  • Top Coach 148: Brian Harrison, Baldwin-Wallace
Another coach who grew up in the shadow of the campus where he would eventually coach. What makes it better is that he married his childhood sweetheart. Yes, life is good for the head coach at Baldwin-Wallace University, Brian Harrison.
Taking over for 43 year veteran, Bob Fisher, Coach Harrison is now headed into year number six with the Yellow Jackets. Asked why he thought this was a good fit, he explained that all he was looking for was a school with "competitive resources", and in Baldwin-Wallace, he has apparently found that in truckloads.
In this episode, Coach Harrison talks about what he looks for in an assistant coach, his duties as compliance coordinator, and recruiting.

  • Top Coach 147: Brian McGee, Lake Erie College
Here's a guy who knew early on that he wanted to coach, so at one point while playing college baseball, Brian McGee stopped playing summer ball and started coaching. Coach McGee got his degree in Sports Administration, but knew the only sport he wanted to administer was baseball. After school he beat the bushes to find a place to land. After moving around a bit, today he's on the shores of Lake Erie in northern Ohio at NCAA D2 Lake Erie College.
Coach McGee explains why he has the dual title of head coach and recruiting coordinator. He also talks about what he looks for in a good recruiter.

  • Top Coach 146: Tony Robichaux, Louisiana Lafayette (part 2)
Part 2 of The Cajun Way with Louisiana-Lafayette's Tony Robichaux! This time we talk a great deal about staffing (and staff development), recruiting, and philosophy. Of course, Coach Robichaux's passion comes through in every topic we cover -- including...PASSION!
We get into the topic of what Coach Robichaux's priorities are in coaching -- that is, making men out of boys. Coach Robichaux points out that "a coach makes a young man a better man."
Part 1 of our interview with Coach Robichaux can be found here.

  • Top Coach 145: Paul Rozzelle, Catawba Valley CC
The stories are what makes Top Coach an important part of the coaching arsenal, as you can learn so much from what others have done. If you're a frequent listener to Top Coach, you understand that there is no one way into or through the coaching profession. Paul Rozzelle brings his own twist to that story, as he is our only guest (so far) who didn't play inter-collegiate baseball (he was a golfer and a club baseball player). What some people may deem to be a hole in his resume hasn't held him back when it comes to his coaching career. In 2015 he took his Catawba Valley Community College squad to the NJCAA D2 World Series.
In today's episode we talk about renovating the local Legion field, the importance of a network in recruiting, the value of a junior college education, the types of players that a junior college attracts, and the re-branding campaign that he and CVCC navigated.

  • Top Coach 144: Justin Hill, McNeese State
Justin Hill envisioned a restaurant career after college, but soon determined that baseball is where he really belonged. So he kept bugging former guest Mitch Gaspard until he finally gave him a job. It wasn't all that long ago, but like most coaches, he's got plenty of stops along the way that have finally brought him home to McNeese State University.
Coach Hill says that he is a life long learner and that the key to success may lie in one's eagerness to continue to work hard and continue to learn. He says that, "If you can make somebody else better, then you can coach."
Like former guest Tony Robichaux -- just down the road in Lafayette, Coach Hill is proud of the tradition and Cajun culture of this area in southern Louisiana. When you talk to him, you'll quickly find that he believes that all the ingredients are there for a big time baseball program.
