Some consider Tom Straus an expert in the backcountry. He has guided and led many trips throughout the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Quetico Provincial Park, an area covering 2.2 million acres in Minnesota and Ontario, Canada.He has backpacked, mostly solo, in the rain forests of Costa Rica; Denali National Park, Alaska; Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta and British Columbia Canada; Glacier National Park (many times) & Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana; Wind River Range, Yellowstone National Park, Teton/Bridger National Forest including the Grand Tetons in Wyoming; Rocky Mountain National Park & Estes Park, Weminuche Wilderness & San Juan Range in Colorado; Wasatch Mountains, Canyonlands National Park, Grand Gulch in Utah; Grand Canyon in Arizona; Olympic National Park, Cascade National Park in Washington; High Sierra Range in California; and Isle Royale National Park in Michigan. In 2015, at age 55, he thru-hiked the 2650 miles Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). In 2021, he thru-hiked the 489 mile Colorado Trail. In 2019, he completed his first 100 mile ultra marathon, Canal Corridor. In 2021, he completed the 50 mile Grand Masters Ultra Marathon, near Littlefield, AZ.
