Week 1 of The Book of Mark at Together Church. Pastor Robbie Foreman opens Mark 1:1-45, the most urgent first chapter in any Gospel. Jesus wastes no time.

He preaches, calls disciples, casts out a demon, and touches a leper nobody else would go near.

Three movements: the kingdom arriving before we’re ready, Jesus calling ordinary people before they become impressive people, and Jesus going to the places everyone else avoided.

“Judge not.” It’s the most-quoted Bible verse by people who don’t read the Bible. It ends every hard conversation. It shuts down every accountability moment.

The problem is, Jesus didn’t stop at verse 1. In Matthew 7, he tells us to take the log out of our own eye, and then take the speck out of our brother’s. Then. Not never. Then.

This week we close out Myths We Believe with what Jesus actually said about judgment, hypocrisy, and what it looks like to love someone enough to tell them the truth.

Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is the uncomfortable thing. This message will challenge how you think about telling the truth.

“God helps those who help themselves.” It sounds like Scripture. It actually shows up in Poor Richard’s Almanack in 1736. Benjamin Franklin. Not the Bible.

The real Bible says almost the opposite. Romans 5: while we were still helpless, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Not after we proved ourselves. While we couldn’t.

This week in Myths We Believe we walk through why the most exhausting version of Christianity is the one built on a quote that isn’t in the Bible, and why the real gospel is specifically good news for people who have run out.
