The World Health Organisation has revealed that a new coronavirus was discovered by Chinese scientists and may pose a threat to humans in the future. Researchers from Wuhan, China, where Covid-19 was first spotted in 2019, found this new virus amongst bats in South Africa. At the same time, they warned of its high death and transmission rate. According to experts, the NeoCoV virus is not new. It is associated with the MERS-CoV virus, in outbreaks in Middle Eastern countries in 2012 and 2015, and is similar to SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19 in humans. Coronaviruses are a wide range of viruses that can cause a variety of diseases, ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, SARS.

Going to the cinema, what are the chances to get Covid after that? What about the gym, unmasked? Or in our neighbourhood park? We know, and been told, that certain places and activities expose ourselves to coronavirus. A new study breaks down much of the guesswork and offers clear estimates about it, analysing past outbreaks, superspreader events as well as factors that could hinder the virus’ dissemination. It used a mathematical model which considers propagation factors however, it is not a perfect estimate, but it can help to answer some questions.

A team of scientists led by Drs Peter Hotez and Maria Bottazzi from the Texas Children’s Hospital Centre for Vaccine Development at Baylor College of Medicine has been developing vaccine prototypes for SARS and Mers since 2011. They reconstructed these vaccines to create the new Covid jab dubbed Corbevax, or “the world’s Covid-19 vaccine. This new vaccine is using a decade-old conventional method which would make the production and distribution cheaper and more accessible for those countries most affected by the pandemic and, of course, where other variants are likely to originate due to low inoculation rates. The difference between this vaccine and others in the market is that their creators do not intend to patent it, making it available to anybody with the capacity to make it.

With a languid world bereft of vaccines, England throws away Covid doses to the rubbish. A memo from the NHS reveals the reason: “lack of demand.” Those about-to-be-thrown vaccines were part of the booster campaign launched in December, but most of them will reach the expiry date in the next couple of weeks.
