In review of the more recent episode descriptions it has become apparent that the connection between the description and the content is almost completely absent. In previous discussions this issue has been brought up and the committee of Toast was assured that there would be an increase in relevance at the least. This is contradiction to the contract that we have subsequetely created and are still awaiting your signature. Could you please sign this contract at the earliest convenience so that we may have actually take action against your insubordination.

URS Refinement

I'm not big into definitions or trying to constrain design to set terminology. But terms are useful in conveying ideas and communicating your design (mime just won't cut it for mechanical martini shakers). Two big words which are commonly viewed as interchangable are pass and fail but these are quite different. Two other words are equivalent and alternative. While alternative tends to be more easily understood. It is equivalence which is seen to be equivalent to the other (see what I did there - no you didn't. You read it.).

There are always alternate options. Some are better than others (see episode 118 for more). But sometimes you see an idea that is not necessarily better or worse but completely different to the way you may have thought to approach it, whether constraining yourself to a particular view point or based on your own knowledge and experience guiding you down a single path. To illustrate this I found examples of unique solutions that I would not have come to and tested what would Boer have done (WWBHD - a new motto for the podcast).

There are some many different ways to find, define and refine a problem. While one way may work in a given situation it is not always applicable in another. For example watching the news might give you an idea for a problem orientated around Covid (unless you are listening to this in the far future in which case, replace Covid with whatever apocalypse type event is currently annoying you). But watching the news will not always give you ideas on problems. Or at least it might not give you ideas for your particular field, interest or speciality. We do our best to discuss something around this sort of topic.

Don't you just wish that you could keep working on that design project? Keep going until the complete product is sitting in your hand (or in front of you at least - don't sit an aircraft on your hand). No? Is that just me? Ok what about once the project is done telling you to get back at it after your lecturer has told you how terrible a job you did in the first place? Still no? Really? Shame, I guess. Design never ends, there is always more work to do be done. Its engineering purgatory.

How to plan and setup a Toasting Design episode. Step 1) Completely ignore the problem until randomly hit with an inspiration from either a student, a book, a Guinness world record (our forte), a youtube video or a random epiphany in the middle of the night. Step 2) Spend a few minutes planning it out and telling the other host about it. Step 3) Get excited about the topic. Step 4) Completely drop it when you realise the conversation during the podcast has inspired something else entirely. Today that was jet packs.

As engineers the simple things that keep most NonEn's (non engineers) busy and entertained simply isn't enough for us. We need more. Such as taking chess and making all the pieces little robots that fight or play water polo in a pool of carbon dioxide that you have to run around in instead of swimming but cannot breathe in either. We like to take things up a notch with most of the fun figuring out how do actually set it up in the first place. So we did that.
