Friends of the Rosary,

Born of a wealthy Philadelphia family, Katharine Drexel (November 26, 1858, to March 3, 1955) used her inheritance to establish missions for the black and Native American peoples.

Wanting to be “their mother and servant,” she dedicated her life to supporting the education and well-being of marginalized communities.

St. Katharine Drexel founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and spent her life and fortune founding sixty schools throughout the West and Southwest.

Drexel’s legacy is an inspiring example of using one’s resources and influence to better society, transcending boundaries, and embracing the principles of compassion and justice.

She is the patron saint of racial justice and philanthropy.

In today's Sunday Gospel (Luke 6:39-45), Christ Jesus asks, "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?"

Our Lord invites us to entrust ourselves to people utterly dedicated to Christ.

We are invited to surrender to Christ, find salvation in him, and deliver good fruit for the Kingdom.

"A good tree does not bear rotten fruit,
nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.

For every tree is known by its own fruit.
For people do not pick figs from thornbushes,
nor do they gather grapes from brambles.

A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good,
but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil;
for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks."

Friends of the Rosary,

"Whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it."

These are words of Our Lord as we read in today’s Gospel (Mark 10:13-16).

A child-like attitude is needed to enter the Kingdom. Nor hardened heart nor arrogance.

In his own image, he made us so we can love as God loves.

The source of our existence is revealing to us,

"Let the children come to me; do not prevent them,
for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these."

In today’s Gospel (Mark 10:1–12), Jesus defines marriage as sacred. Marriage is a vocation and a deep sacramental commitment to God.

In recent years, this sacrament has been dramatically compromised.

Two people can come together purely for physical pleasure, for economic reasons, for psychological companionship, or even out of authentic love.
 
But that’s no reason to get married in church of Christ, before God.

Bishop Barron says, “Your marriage is not about you, it is about God and about serving God’s purposes, that it is, as much as the priesthood of a priest, a vocation, a sacred calling.”

“From the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.
So they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together,
no human being must separate."

With the hand, we reach out and grasp things. With the foot, we set ourselves on a definite path. We are the hands and feet of Christ on search. But if we fail because we place our energies on grasping at finite things or walk on pursuing glory, honor, power, or pleasure, what is our value for the Kingdom of Heaven?

Rather than human organs, we are souls meant for union with God. We are created to seek for the Divinity. That’s a well-spent life. So the question is, are we willing to spiritually puck out our eyes and abandon pleasure-oriented lives?

Christ Jesus invites us in the Gospel (Mark 9:41-50) to pursue a life of perfection.

“If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.
It is better for you to enter into life maimed   
than with two hands to go into Gehenna,
into the unquenchable fire.
And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off.
It is better for you to enter into life crippled   
than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna.
And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.
Better for you to enter into the Kingdom of God with one eye
than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna,
where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.”

“Keep salt in yourselves and you will have peace with one another.”

John said to Jesus (Mark 9:38-40),
“Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name,
and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.”

Jesus replied,
“Do not prevent him.
There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name
who can at the same time speak ill of me.
For whoever is not against us is for us.”

As we read today, Jesus teaches us that discipleship is not some personal privilege to be jealously guarded. Appreciation of the good deeds done by others is essential. We should always recognize the work.

In today’s Gospel (Mark 9:14–29), Jesus drives a demon from a deaf and mute child.

The boy fell to the ground, was rolling around in convulsions, foaming at the mouth, and grinding his teeth.

A mute spirit possessed him. Since childhood, he has often thrown himself into the fire and into the water to kill him, as the account of the Gospel of Mark.

The disciples were unable to drive it out, given their limited faith.
Then, the child was brought to Jesus, who healed him.

He said, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you:
come out of him and never enter him again!”

The Messiah took him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up.

Later, when He entered the house, his disciples asked him in private,
“Why could we not drive the spirit out?”

He told them, “This kind can only come out through prayer.”

Our Lord teaches us, “Everything is possible to one who has faith.”

Today, the Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, we learn in the gospel (Luke 6:27-31) that we must do all in our power to rid our minds of hatred.

"Jesus said to his disciples: To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back. (Luke 6:27-31)"

Among the Jews at the time of Christ and for centuries before (Exodus 21:23-25), "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, life for life" was the dominant practice.

But Christ set up the golden rule of fraternal charity in place of this Law of Talon.

Every man should genuinely love his neighbor, for he is his brother. Our interest in our neighbor must be spiritual.

If a neighbor offends us, he offends God. Our charity should help him seek God's forgiveness and to help them to reach heaven.

Today, February 22, we celebrate the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, renewing our assent to the Church's magisterium and unity.

This feast, celebrated since the early Christian era, commemorates the day Saint Peter delivered his first sermon in Rome. It celebrates the papacy and St. Peter as the first bishop of Rome.

St. Peter's original name was Simon. He was married with children and living and working as a fisherman in Capernaum when Jesus called him to be one of the Twelve Apostles.

Peter was one of the three with Christ in the Transfiguration of Christ and the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was the only Apostle to whom Christ appeared on the first day after the Resurrection. Peter, in turn, often spoke on behalf of the Apostles.

When Jesus asked the Apostles: "Whom do men say that the Son of Man is?"

Simon replied: "Thou art Christ, the Son of the Living God.”

And Jesus said: "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood have not revealed it to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to you: That you are Peter [Cephas, a rock], and upon this rock [Cephas] I will build my Church [ekklesian], and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven". (Mt 16:13-20)

In saying this, Jesus made St. Peter the head of the entire community of believers and placed the spiritual guidance of the faithful in St. Peter’s hands.

However, St. Peter was not without faults. He had fallen asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane instead of praying, as Jesus had asked him to do. He also denied knowing Jesus three times after Christ’s arrest.

Peter delivered the first public sermon after Pentecost and won many converts. He also performed many miracles and defended the apostles' freedom to preach the Gospels. He preached in Jerusalem, Judaea, and as far north as Syria.

He was arrested in Jerusalem under Herod Agrippa I, but miraculously escaped execution. He left Jerusalem and eventually went to Rome, where he preached during the last portion of his life. He was crucified there, head downwards, as he had desired to suffer, saying that he did not deserve to die as Christ had died.

The date of St. Peter's death is not precise. Historians estimate he was executed between the years 64 and 68. His remains now rest beneath the altar of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Jesus Christ, willing to begin the mystery of unity in His Church, chose Peter among all the twelve disciples.
