Colorism has been a term used in the black and brown communities as a form of discrimination between lighter/ darker skin tones. Colorism was introduced into the black community from as far back as slavery. The slave owners discriminated against darker slaves, who were forced to work outside and do hard labor vs the lighter slaves who were chosen to work in the homes. Unfortunately, we still see colorism affecting our black, brown, Hispanic, and other minority groups. Our two special guests, Mya Matos and Prishna Jimenez-Cassan, share their experiences with colorism. The year 2020 was a huge eye opener for the Black Community. We were experiencing a pandemic as well as witnessing more of our Black men being killed by the hands of police officers. Our experience as black mothers raising young black men is one we needed to share with our listeners. From being a single mother of black boys to being a mother within a blended family raising five young black men; listen to our experiences raising young black men in today’s society.
