Toni Unleashed

We talked a little bit about CBD in the last episode, and how beneficial it is to help bring the body to homeostasis, to support the immune system, inflammation, etc. In today's episode, we take all this information and dive deeper into this topic. We are lucky enough to have Angela Ardolino as a guest. Angela Ardolino is a holistic pet expert and educator caring for animals for over 20 years. Angela owns and operates Fire Flake Farm, an animal rescue farm, and two locations of her natural pet salon and shop, Beautify the Beast. She's also the founder and formulator of CBDDog Health, which offers high quality, all-natural cannabis health and wellness products for pets; Your Natural Dog, an online marketplace for natural pet products hand-picked by trusted holistic vets & pet experts; andMycoDog, which creates and produced high-quality medicinal mushroom and adaptogen tinctures explicitly designed for pets. In the past six months, we have sold over 133 units of CBD Dog Health products!! That just shows we are here to talk to the best, about the best!

Angela talks about her story, with CBD and her Doberman Nina, who had cancer. Nina lived and surpassed the vets' expectations of her lifespan post-diagnosis. Angela talks bout her journey with Nina, which sets the tone for how tremendous CBD is as a product and the wealth of knowledge Angela has to share. After, Angela dives into the world of CBD, how it is not regulated, what sets their CBD apart and what makes a cbd product legit versus following a trend. We talk about the benefits of CBD and how it heals the body, and can also be used as preventative medicine and care.

Toni and Emily talk tips and tricks to help your dog handle fireworks on the fourth of July. Toni's dog Desoto gets very nervous and upset around storms and fireworks, so Toni talks a lot about her experience keeping Desoto (red heeler) safe and comfortable during those times. Emily on the other hand, has not experienced a dog that gets upset around fireworks or storms, however she does have some advice on ways to take extra precautions when traveling or with skittish dogs to keep them from running away.

• Toni talks about how her dog Desoto and how he behaves when he hears thunder, lightning, or fireworks. He has a safe place in Toni's closet that he knows to retreat to when he gets scared. Desoto also takes a lot of CBD to help keep him calm during those stressful times
• Toni and Emily list out a couple of recommendations including: CBD, Crate training, Thundershirts, Third of July, and more! They talk about how important it is especially when you are traveling to take extra precautions to keep your dog safe and calm. A lot of dogs get scared and run away during these times, and shelters are already at capacity! They hope this episode helps and as always want to hear from others about what works for them!

Toni and Emily talk with Lindsay again is all about cat enrichment. They continue to discuss cats with cat expert; Lindsay from a previous episode. If you don't remember from last week, Lindsay is the resident cat expert with tons of experience at home with her cat colony and from working at a veterinary clinic. The previous episode with Lindsay was focused on managing multiple cat diets, maximizing moisture content, and transiting a picky cat to a new food. This episode is going to focus on enrichment for cats. Cats are hunters and intelligent creatures often mistaken for being independent and sometimes lazy. However, they need just as much mental stimulation, if not more, than dogs. We will discuss tips and tricks to keep your cat active and happy!

• Emily talks about her cat, and how he tends to play with her cat. She asks Lindsay if this is the equivalent of enrichment for her cat, because they acknowledge that cat's are very intelligent creatures that need mental stimulation just as much as dogs do. Cat's are hunters and can benefit from looking for their food around the house, even if it is a kibble that is moved to a new location.
• Toni and Emily ask Lindsay all about what toys shes uses, and what toys she does not recommend to people. There are many toys that can be dangerous or lack appropriate interaction with cats. Lindsay also talks about how enrichment can shape appropriate behaviors and prevent cats from being destructive and from exhibiting unwanted behaviors.

Toni and Emily invite HPP assistant manager and certified cat lady: Lindsay onto the show to talk all things cats! Lindsay has 7 cats and knows the ins and outs of cat life. She has been through everything from picky eating to raw feeding and introducing a new cat. Toni and Emily talk in depth with Lindsay about how she recommends and handles transitioning cats and kittens to new food. Cats are very sensitive to textures, they even imprint on certain shapes, and textured foods. It can be very challenging to put a cat at any age on a new food!

