According to the Eastern Cape health department, an unknown amount of methanol was found in the blood of all 21 children who died at the tavern in East London on June 26. This was announced during an update by the police and the health department on Tuesday. The cause of death remains inconclusive.

Parliament’s impeachment inquiry into suspended protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office entered its second week on Monday.

The committee heard from former senior investigator at the PP’s office Tebogo Kekana, who reported directly to Mkhwebane. He reported "misconducts" he observed, including that Mkhwebane instructed they do not make adverse findings against politicians, including Ace Magashule.

Dali Mpofu, who leads Mkhwebane’s legal team, told the committee it may be improper for the witness to give evidence as it "may clash with a criminal proceeding that is under way". He cross-examined the witness who he first referred to as a "disgruntled employee" and questioned his claims of what he found to be odd.

At least seven people have been arrested after shootings in Alexandra township in the past two days. One murder weapon, empty bullet magazines and cartridges were also found, according to Bheki Cele. The police minister added that the death toll had risen to six, with four people said to be in hospital. The suspects are believed to be members of a local gang which has been terrorising the community. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation soon on Eskom and load-shedding, his spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said on Thursday.

Mangenya confirmed Ramaphosa is working on a plan to reduce the scale of rolling blackouts.

“Not just a plan, but a plan that can give some hope that even if the president does not say that load-shedding will not end tomorrow, the nation must have a sense that there is a credible plan that’s been worked on. It is sound and there is a sense of urgency to implement that plan.”

Ramaphosa has been under pressure to formulate a solution that will see an end to load-shedding which has cost the country billions.
