three boys can escape the legacies handed to them before those legacies claim their futures.
