  • 28 - Interview With Maizie: Curing Paralysis

Toni and Emily are going to talk to an incredible customer. Her name is Katherine and she is the dog owner of Maizie Gracie. Mazie became paralyzed in her back legs after showing some symptoms of lethargy, loss of appetite, etc. Katherine shares her journey with Maizie from day one, to today, where Maizie is happy, healthy, and running on all four paws again.

    • Toni and Emily ask Katherine about where Maizie came from, her breed and history as well as their history as pet owners. Katherine explains that Maizie was their first dog, and was being rehomed because she had too much energy. Katherine and her family are very active and were very excited about the new addition.
    • Secondly, Toni and Emily talk to Katherine about how she learned about raw/clean feeding for animals. Katherine talks about how she is a dog walker and noticed a lot of issues, and felt like there was a better option. Soon after adopting Maizie Katherine and her family walked into Healthy Pet Products to ask for advice and the rest is history.
    • Finally Toni, Emily and Katherine talk about how Maizie got connected with a holistic vet, and the different options they were given at the time of her paralysis. Most families are offered a surgery of high risk with a slim chance of function, or to take a more holistic route with chiropractic, acupuncture, muscle testing, supplements, and diet changes. Not many people can afford to try both, and luckily for Maizie's family the practice in Cranberry was open and accepting new clients, so that is where their story to recovery started.

  • 27 - Raw w/ Dr.Wynn | Instinct

Toni and Emily cover raw food for animals with a board certified veterinary nutritionist. Susan G. Wynn, DVM, DACVIM (Nutrition) is a 1987 graduate of the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed her residency at University of Tennessee and became board-certified in Nutrition in 2016. Dr. Wynn was in clinical practice for 31 years, most recently with BluePearl Veterinary Partners as their nutrition specialist. She is currently the Senior Director of Scientific Affairs with Instinct Pet Food in St.Louis, Missouri. We also have Stephanie Striar here with us as well! She is a CVT (certified veterinary technician) who is in her final year of a master's in animal nutrition program.

    • The first raw food company that Toni and Emily will talk about is Answers. They use fermentation as a way to kill off bacteria. By utilizing kombucha (fermented organic decaffeinated green tea), raw cultured whey, cultured raw goat's milk, and kefir, we created our own category and became the first and only fermented raw pet food supplier in the industry. Fermentation supports healthy immune function by increasing the B vitamins, digestive enzymes, antioxidants, and lactic acid that fight off harmful bacteria. It's also the ultimate source of probiotics.
    • Secondly, Toni and Emily talk about the process of HPP (High Pressure Processing) and the different companies that use this process as a way of killing off harmful bacteria and keeping their meat safe for animal consumption. HPP is a non-thermal food preservation technique that kills microorganisms that can cause diseases or spoil food. It uses intense pressure for a certain time and has minimal effects on taste, texture, appearance, or nutritional values.
    • Finally Toni and Emily talk about how they handle their foods and which companies they use and like. Not all food companies process their meat either and Emily and Toni talk about how they have used those options as well with their dogs. They talk about how Toni's dog Meg transitioned well over to a raw meat diet without issue whatsoever. Emily and Toni both like to rotate through different raw diets, and keep their dogs on a rotational diet. They talk about the importance of variety in pets diets and the benefits it has on their individual pets.

Toni and Emily are going to talk more about raw food on this episode. This is a topic that will require a lot of episodes to fully cover the in's and outs of raw feeding for dogs and cats. We are going to talk about the different ways raw foods are processed, and Toni and Emily also want to take this time to talk about bacteria, and people's fear of it when it comes to raw food.

  • 25 - Raw 101

Toni and Emily talk dive into the topic of raw feeding for dogs. This is a category of feeding that is both controversial and growing in the pet industry. Toni and Emily are both big advocates for raw feeding, and are excited to start the conversation with their listeners about it. They take it slow with the conversation just covering the basics; what raw is, addressing bacteria, and the different ways it is processed and fed.

