Epidemiologist Dr. Chari Cohen called the CDC advisory panel's recent decision an "epidemiological crime scene" and expressed deep dismay, stating there is no scientific argument to support the change in the long-standing recommendation for universal newborn hepatitis B vaccination.  On Friday, December 5, 2025, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted to end the decades-long policy (in place since 1991) of universally recommending the hepatitis B vaccine for all newborns. New Guidance: The new guidance, passed with an 8-3 vote, recommends "individual-based decision-making" in consultation with a healthcare provider for infants born to mothers who test negative for the virus. It also suggested the first dose be administered no earlier than two months of age if parents choose to wait.

However, the proposal faces long odds and is expected to fail due to widespread Republican opposition in the Senate. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on December 4, 2025, that Democrats would force a vote the following week on a "clean" three-year extension of the enhanced ACA funds. This proposal aims to maintain the current subsidy levels, which cap premiums for most enrollees and eliminate the income cap for eligibility. Every Democrat in the Senate is expected to vote in favor.
