Romans 13:8 is a favorite verse of those who teach Biblical financial principles. But as often as I've heard this verse referred to, I don't think I've ever heard anyone speak about our debt to love one another.
You see, this verse is not primarily about making timely payment on loans we've taken, or perhaps taking no loans at all. Rather, it's urging us not to fall behind in our obligation to love others.

Our Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace, wants us to experience peace with God. He also wants to give us inner, personal peace. But He also wants us to be at peace with others.
These are incredible blessings -- peace with God, with ourselves, and with others. I've found they tend to work together. When we first have peace with God, we can then have peace within ourselves, which makes it much easier to have peace with others. Isn't it wonderful to lie your head on your pillow at night knowing you have all three of these "peace blessings"?

The desire to pay back someone who's done you wrong can be intense. Some people have been hurt so badly that they are obsessed with revenge. It's human nature to want to even the score, to inflict pain on those who have afflicted us.
It's also contrary to the way Jesus lived and the way He calls His followers to live.
We march to a different drummer. We are in a different kingdom. We follow a different Spirit. We are called to love one another and thus fulfill the law of Christ.

One of the most radical ways life in God's kingdom differs from life in the domain of darkness is how we treat one another. Human societies develop a pecking order that establishes a hierarchy of status. It's human nature. It happens in every society.
Some cultural and political movements seek to do away with these hierarchies. Karl Marx, with his theories of communism, is most notable in this effort. But communism has never achieved its goals. In fact, it's always made things worse. Why? Because it rejects the Biblical teaching on human nature and seeks to achieve a utopia on earth without God. Such folly will never succeed.