    • So, raw food is: giving your dog completely raw foods like fruits, vegetables, meat, organs, and bones. There are a lot of raw commercial dog food brands out there now, and almost all pet stores have some sort of raw or fresh food option these days. The great thing about Raw feeding is that it can be used complementarity with kibble or canned food, or can be fed on its own.
    • Secondly, Toni and Emily talk about the big thing about and behind raw food is the bioavailability aspect. Because the food is less processed the body is able to absorb more of the nutrients quicker and more efficiently, therefore you typically will feed your animal WAY less of the food compared to what you are used to seeing with Kibble. This means that your dog will be far more hydrated, and have much smaller BM's because there is less that the body needs to eliminate and less urination because the body is using all the hydration internally and efficiently.
    • Finally Toni and Emily talk about how they feed their dogs raw food. They both have a more relaxed system of cleaning and food handling when it comes to raw food compared to what most people are told to do. They rotate between various brands, and both love to try new foods out there. When it comes to thawing their food, Toni and Emily have a similar approach, where they let it thaw overnight or in the refrigerator and then feed directly to their dogs. All of their animals on raw food are thriving, and have never been sick from raw food, they have beautiful coats, a solid digestive tract and incredible muscle tone.

  • 24 - Cats 101 With Weruva

Toni and Emily talk about cats with Weruva, an incredible wet dog and cat food company. There is a lot of important information regarding cats that people are surprised to learn about. For example, they don't have a thirst drive because they are desert animals, so they will not always drink enough water. They have evolved to thrive off of intracellular moisture, which means that most of their necessary moisture content is absorbed through their food and that they imprint on texture, so switching cats' diets is often very challenging! Here to talk about all of this is Chris from Weruva!

    • Emily and Toni get to know Chris, he has a background in music, and the military. He has been with Weruva for 11 years now. They talk about all the animals he has, and how he ended up in this industry. Chris talks about how the name Weruva started and how it is merging the names of the Owners pet cats that they started this company for.

    • Secondly, Toni and Emily talk about how important it is for cats to have a high quality protein and moisture content in their diet. They talk about how when you open a can of food, you want to actually be able to see the meat, and have it be the right color, the right smell, and the right texture, and with Weruva you get just that. You can see all the moisture, the ingredients and the meat content, they care about the nutritional results.

    • Finally Toni and Emily ask Chris about why cats need these amino acids from proteins, and then follow up with a question about how and why they say: Made in Thailand. They talk about the importance, and benefits of european standards and how where they package their food meets all their standards and expectations as a food company.

  • 23 - How to Read a Label

On this episode of Toni Unleashed the podcast Toni and Emily are talking about something fairly controversial. That is starting to understand how to read your dog's food label, what to look out for, and a deeper dive into some scarier ingredients that are actually allowed in your dog's food.

    • Emily and Toni talk about what should be your first couple of ingredients, meat should always be listed as the first ingredient, in fact the first three ingredients should be meat unless it is a single sourced protein diet. This excludes the words: Animal protein, protein, meat. You want the meat content to be strictly identified as an animal source.
    • Secondly, Toni and Emily talk about ingredients that they recommend avoiding that are really common in commercial diets: Contain wheat, corn, soy, chemical preservatives and food coloring, animal digest, and what meat meal really is.
    • Finally Toni and Emily talk about all the chemicals that are commonly found in commercial dog food outside of just the ingredient panel. BHT, BHA, Ethoxyquin. Toni talks about how common these chemicals used to be in dog foods, and how they are linked to cancer in people and animals. She mentioned you see them less and less but they are still in some mass produced foods.

  • 22 - Gut Health with Rebecca Rose | Inclover

Toni and Emily bring back Rebecca Rose to talk about Prebiotics, Digestive Enzymes and gut health. Rebecca is the founder and owner of Incolver:InClover was born from the human-based biochemistry research of our president and founder, Rebecca Rose. Rebecca's background is in women's healthcare, where she was part of a team funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) to research the secrets of a healthy immune system. Their mission was simple: explore how healthy bodies function and find out how supplements can help all bodies achieve optimal health. Rebecca, who has a self-proclaimed obsession with her own pets, did not hesitate to bring the same world-class scientific practices to the pet industry. So, InClover Research, the first scientifically-developed pet supplement company was created and has been committed to bringing optimal health to your pets ever since. So today they are all going to talk about the science behind gut health, and how to supplement a dog in need of gut support.

