- October 2023: “Leviathan” by Scott Westerfeld | FBOM Ep. 51
This month for our conversation on airships, we read Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. Here is a brief description of the book:
It is the cusp of World War I. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship, and the most masterful beast in the British fleet. Aleksandar Ferdinand, a Clanker, and Deryn Sharp, a Darwinist, are on opposite sides of the war. But their paths cross in the most unexpected way, taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure….One that will change both their lives forever. Please consider supporting us below:

45 min - Found Footage Horror
Nico and Adam sift through a pile of unmarked tapes to uncover the origins of the found footage genre. After a surprise SIXTH nominee is added to the list (11:13), the guys discuss: The Blair Witch Project, the film that popularized the genre and terrified audiences in a way few films ever have (26:01); Paranormal Activity, the first installment of the mega-franchise that helped solidify Blumhouse as the studio for 21st century horror (36:03); [REC], the hyper-real Spanish zombie movie with a final 10 minutes that won’t leave your brain (45:32); Cloverfield, the post-9/11, American riff on Godzilla that proved, if anything, that J.J. Abrams is damn good marketer (59:06); and Creep; the mumblegore two-hander starring Mark Duplass and director Patrick Brice (1:09:29).

1 hr 30 min - The Hamiltons (2006)
The Spooktacular rolls on with the mid-aughts horror indie The Hamiltons, about a family of [SPOILER]s with domestic issues that go well beyond their predilection for murder. Is it fair of us to mock this micro-budgeted San Francisco production? Well, considering the filmmakers have dubbed themselves “The Butcher Brothers,” we think it’s all fair game.

1 hr 34 min - House of the Dead (2003)
Nick, Nico and Adam kick off the October Spooktacular with the early-aughts, zombie video game adaption that’s NOT Resident Evil. Is House of the Dead Sega’s legitimate attempt at a horror movie or a money-laundering scheme by controversial German auteur Uwe Boll? We answer all your nagging questions, as we review one of worst movies in WiTaT history.

1 hr 23 min - Open Your Eyes (1997) vs Vanilla Sky (2001)
Redux August concludes with a side-by-side comparison of the Spanish-language sci-fi film Abre los ojos and Cameron Crowe’s faithfully idiosyncratic remake Vanilla Sky. Does the original help justify the remake’s clunky plot? Is the remake grade-A Tom Cruise or a thinly disguised vanity project? Will Nico be forced to eat crow or will he defend the film as a classic guilty pleasure? Tech support is here to resolve all your burning questions.

1 hr 30 min - Class of Paul W.S. Anderson
Nico and Adam complete their two-part exploration of trashy sci-fi auteurs by watching six basic cable classics directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The films discussed: Shopping, Anderson’s indie debut that showcases his punk sensibilities and the acting prowess of newcomer Jude Law (8:51); Mortal Kombat, Anderson’s colorfully plotless adaptation of the arcade game of the same name (20:25); Event Horizon, a gnarly space horror flick, starring Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill, that was predestined for cult status (34:24); Soldier, a criminally underrated Kurt Russell vehicle that doubles as a secret Blade Runner spin-off (46:58); Resident Evil, the first installment of Anderson’s signature franchise, starring his future wife Mila Jovovich (1:04:21); and Death Race, an update of Roger Corman’s 70s camp classic, starring Jason Statham and a loaded cast of character actors (1:23:02).
