  • 172 – Sam Edwards

Sam is a Lead Android Engineer at Capital One, Google Developer Expert for Android and Instructor at Caster.IO. He has been working with Android since 2011 and has over 14 years of professional experience with software development. Check out https://handstandsam.com where he shares tips and tricks about Android and software development.

Talk: DIY Dependency Injection with Kotlin

Dependency Injection seems like this SUPER complex topic that only the most senior developers understand. At the end of the day, it’s just “inversion of control” where instances of objects/classes are provided to you, instead of created by you. Kotlin’s language features allow us to do this concisely, without a library, and in this talk I’ll show you how to DO IT YOURSELF. This talk will demystify dependency injection and help you understand the huge benefits it provides for testing, maintainability and modularity.

    Talk: Debugging Your Node.js Apps

Are you still console-logging all of your Node.js code? Would you like to learn to debug with zero configuration? How about debugging docker? Or logging messages without changing your code with console.log? Would you like an easier way to pair when you just need a second set of eyes to debug your app? Join me and learn how easy it can be to find and squash those bugs in your code!

Talk: End-2-End Machine Learning on GCP

Machine learning is hard, but setting up pipelines around ML shouldn’t be. We will go through build a ML model on local, deploying it to Google Cloud ML engine and then use the exposed APIs to get predictions.

  • 169 – Joey deVilla

Joey deVilla is the Lead Product Manager at Sourcetoad, a development shop in Tampa, and an author on the Android Team at the tutorial site RayWenderlich.com. In former lives, he’s been a platform evangelist at SMARTRAC, GSG Telco, and Shopify. He was also at Microsoft, where he was a Windows Phone Champ, and tried in vain to make Windows Phone happen. In his spare time, Joey wreaks havoc on karaoke bars with his rock and roll accordion performances.

    Talk: Jumping into Jupyter Notebooks

Jupyter notebooks are tools for people who work with data to collaborate. IBM uses them to “distill data into insights”, Netflix uses them to scale up their ability to work with their copious amounts of data, and you can use them to craft reports that completely show your work — the data you collected, the code you use to process it, along with your writeup of your findings and reasoning.

In this talk, I’ll walk you through the process of creating your first notebook, and using it to write your first data analysis report, complete with an executable part that performs the analysis, and a human-readable part that contains your conclusions. If you want to get into data science, Jupyter notebooks will be a key part of your toolkit, and this talk is your opportunity to get started!

  • 168 – Santosh Hari

Santosh is a Microsoft Azure MVP and a public speaker who has spoken at tech events including codecamps and regional/international conferences. He is an Azure Consultant @ Nebbia Tech and brings 20 years of experience in the software industry. He has co-authored multiple approved software patents. Santosh is deeply involved with the local community as leader of the Orlando .NET User Group and co-organizer of the Orlando Codecamp. He also runs a boutique software consulting company with his wife.

Talk: Not all data is created equal: NoSQL

This talk is an Intro to NoSQL and an impassioned argument on why you should never host your own NoSQL instance. Do you work on MySQL, SQL Server, Postgres (or other RDBMS) full time? Have you ever wanted to dip your toes into the NoSQL world? Ever wonder about the hype surrounding NoSQL? What is the difference between MongoDB, Redis, Neo4j, and Cassandra? Get a gentle intro to the NoSQL world and more importantly, when to use it and when not to use it. More important, we will discuss decision metrics for picking a cloud-based NoSQL solution that is right for you; between major cloud providers like Google (Datastore), Amazon (DynamoDB), and Microsoft (Azure CosmosDB). We’ll have a spirited discussion on why cloud based/managed NoSQL hosting will help you avoid becoming a news story for the wrong reasons
