Jesus’ word has real power to free, heal, and command the darkness to leave. Therefore, we ask to be filled with His Spirit. Helping us understand what comes from God, trusting His authority, and letting His word bring freedom and peace into our lives. Friends of the Rosary, In today’s Sunday Gospel, from St. Matthew 18:21-35, we hear the story of the merciless servant, whom we all might judge as a mean, heartless man. But we'd better stop and think for a moment that we ourselves may be that merciless servant described in the parable. Every time we sin, we incur a debt to God’s loving, infinite mercy. Then can it happen that we can be so heartless and foolish as to refuse to forgive a neighbor for some offense he has committed against us? Will it be the fate of all unforgiving Christians a deserved punishment of the merciless? That day has not yet come for us. And we still have time to put our affairs in order. We can still forgive all our enemies from our hearts. If we do not, we are cutting ourselves off from the possibility of having our own sins and offenses forgiven by God. We might then have the word of our divine Lord, as we read in today's parable: "So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.” Also, September 13 marks the fifth apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, which occurred in 1917 at Cova da Iria in Fatima, Portugal. An immense crowd of around 30,000 to 40,000 pilgrims accompanied the three shepherd children—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta—to the site, hoping for a glimpse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Around noon, after a flash of light, the children saw Mary appear above the Holm oak tree. Our Lady told the children to continue praying the Rosary daily to bring an end to World War I. She stated that God was pleased with their sacrifices but instructed them not to sleep with the penitential ropes on, to wear them only during the daytime. Mary promised that during her final visit on October 13, Our Lord, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus would appear, and she would perform a great miracle so that all would believe. Friends of the Rosary, Today, we observe the feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, which celebrates the great privileges given to Mary and all the graces we receive through her intercession. The Hebrew name of Mary, Miryãm (in Latin, Domina), means lady or sovereign. We call Mary our Lady as we call Jesus our Lord, and when we pronounce her name, we affirm her power, implore her aid, and place ourselves under her protection. The feast of the Holy Name of Mary therefore follows that of her Birthday, as the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus follows Christmas. In accordance with Jewish custom, our Lady's parents named her eight days after her birth and were inspired to call her Mary. Mary invites us to call upon her name frequently and persistently, for she delights to hear and answer our prayers. To say her name is to express a word of hope. And this word of hope proclaims our salvation, for Mary was created to be the Mother of our Savior. Saint Bernard wrote, "Look to the star of the sea, call upon Mary in danger, in distress, in doubt, think of Mary, call upon Mary. May her name never be far from your lips, or far from your heart … If you follow her, you will not stray; if you pray to her, you will not despair; if you turn your thoughts to her, you will not err. If she holds you, you will not fall; if she protects you, you need not fear; if she is your guide, you will not tire; if she is gracious to you, you will surely reach your destination." Ave Maria! Friends of the Rosary, Nearly 3,000 souls perished on September 11, 2001, in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC, including 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, and 55 military personnel, followed by thousands more responders whose later illnesses stemmed from their selfless recovery efforts at Ground Zero. Today, 25 years after those horrific terrorist attacks, we honor those we lost and the legendary courage of our first responders — we must never forget. "Twenty-five years later, its memory lives on; in a new skyline, in simple plaques and great memorials, and in the photographs of first responders who were lost, still displayed outside of firehouses and police stations," Archbishop Ronald Hicks of New York said in a statement. "We also remember those who died and the extraordinary courage, service, sacrifice, and compassion that followed," Hicks said. This week, bishops across the country issued remarks, reflections, and prayers for the United States and the lives lost on September 11, 2001. Daily Masses will remember those who died as a result of the tragedy and mourn with their loved ones. We are all invited to join in prayer for the victims taken from us in acts of violence 25 years ago at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in rural Pennsylvania. And we lovingly embrace in prayer the victims’ families and friends, who still mourn the irretrievable loss of their loved ones in that tragedy. Amid the sorrow over the attacks, our faith is lifting us up and sustaining us, as many are turning to God in prayer with renewed intensity and a sense of unity. As conflicts intensify around the world, let us renew our commitment to be Christ’s instruments of peace in an increasingly fractured and divided world. In the midst of tragedy, God gives us opportunities to become instruments of His love. As St. Paul said, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Ave Maria! Come, Holy Spirit, come!
