  • 24. Building a Tiny Home with The Hobohemians
On this episode of Tiny Conversations I talk to Kat Walters and Matthew Davey about their project to build a tiny home. The two call themselves the Hobohemians and they are building a 8′ x 20′ house on a flatbed trailer.

Kat and Matt first made the decision to build and then live in this home after a cross-continent tour in a camper smaller than the size of their future house. The experience changed them and their perspectives on living. I sat down with the two and spoke to them about how this project started, where it’s going, and how some of their values have changed. Kat and Matt are documenting their whole journey and you can check it out here. Do you have a great story for this podcast? Send me an email or tweet @briancauley. You can also subscribe to this Podcast in iTunes, Stitcher and pretty much anywhere else.

On this episode of Tiny Conversations I talk to Stefanie Teitelman and Mike Smith about their social event “Fresh Summer Fiesta” and making meaningful connections. Stef and Mike started Fresh Summer Fiesta as a way to help people, they describe, as “consciously living” re-connect with themselves, other like-minded individuals, and their surroundings.

On this episode Stef, Mike and I talk about what it means to make meaningful connections, why it is important, and how living in a city can get in the way.

  • 22. Having a Transgender Partner and Parent with Alison and Jonah Brooks
On this episode of Tiny Conversations I talk to Jonah and Alison Brooks about having a transgender parent and partner. I wasn’t until Dee and Alison were married, and Jonah was born, that Dee realized she was transgender and came out to both Alison and Jonah.

On this episode I talk to Alison about what it was like to learn this about her partner and go through a divorce. I ask Jonah what it was like for him to learn about this at age 6, and what it’s like for him now at age 11.

  • 21. Telling Emotional Stories with Alex Blumberg
On this episode of Tiny Conversations I talk to Alex Blumberg. If you don’t know who Alex Blumberg is, chances are you’re familiar with his work. He’s a former producer for radio shows like This American Life, Planet Money, and most recently the Podcast Start Up.

Alex’s success in radio and podcasting can best be attributed to his ability to tell great stories. What’s kind of awesome is that he quite generously will tell you what he believes makes a good story – emotion and anecdote. On this episode I call Alex on the phone and talk to him about what it takes to get an emotional story and make exceptional audio stories.
Alex runs a company called Gimlet that produces three amazing podcasts. You can find and listen to all three here. If you know someone who would be great on this Podcast, please send an email or tweet @briancauley. • 20. Doing a Good Job with Helen Payne
On this episode of Tiny Conversations I talk to Helen Payne. I met Helen on a cold, Winter day at Arrowhead Provincial Park. There Helen is the Supervisor of all Guest Services, meaning she has a lot of responsibilities.

But Helen is a lot more than that. Watching her sharpen my skates, something she was doing with meticulous attention and expert craft, I realized that she values doing a good job. Actually, she has a standard of doing every and all jobs well. I think this is a standard that is scare and rare and so I decided to sit down and ask her why she cares so much about little things like sharpening skates, or umping baseball.

  • 19. How to Raise a Feminist with Tallulah Hershorn
On this episode of Tiny Conversations the tables are turned and I am the one being interviewed. Tallulah Hershorn is a friend and new mother who is worrying a lot about the kind of child she may raise. She asked me why I am such a vocal feminist and how she can raise her child to be vocal about social issues (like equal rights) as well.

In this episode I talk to Tallulah about my upbringing, letting your children ask questions, and the societal expectations I faced as a boy growing up.

  • 18. Long Distance Relationships with Patrick Maziarski
On this episode of Tiny Conversations I talk with Patrick Maziarski about long distance relationships. Patrick has been with his Partner for four years but has never lived together for more than a few months. They’ve broken up, got back together, and are trying to make it work.

In this episode I talk to Patrick a few days before his move to LA to finally be with his Partner in the same city. He talks about his hopes, fears, and why all the effort and heartbreak of a long distance relationship is worth it.

  • 17. Laurence Fournier Campeau on Connecting with Strangers through Dance
On this episode of Tiny Conversations I talk with Laurence Fournier Campeau. Laurence is one of the principal members of Ecouté Pour Voir – a contemporary dance piece where dancers perform their pieces for members of the public, one person at a time, to music on headphones worn only by the solo dancer and audience member – it is super intimate and unnerving.

I met Laurence performing in Trinity Bellwoods Park during Summerworks. There her and her partner performed alongside 4 amateur female dancers they recruited from the Centre for Mental Health and Addiction (CAMH). After I asked Laurene about connecting with people and empowering others through this kind of intimate dance. She told me about her work with the people from CAMH and Alzheimer patients and how it was truly transformative. We then sat down and had the conversation you hear in this episode.

On this episode of Tiny Conversations I talk with Patricia J Davidson. Patricia is HUGE Blue Jays and baseball fan and the author of “Baseball Biopolar” a website she started after having a nervous breakdown.
I met Patricia waiting in line for a Blue Jays game and was immediately struck by her passion for the game. We took our seats while watching batting practice and that’s when she revealed that baseball saved her life. We spoke about this and her views on baseball – both as something zen and religious.

  • 15. Lindsay Zier-Vogel of Love Lettering Project on Unexpected Discoveries

On this episode of Tiny Conversations I talk with Lindsay Zier-Vogel. Lindsay is the amazingly positive and poetic person behind “Love Lettering Project” – a project where people write letters about something they love and leave those letters for others to find.
I met Lindsay where it all started, Trinity Bellwoods Park in Toronto, to discuss why she began this project ten years ago and why she thinks unexpected discoveries are so important.
I was extremely touched by her energy and generosity and resonated with the explanation she gave about her project – “I’m a person of routine. I needed something to break me from that routine.”
