Following a series of talks between the government and the road freight industry, an agreement was reached on Monday. An action plan aimed at addressing challenges facing the industry was adopted. Among the main challenges the industry faces is the hiring of foreign truck drivers. The adoption of the action plan follows recent blockades of the N3 by disgruntled truck drivers.

Eskom has warned South Africans who are battling freezing conditions to brace themselves for potential load-shedding. In a statement released on Monday, Eskom cautioned the public that because of continued shortage of generation capacity, “the power system is very constrained for this evening and for the next few weeks. “Eskom cautions that as the shortage of generation capacity persists, the system will continue to be constrained with an elevated risk of load-shedding over the coming weeks.”

Addressing a media briefing, transport minister Fikile Mbalula referred to the challenges facing the trucking industry. He said the blocking of roads by truck drivers equalled economic sabotage. His department has been engaging the trucking industry and other relevant role players since December 2021, including the issue of employing foreigners.

Climate change has become a harsh reality which has resulted in significant social, economic and environmental challenges globally. Globally the response to climate change has over the years gradually gained momentum however much remains to be done in developing nations such as South Africa who are among some of those who will face the greatest effects of the crisis. According to youth climate change activist Otsile Nkadimeng, the youth have to be at the forefront of dealing with this significant crisis.

Activists argue that the school curriculum is misguided, African languages are overlooked and language problems are silencing pupils.

Language expert Dr Xolisa Guzula and diversity expert Asanda Ngoasheng say the basic education department should issue a directive for transformation in the curriculum.

“Learners are silenced because they can’t express themselves,” Guzula said.

The high court in Pretoria on Tuesday granted a postponement application in the trial of five men accused of murdering soccer star Senzo Meyiwa. . The application was brought by the attorney for accused 5, advocate Zandile Mshololo, due to the issue of the second docket in the trial which she alleged was not known to her and her client until recently.

The high court in Pretoria heard on Monday that the second docket in the murder case of soccer star Senzo Meyiwa "held no merit". This is based on a letter submitted to the court from the Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority's office stating that the docket was an internal opinion by a junior advocate and the director of public prosecutions maintains that it does not have any status.

President Cyril Ramaphosa engaged with media during a briefing in Cape Town on Friday where he answered questions relating to a number of issues concerning his office. Ramaphosa also faced much-anticipated questions about the theft of cash from his farm, criminal allegations levelled against him and the suspension of public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane who had announced she would investigate the matter.

SA Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan has dismissed corruption allegations involving the buying of Fun Valley Project as “utter rubbish” despite the Hawks investigating the matter.

Jordaan is being accused of allegedly inflating the amount Safa paid when they bought the Fun Valley Pleasure Resort property south of Johannesburg to turn it into a national technical centre.

The Western Cape High Court has ruled against suspended public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane hours after President Cyril Ramaphosa suspended her.
