The vaccine requirement is for all federal public servants and for travellers on commercial flights, trains and cruise ships.

Germany recommends mixing Covid-19 vaccines

The German Committee on Vaccination said that people who receive a first dose of AstraZeneca should get a mRNA vaccine as their second dose regardless of their age. 

The FDA in the United States authorised the administration of an additional dose of the mRNA Covid vaccine for people who have certain immune compromising conditions.

This move is amidst growing evidence that these people do not get adequate protection from the normal two-dose regimen from the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. 

SARS-CoV-2 is the causative agent of Covid-19, but we have to bear in mind that viruses evolve at a brisk pace. 

This is why just after a year and a half, the virus has mutated into several variants. One of them is the Delta, which is so far the most virulent and deadliest strain of SARS-CoV-2. Scientists have to be aware of all the mutations the virus undergoes while spreading in the world. Vaccines are still effective, but for how long?

Prof. Andrew Pollard, the chief of the Oxford Vaccine Group, asserted that reaching herd immunity with the Delta variant is not a possibility. 

He was giving evidence to MPs and said vaccines didn’t stop the spread of Covid, meaning the threshold for overall immunity in the population was “mythical”.

Booster shots for wealthy nations will not stop the pandemic. 

The gap between rich and poor countries is deepening by the use of a booster shot, only available in rich countries. 

While many nations are striving to get at least one shot for their people, the wealthy ones started providing a third jab.
