Ever thought to yourself, "I don't need feminism"? Or maybe, "Feminism is degrading to men"? What about, "Well, I respect feminists, but I don't personally identify as feminist. I just love the men in my life too much!" All of these statements are based on some misconceptions about the term that we want to clear up right now.
No, we're not living in the 50's anymore, and you might feel like you've never been forced to deal with gender roles. Buuuuuut we beg to differ -- yes, we've come a long way, but there are still some important things to be aware of. We've all heard the term 'cancel culture.' For some, it represents marginalized people taking power back -- and that's a good thing! For others, it feels overdone and cringey, a sort of unhealthy 'mob mentality.' Let's talk about what it means, and how you can respond with respect and wisdom if YOU are ever 'canceled' -- whether that's in a dogpile on Twitter or in a personal conversation with someone you've wronged.
As women living in very near proximity to the protests in Portland, Oregon, we have a few thoughts on it -- and the concern you might have about riots.
Has anyone ever told you you were 'too much'? Yeah, it doesn't feel good. But we're here to embrace being 'too much' ;) -- so let's break it down and define what we actually mean.
References:
- We reference this quote: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world." Often attributed to Nelson Mandela, it's actually from Marianne Williamson.
- We also reference this quote by Elie Wiesel: "And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." From his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in 1986.
