When I think of the past, I think it was not too shabby, to be younger: I practiced more sports, I often had carefree all-nighters with friends and I didn’t need to go to bed at sundown : -)
But as a teacher, this is what the past is:
When to use the passé composé?
Use the passé composé when an action happened only once, or was short and sudden, specific, actions that were completed at some point in the past, and when you are talking about precise information.
Use the passé simple often with words like this:
hier, avant-hier, hier soir, un jour, l’autre jour, la semaine dernière, l’année passée, soudain, tout à coup, jour de la semaine
When to use the imparfait?
Use the imparfait when you are talking about a habit in the past, something that kept on happening. Also use the imparfait when talking about what you used to do, when describing the weather, when telling time, talking about age, when you are setting a story in place or talking about emotions.
Use the imparfait with these narrating verbs
avoir, être, pouvoir, savoir and vouloir
Use the imparfait often with words like this
fréquemment, d’habitude, souvent, bien des fois, parfois, quelquefois, toujours, tous les jours/lundis, en ce temps-là, chaque année, le mardi, en été, etc…
