The U.S. has escalated its attacks on Iran in kind, rather than in scale. Over the weekend, the U.S. hit a desalination plant in Iran while Iran responded by hitting two desalination plants in Kuwait and Bahrain, respectively. But even here Iran has the advantage on the escalation ladder and Trump still has no path to victory.

Summary:
Early in the Iran War, President Trump declared that he would accept nothing other than “unconditional surrender” from Iran. But in the Memorandum of Understanding Trump signed last Thursday, the U.S. agreed to every one of Iran’s demands to end the war, gaining only a reaffirmation of Iran’s promise not to develop or acquire a nuclear weapon. It amounts to the U.S. surrendering unconditionally to Iran.

Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz and the Trump administration’s claims that its government is in disarray and its economy on the verge of collapse are sounding very reminiscent of the claims the Biden administration made about Russia early in the Ukraine War. Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign minister was warmly greeted in Moscow by Putin himself and their meeting looked very much like a victory lap.
