  • Top Coach 138: Tony Robichaux, Louisiana Lafayette
Been waiting for this day for a long time. Louisiana-Lafayette's Tony Robichaux has been on our radar and we finally got him to take a little time out to talk about Cajun Baseball. And it was worth the wait. What do we love here at Top Coach? PASSION, of course. And Coach Robichaux has it in truck loads.
Louisiana Lafayette is not in what you would call a power conference, but they're definitely not one of those teams you want to see on the board when they're announcing teams in your Regional. Coach Robichaux has instilled a style of play that he calls "The Cajun Way" and his players respond every year. Here's just a taste of his down home wisdom: Coach Robichaux says, "Ego stands for Edging God Out."
Part 2 of our interview with Coach Robichaux can be found here.

  • Top Coach 137: Chris Finwood, Old Dominion
We do indeed love Virginia and we love baseball in the state of Virginia. Today we're talking to the head coach at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, Chris Finwood. Coach Finwood has taken a long route -- not unlike many college baseball coaches -- and ended up in the old neighborhood. He played his high school ball right across the bay in Hampton, Virginia and then traveled down the road a bit to Virginia Military Institute to play his college ball for four years (and he really loved the 2 am push-ups in his underwear).
Coach Finwood has a good thing going now in Norfolk, with a growing university and a baseball program that's on the verge of breaking through to the next level. Fan support is up since his arrival and the schhol's administration has demonstrated a commitment to growing the sport. In this episode Chris talks about playing midweek games against the other D1 schools in Virginia and the opportunity to coach his son.

  • Top Coach 136: Greg Brown, Nova Southeastern
When a guy comes recommended by someone like Penn State's Rob Cooper, then that's an easy addition to the Top Coach lineup. Coach Cooper first crossed paths with Nova Southeastern University's Greg Brown in their work with USA Baseball. But that's only part of Coach Brown's baseball journey. Along the way he played in the Miami Marlins' system and has been a scout for the Houston Astros. He is currently the head coach of Nova Southeastern University, located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
We've had a quite a run of NCAA D2 programs lately and it's fascinating to note the diversity of the schools and programs. While a school like Quincy University, home of past guest Josh Rabe, has an enrollment of about 1,500, Nova Southeastern checks in with more than 25,000 students.

  • Top Coach 135: Josh Rabe, Quincy University
Continuing our NCAA D2 theme, today we are happy to welcome to Top Coach the head guy at Quincy (IL) University, Josh Rabe. He is a somewhat local guy, having grown up on a farm in Illinois. The only straying he's done is while playing professional baseball for nine years.
After his playing days were done, Coach Rabe got his foot back in the door at St. Joseph's College in Indiana, before heading back to his alma mater. In his five years at the helm of the program at Quincy, Coach Rabe has guided the Hawks to a national standing among their D2 peers.

  • Top Coach 134: Marc Marizzaldi, Seton Hill
Here's a great example of actually starting a program from scratch. When Seton Hill University decided to start a baseball program in 2004, Marc Marizzaldi was the guy tabbed to get things rolling. The SHU website describes it accurately when it says that he, "built the foundation for Seton Hill Baseball from the ground up." That's no exaggeration, as Coach Marizzaldi came home every night with the dirt of the new baseball field under his fingernails.
Not satisfied with just having a program, Coach Marizzaldi has built SHU Baseball into one of the perennial powers in NCAA D2 baseball, culminating with five straight trips to the D2 tournament and a run that took them all the way to the D2 World Series in 2014.
In this episode we talk about building a program, the hotbed that Pennsylvania is for college baseball, and overcoming rejection.
