  • Gold Mine Boundary
    Originally Aired: September 26, 1938
In The Lone Ranger #884, "Gold Mine Boundary," a bitter dispute over mining claims leads to deception and danger in the gold country near Oak Falls. Bull and Jake, two dishonest prospectors, secretly tunnel from their worthless claim into the mine of Steve Gardner, where they discover a rich vein of gold ore on his property. When they attempt to buy Steve's claim at a low price, he angrily refuses, remembering how they previously cheated him on a fraudulent sale. Steve is caring for his ailing father and desperately needs money, but his stubborn pride and justified distrust won't allow him to do business with the two swindlers again.
Rebuffed in their attempt at a buyout, Bull hints at a sinister alternative plan involving Big Stone Canyon. Two weeks later, Bull intercepts Tonto on a mountain trail with a suspicious story about a lame horse and a lucrative gold discovery. He offers Tonto over a hundred dollars in gold to deliver a message to Steve Gardner, claiming Steve won't listen to him directly because of past bad blood between them. The setup suggests a dangerous trap is being laid for the unsuspecting prospector.

In the mining town of Burnside at the foot of Eagle Pass, tension erupts when the bitter Dan Latham confronts his niece Mary Frisbee on the street. Dan resents his former partner and brother-in-law Paul Frisbee, Mary's father, believing Paul swindled him out of his share of their mining claim years ago. Despite Paul's generosity over the years, giving Dan thousands of dollars out of sympathy, the angry drunk refuses to be grateful and threatens that he's finally going to "get square." When Dan roughly grabs Mary's arm, a helpful Indian named Tonto intervenes, earning Dan's hatred along with a vow of revenge against them all.
Mary returns home troubled by her uncle's behavior, sensing something more dangerous than his usual drunken complaints. Her concern deepens when Tonto arrives with alarming news: he overheard Dan talking with another man while refusing a drink and staying sober for once, saying he has "plenty big plans." Paul assigns his ranch hand Jim Brandt to escort Mary through Eagle Pass for her planned visit to her aunt, but the household remains uneasy about what Dan might be plotting.

Panicking over the prospect of having to account for all the gold they've taken, Stan hatches a plan to intercept the children at the stage depot. He meets young Tom, Sally, and little Betty with a convincing tale of woe—claiming their Uncle Barnaby is sick, the mine has caved in, and all the money is gone. Stan scrapes together just enough cash to send them back east on the next stage, playing on their sympathies and fears of becoming a burden.
However, Tonto encounters the children at the depot and grows suspicious of Stan's story. After speaking with the youngsters and witnessing Stan's hostile reaction, the faithful Indian companion rides to tell the Lone Ranger what he's discovered. As Stan races back to warn Barnaby that the children are now heading to the house instead of leaving town, the stage is set for the masked rider to intervene in this scheme to cheat innocent orphans out of their rightful inheritance.
