The Alchemist follows the journey of an Andalusian shepherd boy. Believing a recurring dream to be prophetic, he asks a Gypsy fortune teller in the nearby town about its meaning. The woman interprets the dream as a prophecy telling the boy that he will discover a treasure at the Egyptian pyramids.

Early into his journey, he meets an old king named Melchizedek, or the king of Salem, who tells him to sell his sheep, so as to travel to Egypt and accomplish his 'Personal Legend'.

Early in his arrival in Africa, a man who claims to be able to take Santiago to the pyramids instead robs him of the money he had made from selling his sheep. Santiago then embarks on a long path of working for a crystal merchant so as to earn enough to get to the pyramids.

Along the way, the boy meets an Englishman who has come in search of an alchemist and continues his travels with his new companion. When they reach an oasis, Santiago meets and falls in love with an Arabian girl named Fatima, to whom he proposes marriage. She promises to marry him only after he completes his journey. Frustrated at first, he later learns that true love will not stop nor must one sacrifice to it one's personal destiny, since to do so robs it of truth.

The boy then encounters a wise alchemist who also teaches him to realize his true self. Together, they risk a journey through the territory of warring tribes, where the boy is forced to demonstrate his oneness with "the soul of the world" by turning himself into a dust storm before he is allowed to proceed. When he begins digging within sight of the pyramids, he is robbed yet again, but accidentally learns from the leader of the thieves that the treasure he sought all along was in the ruined church where he had his original dream

Cool Air is a short story by the American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft , written in March 1926 and published in the March 1928 issue of Tales of Magic and Mystery. The story is set up as the narrator's explanation for why a "draught of cool air" is the most detestable thing to him. The tale opens up in the spring of 1923 with the narrator looking for housing in New York City, finally settling in a converted brownstone on West Fourteenth Street. Eventually, a chemical leak from the floor above reveals that the inhabitant directly overhead is a strange, old, reclusive doctor. One day the narrator suffers a heart attack, and remembering that a doctor lives directly above, heads there, culminating in his first meeting with Dr. Muñoz. The doctor shows supreme medical skill and saves the narrator with a concoction of drugs, resulting in the fascinated narrator returning regularly to sit and learn from the doctor, his new friend. As their talks continue, it becomes increasingly evident that the doctor has an obsession with defying death through all available means. The doctor's room is kept cold at approximately 56 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius) using an ammonia-based refrigeration system, the pumps driven by a gasoline engine. As time goes on, the doctor's health declines and his behavior becomes increasingly eccentric. The cooling system is continuously upgraded, to the point where some areas are at sub-freezing temperatures--until one night when the pump breaks down. Without explanation, the panic-stricken doctor frantically implores his friend to help him keep his body cool. Unable to repair the machine until morning and without a replacement piston, they resort to having the doctor stay in a tub full of ice. The narrator spends his time replenishing the ice, but soon is forced to employ someone else to do it. When he finally manages to locate competent mechanics and the replacement part however, it is too late. He arrives at the apartment only to see the rapidly-decomposed remains of the doctor, and a rushed, hideously smeared letter. We’ve started this series before, and honestly it wasn’t my best work. I want to do Dante justice, which is why we’re restarting it now in honor of the 100 Days of Dante Project, which officially begins Sept 8th. The concept is to read three cantos a week, ending on Easter 2022. You can find them on Twitter at 100daysofdante or visit their website of the same name to sign up and be part of the challenge. We will be reading the cantos at a much quicker pace here, over the next 100 days, to give you something to listen to every night before bed which you can then reflect on if you want to read and explore the cantos on your own during the challenge.

There are a number of prestigious colleges and universities involved and there will be experienced readers, churches, and book clubs to add value to the reading group. This is not sponsored, and I reached out independently to 100daysofdante because the story is so valuable to me.

As a young man, Dante tried to woo a beautiful and devout Florentine girl of his own age. Since childhood they had exchanged in passing the one word their families would allow—Salute! (Health!). Then one day, the young woman, Beatrice, in reaction to rumors of the poet’s increasingly worldly ways, refrained from the greeting, causing anguish in the young Dante. Shortly thereafter, Beatrice died. Dante was transformed by his grief and vowed to write in Beatrice’s honor a poem unlike any ever written. Thus began Dante’s famed journey, one that would take him through the depths of despair. Dante was well versed in poetry, but what he wanted to create for Beatrice called for something new and even more demanding, a flexible and muscular form he invented precisely for the new undertaking, the terza rima. Dante wrote his masterpiece on the move, banned from Florence by political enemies. In exile, he paid homage to his true love, Beatrice, and by choosing to write in his Tuscan vernacular instead of Latin, transformed the Italian language.
