Fired ANC member Carl Niehaus on Monday said there were plans for national mass action to protest against President Cyril Ramaphosa after the 2020 robbery at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo.

Hundreds of Scenery Park community members organised a candlelight vigil and march to the Enyobeni tavern on Wednesday. They demanded closure of the venue and the removal of its owner from the area after the mysterious deaths of 21 children there on Sunday. Among them was an elder who called on the youth to realise that alcohol was “nothing and not important”. A local high school pupil also spoke to TimesLIVE and highlighted some of the issues the incident had brought to light.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says it is awaiting the formal tabling of an improved wage offer from Eskom.

The electricity utility is said to be willing to increase its wage offer to 7% when it meets trade unions for renewed negotiations on Friday in a bid to entice wildcat strikers back to work and to reduce higher stages of load-shedding.

NUM national spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu on Thursday rejected a report that it and the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) had rejected this offer.

ANCYL members called on the government to take action by ensuring the youth are given conducive environments for development so that such tragedies could be avoided.

The SA Human Rights Commission has opened an investigation into the deaths of 21 teenagers at an Eastern Cape tavern on Sunday. The investigation relates to discrepancies uncovered by the commission after speaking to community members and officials, including from the provincial police and the Liquor Board about the reporting of unlawful operations at the tavern.

According to SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) Buffalo City treasurer Nomthunzi Mbiko, they had raised grievances about the tavern’s unlawful operations before the incident.

Minister of public enterprises Pravin Gordhan is briefing the media on Tuesday night following the implementation of stage 6 load-shedding by embattled power utility Eskom.

Eskom will implement stage 6 load-shedding from 4pm until 10pm on Tuesday.

The power utility announced that this was due to the unlawful industrial action under way at their plants.

Eskom sees a “very real risk” of having to implement stage 6 power cuts by 5pm on Tuesday, after 10 generation units went offline overnight.

Eskom ramped up power cuts to stage 4, requiring up to 4,000 megawatts to be shed from the national grid late last week, after labour protests linked to deadlocked wage talks. Under stage 6, 6,000MW needs to be shed from the grid.

The utility plans to meet union leaders again on Tuesday to try to resolve issues relating to the strike, Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter said.

EFF leader Julius Malema has reacted to the final state capture inquiry report released last week, saying it is “gossip” and that chief justice Raymond Zondo "wasted" R2bn as chair of the inquiry.

Malema said the EFF is the rightful replacement of the ANC and will make education compulsory.
