A One Room School House History Lesson– To the Foothills with Robert Martin Episode 22 Jo Ann DunnJo Ann was born in Houston, Texas and earned a degree in elementary education at Southwestern University. She is married to Pem Dunn and has been living in Colorado since 1984. In Evergreen she was first involved with the Hiwan Homestead Museum as a tour guide and as a school aide. She was president of the Jefferson County Historical Society when they acquired the Medlen School. She applied for and was awarded a $20,000 grant from the State Historic Fund to restore the schoolhouse. She has been teaching an historic program since 1998.In 2015 she wrote the application that placed the school on the National Register for Historic Places. Jo Ann ‘s other passion is music and she has been a member of the Evergreen Chorale since 1987. She is blessed to share the singing with her daughter, Laurie and grandchildren Katrina and Kevin.Jo Ann and Pem have traveled extensively over their 59 years of marriage. The Elk Creek Fire Department was formed in 1948 by residents who recognized the need to provide the community with fire protection. Completely volunteer and dependent on donations and using WW II surplus equipment the Department provided a much-needed service to the community.In last 74 years the call volume has increased to approximately 1,325 calls per year. The department now has career, full time, firefighters that work 48 hour shifts as well as a highly trained and dedicated volunteer staff. He has guided and led many trips throughout the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) and Quetico Provincial Park, an area covering 2.2 million acres in Minnesota and Ontario, Canada.He has backpacked, mostly solo, in the rain forests of Costa Rica; Denali National Park, Alaska; Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta and British Columbia Canada; Glacier National Park (many times) & Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana; Wind River Range, Yellowstone National Park, Teton/Bridger National Forest including the Grand Tetons in Wyoming; Rocky Mountain National Park & Estes Park, Weminuche Wilderness & San Juan Range in Colorado; Wasatch Mountains, Canyonlands National Park, Grand Gulch in Utah; Grand Canyon in Arizona; Olympic National Park, Cascade National Park in Washington; High Sierra Range in California; and Isle Royale National Park in Michigan. In 2015, at age 55, he thru-hiked the 2650 miles Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). In 2021, he thru-hiked the 489 mile Colorado Trail. In 2019, he completed his first 100 mile ultra marathon, Canal Corridor. – To the Foothills with Robert Martin Episode 13 Corky KahnCorky Kahn started skiing at age 4 when his father taught him on old fashioned wood skis with, what, was called "bear trap" bindings. After high school Corky went to college and law school in Washington, D.C. at American University. While in school he began his career as a ski instructor at Seven Springs ski area in Western Pennsylvania. In 1963 he was offered a job as house counsel for an international company and moved his young family to Chicago, During the 1963-64 winter season Corky joined a newly formed ski patrol at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. Both of his children learned to ski at that area. In 1963-64 he went west to ski at the newly opened Vail Ski Area. He came back from that trip and told his wife that the west was where the great skiing was, and they should move there. As Corky rose in the ranks of the ski patrol, he became involved in teaching future and fellow patrollers. Snow science, search and rescue and avalanche control became a special interest. For a period of about 30 years, he would travel to the Wasatch range of Utah to help teach, both professional and volunteer patrollers the science and dangers of snow. During that same period, he would fill in with a heli-ski company as a guide leading group of skiers in ungroomed areas of the backcountry, reached only by helicopter.  Eventually, Corky’s children reached an age where he and his wife felt it was time to move to Colorado. He applied and was offered a job as a ski instructor at Keystone Ski area and taught skiing there for 11 years. During those years they made many friends amongst the instructor community. Just prior to the start of his 12th year, he received a call from one of those friends who asked if he would be interested in joining the Loveland Ski School. He met with his friend and the director of the school and discussed coming to Loveland. Corky agreed and is here today. Skiing has been an important activity in Corky’s life and the lives of his family. Both his children (now grown adults) are excellent skiers, and his son has followed Corky’s lead as a ski patroller. Most recently his oldest daughter has also become a patroller. The family tradition moves on.
