The owner of East London's Enyobeni tavern and two employees have been arrested as the forensic investigation into the deaths of 21 teens continues.

Brig Tembinkosi Kinana said the 52-year-old owner and staff, aged 33 and 34, were arrested at the weekend and on Tuesday afternoon by a team of detectives working on the Scenery Park tragedy, when patrons collapsed and died on June 26.

Defence advocate Malesela Teffo, who was representing four of the five accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, on Tuesday announced that he was withdrawing from the case. Teffo said he was quitting  because of the harassment he claimed to have been subjected to by the judge, the police and the National Prosecuting Authority.

The inquiry into suspended public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office started on Monday. The hearing began with opening statements by one of the committee’s evidence leaders and by Mkhwebane’s legal team led by advocate Dali Mpofu. According to Mpofu, Mkhwebane's suspension was "premature" and "biased".

Police minister Bheki Cele says an 11 member detective team is investigating the murders at a Soweto tavern. The minister said 137 spent cartridges were found at the scene of the weekend massacre.

The justice, crime prevention and security (JCPS) cluster on Friday gave an update on progress made after the findings and recommendations of an expert panel on 2021's July riots. It was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Defence minister Thandi Modise and minister of police Bheki Cele reported on the arrests and criminal cases against various perpetrators, including government officials.

Public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan was heckled by attendees at a public lecture in Johannesburg on Thursday evening.

Gordhan was speaking about the reform of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) at an event hosted by the Wits School of Governance as part of the university’s centenary celebrations.
