Friends of the Rosary, Today in the Gospel (Luke 8:1-3), we see people — the Twelve and several women disciples — following Jesus with practical love, supporting His mission with what they had. These women had been healed, freed, and restored, and now they support Him by accompanying Him. Grace received becomes generosity offered. “Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.” In the first reading (1 Corinthians 15:12-20), we see that Christ’s resurrection is the foundation of our hope and faith, but not a symbol, a nice idea, or a comforting belief. St. Paul is very direct: if Christ has not been raised, Christian faith collapses. Because Jesus rose, sin and death do not get the final word. That means our prayers, sacrifices, repentance, and love are not empty. They are joined to a living Lord. “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then neither has Christ been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then empty too is our preaching; empty, too, your faith.” “If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable people of all.” “But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” Ave Maria! Meanwhile, Saint Paul (1 Corinthians 3:1-9) warns against jealousy, rivalry, and attachment to human leaders rather than to God. One person plants, another waters, but God gives the growth. We must let God be the one who gives the growth. We can serve, help, pray, and work, but the fruit belongs to Him. Jesus heals, restores, and sends us beyond comfort into mission. Jesus’ word has real power to free, heal, and command the darkness to leave. Therefore, we ask to be filled with His Spirit. Friends of the Rosary, In the Gospel of Luke (8:19-21), Christ Jesus says that His true family is “those who hear the word of God and act on it.” The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.” Tuesday’s message is simple and direct: faith is not just listening, agreeing, or admiring from a distance. Friends of the Rosary, Today, September 21, we celebrate the Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist. As the author of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament, the apostle emphasizes Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises and tries to convince the Jews that their anticipated Messiah had come in the person of Jesus. Matthew was a publican, that is, a tax-collector for the Romans. His profession was hateful to the Jews because it reminded them of their subjection while robbing his own people and making a large personal profit. In addition, the Pharisees were seeing him as the typical sinner. Publicans were not allowed to trade, eat, or even pray with other Jews. One day, while seated at his table of books and money, Jesus looked at Matthew and said two words: "Follow me." That was all it took to make Matthew rise, leave his pieces of silver, and follow Christ. His original name, "Levi," in Hebrew signifies "Adhesion," while his new name in Christ, Matthew, means "Gift of God." The other outstanding mention of Matthew in the Gospels is the dinner party for Christ and His companions to which he invited his fellow tax-collectors. The Jews were surprised to see Jesus with a publican, but Jesus explained that he had come "not to call the just, but sinners." In the traditional symbolization of the evangelists, based on Ezech. 1:5-10 and Rev. 4:6-7, the image of the winged man is accorded to Matthew as his Gospel begins with the human genealogy of Christ.