• Toni, Emily, and Lindsay summarize the number of cats Lindsay has, how she acquired so many cats, and what has led her to being such a fan of cats! They enjoy small banter about their experience with cats and the quirky stories about adding to cats to the colony, and Emily's experience with her cat. They talk about how they started their cats on raw food, and rotating foods since they were kittens, and how it can be challenging to transition an older cat to a new food.
• Lindsay takes the time to talk with Toni and Emily about tips and tricks for transitioning your cat to a new food. They also expand on the importance and relevance of rotating your cat's proteins and textures. Just like dogs, cats need to be exposed to new proteins and textures to fill nutritional gaps, boost their immune system, and prevent the struggle of picky eating.

Toni and Emily are talking about the importance of enrichment for dogs. There are SO many ways to engage your dog in mental stimulation with items you have at home, to fun toys and puzzles you can buy at your local pet store. Providing mental stimulation for your pup can also help prevent unwanted behaviors. Mental work is always going to tire a dog out quicker and longer than physical activity. There are some incredibly intelligent dogs out there that need to be using their brain for their happiness and confidence and we will give you tips and tricks to easy ways to do this for them!

• Emily and Toni talk about the simple things that you can do at home to boost mental enrichment for your dogs. From throwing a handful of kibble in your backyard so they have to sniff in the grass for their dinner, to using old kitchen towels for a puzzle and muffin tins. There are also fun games that you can do like hide and seek, and "find it" to grow that relationship and bond with your dog while you're asking them to think

• There are so many toys, puzzles, and activities that you can buy to support your dogs cognitive development! Puzzles are frequently used and available at any independent pet store, but they are something that requires supervision. Usually the first two times using a puzzle a dog is going to need some assistance and guidance. This is not only great for your dogs mental health, but a great bonding exercise as well. There are other tools from west paw, kong and licki mat that you can leave with your dog and walk away from. Enrichment is a fun way to be creative and bond with your pup!

Toni and Emily are talking with Bethann, who runs, and manages Orphans of the Storm. Orphans is a no kill animal shelter in Kittaning, PA. The builidng is located in a flood zone, that has caused devastation to their building, and animals in years past. They have acquired land above the flood zone and are raising over 4 million dollars to build out the safe and new facility of their dream. Toni and Emily have been volunteering, and organzing adoption events with Orphans since last Thanksgiving when they were asked to help with Kongsgiving. Since then, Toni has been accepted on the board, and they have maintained a close relationship with Bethann and her Husband, Brian.

• Bethann talks about the history of Orphans of the Storm, and how her mother started the organization because she saw so many stray animals get killed, or discarded in Kittanning. Since then, the rescue has stayed in the family, and has been a beacon of hope, sanctuary, and resilience for the community. Not only does Orphans take in local animals, but from other rescues and shelters in need. At any point in time, they house over 100 animals in their small facility.
• Orphans of the Storm is always accepting donations. They have three major funds: Their day to day expenses, including vetting, spay, and neutering, their new building fund, and a medical fund for dogs with severe medical needs and attention. They accept donations through their website, and you can also donate at any Healthy Pet Producst location. We are excited to be working together towards a goal of saving lives, and strengthening a community.

Toni and Emily are talking with Heather from Petagogy! There are two Petagogy locations, one in Shadyside and the other in Greensburg. Heather shares her story about how Petagogy started, the family it has created, and their continued journey to serving pets healthy food in Pittsburgh, PA.

• Toni and Emily talk to Heather about the pet industry and how it has developed over the years. She talks about some of the changes over the years, what excites her, and what she looks forward to seeing and changing in this industry. It is a heavily male-dominated field, therefore, having strong women who are successful in the independent pet retail space is important to celebrate and focus on! Furthermore, the increased acceptance of raw and fresh food for pets in this industry has grown instrumentally, and the women talk about how they are excited about that and the vast options out there for dog and cat owners.
• Secondly, Toni and Emily talk to Heather about different customer experiences they have had and shared. They talk about how they approach talking to customers about adding fresh food and ingredients to their dogs bowls, even if that just means some fruits and veggies that are already in the home. They talk about the importance in gaining customer trust, when it comes to talking about health and wellness and not having a veterinary degree. There is so much to anecdotal evidence, and trial and error for digestion, skin, coat, hip, and joint, etc.
• Finally, Toni, Emily, and Heather talk about their favorite products, supplements, and foods that they sell and recommend to customers. They have a fun time sharing stories about how they use their favorite products for their pets and how customers have reported back with success. Overall this episode is lighthearted and fun to listen to.
