This is the second in our four-part series on core leadership skills.
In 1831 Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote “It is a luxury to be understood,” and it is still a luxury in the modern day. Perhaps even more so, given the number of modes of communication and fractured attention.
Communication is at the very core of your leadership. Without it, you have nothing. Which is why working on your communication skills is so important.

Dr. Marshall Goldsmith has worked with hundreds of very high achievers throughout his career as an executive coach. And in doing so, he noticed something: happiness does not come from achievement.
So he wrote his latest book, The Earned Life, to address that. It will start you on a fresh journey that goes beyond your last achievement and helps you minimize your regrets, allowing you to live the life you were meant to live.
We are living an earned life when the choices, risks, and effort we make in each moment align with an overarching purpose in our lives, regardless of the eventual outcome.

Join us as we embark on a four-part series on core leadership skills.
Inscribed on the Temple of Apollo in the 5th century B.C., the phrase “Know thyself” is considered a universal truth. So it’s appropriate that the first leadership skill we’re exploring is self-awareness.
Too many leaders are tone-deaf or ego-driven to be self-aware. And yet, it’s probably the single most important leadership skill, as it makes it possible for other skills to grow.

There are many resources out there for self-employed business owners. But when it comes to Jeffrey Shaw’s approach, it’s resonant with Timeless Leadership.
Jeffrey’s book The Self-Employed Life: Business and Personal Development Strategies That Create Sustainable Success helps business owners focus on the values that are important to them and develop their own ecosystem for success.
Built on the idea that your level of success rarely exceeds your level of personal development, it provides a three-part formula to make lasting change: personal development, business strategies, and daily habits.
Jeffrey provides practical and easily implementable ideas to help you grow, find what works, and keep it going.

A day is missing from the calendar.
Just gone. Vanished. Stolen.
Who absconded with 24 hours and why would they do such a thing? More importantly, what am I even talking about?
It all ties in with Leap Year (2024 happens to be one of those).
In conjunction with that, I’ll be speaking at ActiveCampaign’s #MakeMoreTime Leap Day Extravaganza — a round-the-clock airing of free sessions to help you become more efficient and effective.
My 15-minute session, Taking the Time to Avoid the Common Mistakes of a First-Time Leader, airs at 9:15 pm PST on February 28:
The first time we’re given a leadership position, it’s exciting and daunting. Exciting that our expertise and potential has been recognized, but daunting in that it’s something we’ve never done before. In making this shift from individual contributor to executive, it’s important to remember that what got you here isn’t what you need to get you to the next level.
In this session, executive coach and communications strategist Scott Monty will give you three essential lessons — tips he gives his coaching clients — that will help you be successful in your journey as a first-time leader.
So join me. Register for free at www.leapday.live/scott. All talks will be available as replays.
There’s so much to learn,
When we’re busy with [waves hands around] life, we can miss out on things that are essential for us to see. Or not see, as the case may be.
Who we are is reflected in how we show up (or don’t) and what we choose to say (or not). Those things that aren’t seen can send some of the most powerful messages.
And we can learn a lot about other people by paying attention to those details.

“What is essential is invisible to the eye.” — Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, 1943
“Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?”“To the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime.”“The dog did nothing in the night-time.”“That was the curious incident,” remarked Sherlock Holmes. — Arthur Conan Doyle, 1892
“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.” — Fred Rogers

Leaders, by their very nature, tend to see things differently than other people. One of the terms we’re hearing more about, particularly in the workplace, is neurodiversity.
And Peter Shankman is helping companies understand what that means and how they can benefit from it, through his speaking, his books Faster Than Normal and The Boy with the Faster Brain , and his podcast Faster Than Normal.
He joins Timeless Leadership to share some of his observations about living with ADHD and how there’s hope for everyone — particularly children — to live productively and unselfconsciously with this superpower.

Communication is the bedrock of leadership, and it’s based on a leader’s ability to think and to write — which in turn is built on being a reader.
The connection between leadership, storytelling, communication, and reading is immutable, and if you’re willing to embrace curiosity and lifelong learning, you’ll find the world of leadership awaits.
And you won’t want to miss a story about a literary hoax in this episode…

Quotes from this episode
“Writing comes from reading, and reading is the finest teacher of how to write.” — Annie Proulx
“The greatest part of a writer’s time is spent in reading, in order to write: a man will turn over half a library to make one book.” — Samuel Johnson, 1775
“When you reread a classic, you do not see more in the book than you did before; you see more in you than there was before.” — Clifton Fadiman
“When you sell a man a book, you don’t sell him 12 inches of ink and glue―you sell him a whole new life.” — Christopher Morley

If you’ve ever thought about writing a book, this is for you. If you’ve ever read a business book and wondered what goes into it, this is for you.
Josh Bernoff helps nonfiction authors succeed. He’s been doing it with a high degree of success himself and has documented how you can in his latest book: Build a Better Business Book: How to Plan, Write, and Promote a Book That Matters (Amplify 2023).
He brings us on a journey of the struggles and rewards of writing a book, including everything from being a pantser vs. a planner, proposals and agents, marketing, and more.

We’re living in a post-truth society. Truth and facts matter — not only because they provide a foundation of reality, but because when we’re truthful, we tell the world who we are.
As leaders, the truth matters more than we might like. Honesty, transparency, trust, and loyalty are on a continuum, and truth is the foundation of that.
