Adultery may seem like an unusual topic for a Sunday morning sermon, but this commandment made God’s top ten. I think all of us would agree that it’s extremely relevant to our culture today. Jesus certainly intensified this commandment as He taught that it’s not technically just about adultery, it’s about sexual sin. The principle behind this commandment certainly is sexual purity.

The sixth commandment says, “You shall not murder.” Jesus took the action of murder and He spoke about the attitude behind it which is anger. He said if you have anger in your heart, you are violating this commandment and you’re in danger of judgment. What Jesus is doing is lifting this commandment out of a technicality and He’s showing the principle behind it has to do with anger in your heart towards other people.

Of all the commandments, we would probably say that we are the least likely to violate the sixth, “You shall not murder.” Yet this commandment is more complex than what it first appears. The fifth commandment is about learning to treat people with respect, beginning in the home. The greatest image that we have of God in the Bible is that of a father. We should honor Him first by acknowledging His great sacrifice , that He sent His Son to die for us, then we should honor Him with our obedience by living as He’s instructed us.

The Ten Commandments basically have to do with relationships. The principle behind the fifth commandment is one of honor and respect, specifically as it relates to our father and mother. We may not all become parents, but we all have parents. That is the most fundamental of all human relationships because it is our first and most influential Earthly relationship.

God made us and He understands us. He gave us a day not only to rest our bodies and to recharge our emotions but also to refocus our spirits and to shape our values. He is saying if you want maximum performance in your life, you need to balance work and worship.

The hard reality is that many marriages are struggling right now. Even though Love and Respect have cancelled, we as a church would still like to offer support to those in need and to those looking to be intentional about strengthening their marriage. So, in place of Love and Respect, we will be offering a free “Marriage Night” event.

Throughout the Bible there’s a distinction made between the people of Israel and Christians. That means the Sabbath, from the beginning, was not part of the moral law but the ceremonial law for Israel. However, the Sabbath still has impact upon us in this sense: it has to do with a principle of balancing work and rest.

What’s so special about God’s name that He would put this as one of the Ten Commandments? God is a holy God and when we say His name, let’s be serious about it! Paul said that someday every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
