Tony n' Tina's Wedding: Creating a Theatre Tribe episodes

  • Judy & Carolyn Cater with Character

In this episode, our hosts chat with two original members of the Black Staff Catering Team, Judy Sheehan, who created the role of Nikki Black, and Carolyn Scott, who created the role of Theresa Marie Black.

In Part 1, Judy shares memories from the earliest Tony n’ Tina workshops in SoHo, including performing as the singing “gorilla gram,” playing Grandma, and later originating Nikki Block’s Walkman-wearing, punk-leaning attitude. She recalls how the show evolved over its first year, the demands of interactive performance, and stepping in last-minute to play Donna and sing with the band. Judy discusses the catering family dynamic, pre-show calm before the audience arrived, and how the company built community through elaborate celebrations and creative events.

In Part 2, Carolyn reminisces about early days of working with Joanna and performing at Carmelita’s. They discuss how the show moved through cities, including a Canadian production that closed after three consecutive snowstorms, and a move to Los Angeles, and Carolyn’s subsequent 30-year career in Canada. They share behind-the-scenes stories like a catering-table mishap that dropped a pan of ziti and became a critic’s favorite “bit,” Carolyn’s cast caricatures, and how improvisation, intimacy, understudies, and the “black staff” shaped the show’s unique sense of family and lasting friendships.

  • Vinnie Was Not a Pervert

Guest Vinnie Floriani joins the podcast to recall how he joined the original company, first reconnecting with Nancy Cassaro years after a 1970s middle-school play. He describes creating Sal, the obnoxious wedding photographer at Carmelita’s, and later stepping in as Father Mark, including the challenges of pacing, improv, and staying in character. Vinnie reflects on the show’s realism, subtle peripheral performance, and memorable bits, and discusses going to LA, deferring and abandoning law school, and shifting from acting to music. He shares later work as an elementary teacher, winning a Parents’ Choice Award for children’s music, adopting two children from Colombia, rebuilding after Helene, teaching GED in a city jail, and thoughts on how cell phones and social media changed the audience experience.

  • Teresa Controls the Chaos

Original Stage Manager of Tony n' Tina's Wedding, Teresa Hagar, joins the podcast to reflect on the early downtown days at Gus’s, including working from a timeline with virtually no cue sheet, handling everything from lights and props to security, transport, and even calling the police when an intoxicated armed audience member caused problems. She and Christy compare how the show ran across different venues and eras, from boombox church cues and live-band timing to later tech changes, and share stories about cast teamwork, difficult audience moments, and the practical realities of running nine shows a week. Teresa also discusses her current work as production coordinator at Paper Mill Playhouse, how theater audiences and subscriptions changed after the pandemic, and how Tony n’ Tina’s created lasting friendships across generations of companies.

  • Hal and Juan Choreograph & Costume the Company

In this episode, hosts Larry, Gret and Concetta reunite with choreographer Hal Simons and costume designer Juan de Armas to reminisce about the early days and evolution of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding. They discuss how iconic dance moments were built and changed over time (from “Love Is a Battlefield” and “Bad” to “Cold Hearted Snake” and later “Bye Bye Bye”), how choreography ensured safety in immersive, audience-close staging, and how city rules affected elements like sparklers. Juan shares resourceful zero-budget costume solutions, including sourcing original bridesmaid dresses and donated tuxedos, plus the challenges of maintaining Tina’s gown and avoiding buttercream cake. They emphasize Nancy’s insistence on realism—no dance shoes, detailed character-specific looks—and the collaborative process that made the show believable and lasting.

  • Kia and Michael Develop Fusion

Hosts Larry and Gret interview original Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding cast members Michael Winther (Donny Dolce) and Kia Colton (Celeste Romano), recalling the early Carmelita’s days, tiny performance space, and how the band Donny Dolce & Fusion helped shape the show’s energy, cues, and structure. They discuss the evolving set list, licensing issues that led Kia to write original songs like “Heaven Made Love” with Murray Weinstein, and variations across New York, Philadelphia, and LA productions while keeping key “bones” of the music intact. They emphasize playing the wedding band sincerely rather than parody, the importance of strong singing and stamina in casting, costumes and character work, and how the show’s collaborative, pre-internet live experience created lasting impact and connections.

Hosts Larry, Gret, and Concetta welcome Eli Ganias (original Johnny) and Denise Moses (Grandma Nunzio) from the early New York City run of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, recalling the show’s beginnings at Carmelita’s and how characters and bits were built through improvisation, timelines, and audience interaction. They discuss Johnny’s development, family dynamics with Mr. Nunzio, Grandma’s physical and makeup challenges, and famous moments like the “snowball,” the dollar dance, and Grandma slipping on “fat” during “Celebrate.” The conversation shifts to the Los Angeles run, including fire-code interruptions, security issues, and the neighborhood’s chaos, plus celebrity attendees. They reflect on enduring friendships, souvenirs and cast traditions, benefit performances, and how the show’s long, organic development helped pioneer interactive theater and shaped later work.