    • Topic #1: First Emily and Toni ask Rebecca why she does not have any probiotics in her supplement. Rebecca talks about the science behind probiotics, how they can be helpful but why she chooses to not add any probiotics to her gut health supplement.
    • Then Toni and Emily inquire about the clinical studies and science behind Optagest. How Rebecca is able to gather such exact and helpful information that keeps customers returning for more to help ease the upset stomach and digestion related issues.
    • Finally Toni and Emily talk about how to use Optagest, why it is important to eat with food, and how to properly give it to your dogs, or cats. Digestion starts with the mouth, and breaking down food and nutrients with saliva. So you will hear Rebecca talk about how Optagest works with the body, and supports it naturally with plant based digestive enzymes.

  • 21 - Gut Health 101

Today we will dive into the topic of Gut health for your dogs. 70% of the immune system is housed in the gut, so we need to support the gut for healthy and sick dogs. We can only partially cover this topic in one episode, not even two. We could have an episode just on probiotics, even prebiotics and their benefits. That is We will have Rebecca Rose from In clover back on our show to discuss gut health more with us next week. In the next episode we will dive more into the science behind adding prebiotics and digestive enzymes. So many ailments and issues we see in dogs today can be linked to the gut. Some things we are going to cover in this episode are: Diet change, Ways to repair the gut, and identifying the problem.

    • First Emily and Toni talk about identifying the problem and whether or not your dog has GI symptoms before or after eating. This is relatively easy to identify. Do they have gas or throw up on an empty stomach? Then we might want to add some soothing supplements or food to your dog's diet to soothe the gut lining. Toni and Emily expand on what to look for and how to approach the problem your pet might be experiencing.
    • Then Toni and Emily begin to talk about the difference between pro and prebiotics and why they might help your dog with these issues!! There are different supplements to add and ways to repair the gut through supplements and diet.Probiotics are live microorganisms that exist in your stomach. They are the good bacterias that help keep the harmful bacteria from causing harm to your dog's system.
    • Finally Toni and Emily talk about diet change and how feeding your dog can help or hurt the gut. Any food options that are higher in bioavailability, aka less processed will be easier for the body to absorb and put less stress on these organs that we have talked about to digest and break down.

  • 20 - Air Dried Food with Heather Hickey | ZiwiPeak

In this episode we have a resident expert and VP of sales: Heather Hickey, here to speak about air-dried food options for dogs and cats and why it is an excellent option for your pets! If you have been following the podcast closely, you have already listened to Emily and Toni's take on air-dried food and how we recommend it to our customers. They will dive deeper into this subject matter and learn more about the benefits of a non-heat-processed diet.

    • Heather talks about what air drying is. The machines they have at their facility and how it slowly and carefully takes a complete and balanced diet, and uses their drying racks in an advanced facility to create a shelf stable product, without over processing the nutrients.
    • Heather then talks about their attention to detail when it comes to sourcing. Because ZiwiPeak is located in New Zealand they have the ability to source their meats from the best farmers in the world. All three women then talk about the importance of protein, and ingredient sourcing. What goes into the food really is what makes it high quality.
    • Finally Toni and Emily ask Heather about their recent acquisition of a Chinese Investment company. Heather divulges into how involved the company is with ZiwiPeak, why they invested and some of the changes they have seen.

  • 19 - Air Dried Kibble

There are different categories of feeding these days. Today we will talk about air dried food. It is definitely a niche category of feeding. We want to shed some light on it today with you. This episode won't be super long, but we will have a GREAT follow up interview with the leading air dried food in the industry.

    • Emily and Toni like air dried food so much because of its palatability. Almost all of our pickiest eaters will enjoy air dried food. It is so palatable because of the process, it goes into a drying chamber that circulates air and as such, retains more nutritional value, moisture and texture compared to other kibble processes. These foods also typically are limited ingredients and contain higher meat value.
    • Toni's favorite thing from a retail perspective about air dried, is that 1. It doesn't need to be refrigerated, so it doesn't take up space away from raw food, supplements or bones 2. It is shelf stable with a high digestibility rate, and nutritional value. We will ALWAYS recommend feeding this food with added hydration, and that can be with: Bone broth, goats milk, water, etc. This will increase the palatability even further, ensuring your dog is hydrated.
    • Finally Toni and Emily talk about taking a deeper dive into this category of air dried food in a future episode. They will have Ziwi Peak on as a guest in the next episode talking about the air drying process and their sourcing.
