Seeing Christ in All Scripture: Jesus the Prophet, Priest, and King

How does the Bible all fit together?

Scripture contains history, poetry, prophecy, law, sacrifices, priests, kings, and countless individual stories. At times, it can feel like we are reading disconnected pieces rather than one unified story. But from Genesis to Revelation, Scripture tells one story—the story of God’s plan to redeem His people through Jesus Christ.

In this episode of Seeing Christ in All Scripture, we explore one of the clearest ways the Bible reveals this unified story: the threefold office of Christ as Prophet, Priest, and King.

Throughout the Old Testament, prophets spoke God’s Word, priests mediated between God and His people, and kings ruled over God’s covenant people. Yet every prophet, priest, and king ultimately fell short, creating an expectation for Someone greater.

That Someone is Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the final Prophet, who perfectly reveals God. He is the perfect Priest, who offers Himself as the once-for-all sacrifice for sin. And He is the eternal King, the promised Son of David whose kingdom will never fail.

When we understand Christ’s threefold office, we begin to read the Old Testament differently. Moses, David, Solomon, the prophets, the priesthood, the sacrifices, and the kingdom are not isolated stories. They are part of a larger story pointing us to Christ.

As Jesus taught after His resurrection, “in all the Scriptures” the things concerning Himself were revealed (Luke 24:27).

We need Christ.

He is the Prophet we must hear, the Priest we can trust, and the King we must follow.

In this episode of Three Questions for Reading the Bible, Scott Dollar explores the second question for reading Scripture faithfully: How does this passage function?

To answer that question, we look at the biblical distinction between Law and Gospel. The Law reveals what God requires—His holiness, righteousness, and our sin and inability to meet His perfect standard. The Gospel reveals what God provides—Jesus Christ, His perfect obedience, His substitutionary death, His resurrection, and the righteousness and forgiveness given to those who trust in Him.

Scott explains how understanding Law and Gospel guards us against moralism, legalism, and antinomianism, while helping us see how the whole Bible unfolds the story of God's grace in Christ.

We also explore how Law and Gospel work together throughout the story of redemption, how the Mosaic Covenant points us toward Christ, and how Jesus' command to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind exposes our need for a perfect Savior.

Most importantly, we see that the Bible is not ultimately a book about what we must accomplish for God, but the story of what God has accomplished for us in Jesus Christ.