  • Randall Builds a Cake, David Builds a Story

In this two-part episode, hosts Larry, Gret and Concetta speak to two people who were instrumental in securing the longevity of Tony n' Tina's Wedding, Randall Thropp and David Rothenberg. In part one, Randall recounts how his involvement with Tony & Tina’s Wedding began by creating an elaborate fake wedding cake prop, then expanded into designing and dressing the original New York reception space above Gus’ Place, inspired by over-the-top Italian restaurants like Mama Leone’s and built on a tight budget with Canal Street finds,. He describes audience immersion, theft of set pieces prompting the creation of his onstage role as Vlasik to monitor the room, and his stint as the photographer, making him the only person with interior photos from the original church and Vinnie Black’s Colosseum. In part two, David speaks about discovering the early Vicky shows and becoming the press agent for Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, which he says “rewrote the book” for off-Broadway by reaching audiences beyond traditional theatergoers. David recounts key PR moments—especially placing a New York Times food-section feature about a show that feeds the audience—plus celebrity and athlete stunt casting, wide TV coverage, and the challenges of keeping the show authentic while it expanded to cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Kansas City, and even Bermuda. He reflects on his broader career, including producing Fortune in Men’s Eyes, which led to founding a nonprofit supporting formerly incarcerated people and creating plays with Fortune Society residents. Now 92, David is preparing to do standup and has published two books.Tony n' Tina's Wedding: Creating a Theatre Tribe is a twice-a-month podcast that follows original NY director and later collaborators of the sensational Off-Broadway hit, Tony n' Tina's Wedding, that features interviews and memories of the show that created friends that became family world-wide. • Tom Brings a Twist of Gay

Hosts Larry, Gret and Concetta are joined by Tom Allen, who recounts how he got cast in Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding 41 years ago, navigating early rehearsals built on improvised tableaus before characters were fully formed. Tom describes his struggle to fit into the loud New York-Italian world, choosing to play Joey as a closeted gay man for the period rather than a stereotype, shaping the role through conversations about shame, and collaborating with his onstage mother to keep Joey’s secret alive. He shares key character breakthroughs like wearing red spike heels without comment, bringing in Neil Monaco's Rick DeMarco as Joey’s boyfriend, and quietly dancing together in the LA run. The conversation also covers cast camaraderie, venue differences, audience dynamics, pranks with Cousin Terry, memorabilia, a cross-country caravan to LA, a pivotal New York Times rave for The Vicky Shows, and celebrity attendees like Tracey Ullman and Catherine O’Hara.

Hosts Larry, Gret and Concetta welcome Kevin Alexander, an original member of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, who performed in early versions at the American Legion/VFW Halls, describing the show’s largely improvised structure, early rehearsals with little audience, and the need to recruit friends as unpaid catering “Black staff.” Kevin explains how he built Vinny Black from restaurant experience and influences like Andy Kaufman, Jerry Lewis, and Pat Cooper, and recalls bits such as the Cadillac of Caterers, breath-mint sprays, smoked salmon with a cigarette, and recycling leftover champagne. Carolyn Scott also joins to share memories of Kevin’s outrageous Vinny persona, backstage physical comedy at Gus’s Place, and how improvised moments became part of the show.Tony n' Tina's Wedding: Creating a Theatre Tribe is a twice-a-month podcast that follows original NY director and later collaborators of the sensational Off-Broadway hit, Tony n' Tina's Wedding, that features interviews and memories of the show that created friends that became family world-wide. • Elizabeth and James Dance Through Drama

Hosts Larry, Gret and Concetta chat with Elizabeth Dennehy and James Altuner, who created Donna Marsala and Dominic Fabrizzi in Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, to revisit how the show grew out of overlapping “theater tribes” from Hofstra, Lambda, and David Kaplan’s acting class and early performances at the American Legion Hall before Carmelita’s. They share how characters, songs, and improvised bits evolved through tableaus and vignettes, including Donna’s musical dreams, Dominic’s influence from Sonny Corleone and the Nutty Professor, and recurring Dirty Dancing-inspired dances. They discuss audience interaction, crowd control, safety challenges, and why certain endings and ideas were dropped. The conversation includes memories of New York’s 1980s scene, meeting celebrities, touring, shifting from live bands to tracks, and how iconic choices carried into later productions.
