Full transcript here 👋 Hey, good morning, good afternoon, good evening. This is your life. This is your chance. Listen.
The word for today is stretch. My daughter asked me this morning why I do 10 minutes of yoga after I wake up. Adult routines must seem foreign to kids whose bodies can excel on a diet of Pop-tarts and mac & cheese. I told my daughter that aging frames become less flexible and more fragile. In contrast, author Nassim Taleb describes the human body as antifragile. In his book, Antifragile, Taleb writes, “Some things benefit from shocks; they thrive and grow when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors and love adventure, risk, and uncertainty. [...] The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better.” Our bodies have the potential to continue becoming stronger, but it requires more effort as we age. Free time becomes less plentiful, and as a result, adults become reluctant to stretch in meaningful ways.
Today’s concrete challenge is to stretch yourself. If you need physical stretching, do it now. If you need a little randomness, go for a walk right now or turn on an unfamiliar radio station. Stay flexible in all aspects of life by embracing adventure, risk, and uncertainty.
If you want to commit, say the following phrase: “I will become stronger by stretching in some way right now.”
I’ll keep the music playing while you get it done, and don’t miss the soundtrack at the end of this episode.
Before you go, repeat the following soundtrack, “I am the kind of person who stretches myself because I am antifragile.”
