EFF leader Julius Malema has come up with a theory about what may have caused the fire that gutted parts of the National Assembly building in Cape Town.

Addressing the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday, Malema shared his belief that negligence led to the blaze that ripped through the building earlier this month.

He said he believes rats that inhabit the parliamentary precinct ate electrical wires and that caused the spark.

Malema was reacting to Lamola’s apparent interest in contesting for the position of ANC deputy president at the party’s national elective conference in December. Lamola recently called for “new blood” to swell the leadership ranks of the ANC.

Justice and correctional services minister Ronald Lamola announced the 2021 matric results of prison inmates on Monday.

Lamola said 147 inmates passed out of the 191 who registered to write matric last year.

He said eight of the schools achieved a 100% pass rate, and “82% of our pupils qualify to register at university or college.”

Education expert and University of Johannesburg associate professor Nicky Roberts says the matric class did well, especially given they experienced a full year of Covid-19 and associated disruptions.
