Tim and Friends

Hello friends! First off, happy new year! It’s been a while since the last episode, so I want to give a few quick updates. I’ll be abandoning the season format; I don’t publish often enough to get a consistent theme and series together. That said, I plan to continue interviewing my amazing friends to share their stories in hopes that their lessons are applicable to your life.

I’ve had such a fun time starting this podcast, and I learned so much in the process and from all of my guests. I won’t delve into that here, but if you’re interested, jump over to this blog post to read more about my experiences.

Also, I want to thank everyone who tuned in; I’ve been so overwhelmed by the love and support since I’ve launched, and a special thanks to my wife who listened to every episode, pre- and post-production. I also have to give a huge thanks to today’s guest. She was instrumental with her feedback, inspiration, and encouragement to getting this launched. And turning to today’s episode…

I’m speaking with one of my oldest friends, Geraldine. I’ve known her for nearly 25 years, and I can safely say that she’s such a unique soul, with a wide variety of personal and professional interests. 

This intro I’m about to give won’t do justice to Geraldine’s actual experience, but to give a short bio, Ger started her professional career in fashion as a merchant. She’s held  a variety of positions since then, and I’d say she’s made a name for herself as a community builder, including her time as a community strategist for one of the biggest names in EDM, the one and only Kaskade. For the past few years, Ger has poured herself in the cannabis world, helping companies develop their brands. She’s the founder of her own brand consultancy, the Art and Times of Chill, and the host of the podcast “Amplify Your Chill.”

We talk only about a few of those interests, which is why I hope to get her on again soon.

Ger talks about how she trusts her intuition to set and follow her goals, and she highlights the importance of effective communication and collaboration to move towards her goals.

She gives a brief, but thoughtful introduction into the cannabis world, making me personally much more curious about the space. She quickly let me know, in the nicest way possible, that there’s more to the space than just smoking pot, which, sadly, was how I broached the conversation.

In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Danyel who I’ve known for almost 25 years. I’ve relied on her for advice and guidance throughout our entire friendship. We focus a lot on parenthood in this conversation, even more so than past episodes. Still, I don’t think the lessons here are any less transferable to non-parents or anyone not considering having kids.

We discuss how to thrive under less than ideal circumstances, like the loss of a parent, infertility, or even a global pandemic.

Her workload and work ethic are truly inspiring, especially as I’m trying to figure out parenthood and even adulthood. She makes everything look effortless, even though it’s anything but that. We discuss how a focus on self-care enables all that she does.

In today’s conversation, I speak with my friend Erin who has dedicated her professional life to social impact. We discuss how she discovered this passion, and how she was able to parlay her educational training into this passion.

As someone who has worked on women’s rights, I was really excited to talk to her about how to raise feminist boys.

My favorite nugget from the conversation was Erin’s thoughts on work-life balance, that aligning oneself with a broader mission and group of people for that mission means that you are one of a whole army of people trying to move the ball forward. And in that context, we can allow ourselves to take care of ourselves.

In this episode, I speak with my friend Bryan, a Major in the U.S. Air National Guard. He just returned from a two and a half month deployment in Qatar. I wanted to speak to him about how his experience in the military, and especially his looming deployment, impacted his parenting.

I learned a lot from Bryan during this talk, including that priorities may shift over time, and that’s okay. We discuss how he found a way to serve his country at the same time as serving his wife and kids.

I believe that we as society could use more empathy these days. Sometimes, we can find inspiration to help us build up our empathy. Bryan talks about how having kids helped him become more empathetic with his patients. And lastly, we talk about how sometimes it’s the simple things in life that keep us grounded.

In this episode, I speak to my friend Spencer. I learned a lot from him, including some specific talking points for my kids when talking about race, about respecting everyone, and also standing up for what’s right. I appreciated how openly he talked about his experiences, and I think it’s important to underscore that we were both only talking about our unique perspectives, and that his experience is only his experience.

But I think that’s the beauty of these conversations: there’s always something to learn from anyone that can generalize to everyday life for everyday people. And perhaps the biggest lesson I took away from my conversation with Spencer is that our intentions, words, and actions can have lasting impacts. And it’s incumbent on us to take accountability for ourselves, and to always ask “why” we do the things we do.

This conversation was far too short. After re-listening to the episode, I realized there was so much I didn’t get a chance to delve into, like his great grandmother’s experience growing up in Georgia in the early 1900s, or his father’s side of the family as members of the Black Panthers. Needless to say, I hope to have him on again soon.

And the last thing: we use some pretty strong language during this conversation. We talked a lot about race, and we used specific examples of derogatory language that we’ve heard.

Tim and Friends is a podcast dedicated to learning from my friends. They all have stories to tell, and in those stories are failures, successes, regrets, and pride. What I want to do is distill those lessons down in a way that might transfer to your own life.

In Season 1, I’m going to explore learning through the lens of fatherhood. I think our personal experiences shape how we become parents, things like how our parents raised us, the neighborhood we grew up in, the way teachers, friends, and coworkers treated us, how the media portrayed someone who looks like us, and the list goes on. I also think that parenthood shapes us as individuals and how we approach the world.
