Not just about Grace, but many reincarnations
Very interesting account of a patient named Ivy who visited Dr. Goldberg trying to get to the cause of her problems through past life regression.. Through numerous regressions, it became clear that her many lives involved the same people with the same relationship and results happening over and over again... The reincarnation of Grace could be documented through research, which is why the book is titled In Search of Grace.. But the book isn't really just about Grace, it's about Ivy's many, many reincarnations.. I found it fascinating.
It's an easy listen and only about 4 hours long...
    disappointing climax
Did not like the narrators voice. seemed to stop before telling the end of the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
    The ultimate fish-out-of-water tale....
A child who never quite fit in, Rebecca Dana worshipped at the altar of Truman Capote and Nora Ephron, dreaming of one day ditching Pittsburgh and moving to New York, her Jerusalem. After graduating from college, she made her way to the city to begin her destiny. For a time, life turned out exactly as shed planned: glamorous parties; beautiful people; the perfect job, apartment, and man. But when it all came crashing down, she found herself catapulted into another world. She moves into Brooklyns enormous Lubavitch community, and lives with Cosmo, a 30-year-old Russian rabbi who practices jujitsu on the side.
While Cosmo, disenchanted with Orthodoxy, flirts with leaving the community, Rebecca faces the fact that her religion - the books, magazines, TV shows, and movies that made New York seem like salvation - has also failed her. As she shuttles between the world of religious extremism and the world of secular excess, Rebecca goes on a search for meaning.
Trenchantly observant, entertaining as hell, a mix of Shalom Auslander and The Odd Couple, Jujitsu Rabbi and the Godless Blonde is a thought-provoking coming-of-age story for the 21st century.

a story so good it can only be true
What a nice change of pace this book provides. It reads like fiction but purports to be true. The only shortcoming is that, like all true stories, there is no neat ending, so the listener is left wanting to know more about what happened to these people. The book is as interesting as the title.
It's not all it could be!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The story was great but each event, thought, or experience was retold without - who, what, when, where, &/or how.
What could Rebecca Dana have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
A possibly marvelous story would have made the grade if the 5 questions above were written into the story.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The characters and setting were almost interesting. If only reasons, background, history, or internal dialog were included. This book could have been so much more than it was. I was very disappointed
    Any additional comments?
Chasidic Crown Heights is so different, interesting, and rife with stories and history I wanted this book to be more than it was. The storyteller was, for me, just the person to fill in all the blanks. Her non-observant Jewish background would have really been ideal for this but, I guess, it would have been a ten book tome rather than a single book.

In the years leading up to the 1950s, there were no resources for the challenged. They were placed in asylums or back rooms and left to die. They were never talked about or acknowledged. They were the silent children. The ones no one wanted. The ones who were never given a chance to live. Yvonne Mason has given us a story of success in a time of failure for the challenged. She has given a voice to a child born in 1952 who became challenged. This young man was not put away. He was not shunned and he was not ignored. Jennifer Worick had a bad day. And then a bad week. She channeled her aggravation into creating the blog Things I Want to Punch in the Face, which became a sensation. Although her bad week passed, she has continued to take note of the little irritations that torment us all daily, from old guys with ponytails to 20-minute coffee prep, bizspeak to vanity plates, celebrity baby names to emoticons.
Now, just in time for the holiday season, this book showcases more than 100 of Woricks most punch-worthy aggravations, rated on a scale of 1 to 5 fists. She rants, she vents, she amuses with little factoids about the things that annoy the crap out of us. Publisher's Summary:
The eldest of three in an unconventional family making their way through the Great Depression, Betty narrates this humorous and poignant recollection. Although poor in possessions, Betty's family leads a life so rich in turmoil that it rivals today's sitcoms.
Betty's young parents tie and untie the marital knot three times amidst a string of separations. When relatives become too weary to keep the children, Betty and her siblings are dropped off at The Home for the Friendless where they enjoy three meals a day, indoor plumbing, a grassy playground, and plenty of holiday parties.
When the family reunites two years later, the roller coaster resumes as they move many times across two states, proving that love overcomes all and that normal isn't always better.

Deja vu: another time, another place, amazingly similar story
The very title captivated me so I bought the book. Immediately I got goose bumps. My orphanage was called The Home For Friendless Children, my own brother was a three year old named Bobby, everyone's fave child, including myself. Nose rags, long John's, squeezing the oleo to break the color capsule so the bag looked like it held real butter, war bonds.....what was happening here and who was this telling my own story? Since I'm about go finish my own memoir, I had to wonder what was happening. Many of the vignettes tell my own history of life in an orphanage with only a small difference in the timeline. I was not in Iowa, but across the country on the east coast. The reasons that put me there are very different than Betty's. My mother was widowed in 1940, War was breathing down her neck, so she placed her three kids in an orphanage and went to work making ammo for the Navy. In 1947 the orphanage was renamed to The Children's Home. Reading this book reminds me that today's generation knows little of the details of life on the home front when the whole world was at War. While my own recounting contains many similarities, the differences are stark, and worth telling. Her sharing of the pathos and hilarity gives impetus to my own and validates my purpose: to shed light on the valiant men and women who contributed to the war effort, held it together and moved it forward while war in our soil, was kept at bay. Well written and engaging, informative and entertaining, her story moves forward without losing interest and most importantly, reveals the young life of a person able to survive adversity with great good humor and endless tenacity. The part about playing Indian is right out of my own experience!
    Truly Inspirational
The storytelling in The Home for the Friendless is exceptional and engaging. Betty uses her God-given talents to weave a story of fortitude, courage, and acceptance of her life's circumstances to bring to fruition her parents' talents despite their many downfalls. I enjoy stories like this because of the personal responsibility Betty and her siblings took in making something of their lives despite the hard times they experienced in their growing up years. Because of her giftedness in the arts, in so many areas, such as theatrical, musical, artistic, writing, storytelling, and teaching, I am promoting this book through my homilies and Bible study groups.

Title: Remembering the Music, Forgetting the Words

    Narrator: Catherine Gaffney
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-08-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 11 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of the much-loved memoir Cottage for Sale, Must Be Moved comes an engaging and inspiring account of a daughter who must face her mothers premature decline.
In Remembering the Music, Forgetting the Words, Kate Whouley strips away the romantic veneer of mother-daughter love to bare the toothed and tough reality of caring for a parent who is slowly losing her mind. Yet, this is not a dark or dour look at the demon of Alzheimers. Whouley shares the trying, the tender, and the sometimes hilarious moments in meeting the challenge also known as Mom.
As her mother, Anne, falls into forgetting, Kate remembers for her. In Anne we meet a strong-minded, accidental feminist with a weakness for unreliable men. The first woman to apply for - and win - a department-head position in her school system, Anne was an innovative educator who poured her passion into her work. House-proud too, she made certain her Hummel figurines were dusted and arranged just so. But as her memory falters, so does her housekeeping. Surrounded by stacks of dirty dishes, piles of laundry, and months of unopened mail, Anne needs Kates help - but she doesnt want to relinquish her hard-won independence any more than she wants to give up smoking.
Time and time again, Kate must balance Annes often nonsensical demands with what she believes are the best decisions for her mothers comfort and safety. This is familiar territory for anyone who has had to help a loved one in decline, but Kate finds new and different ways to approach her mother and her forgetting. Shuddering under the weight of accumulating bills and her mothers frustrating, circular arguments, Kate realizes she must push past difficult family history to find compassion, empathy, and good humor.
When the memories, the names, and then the words begin to fade, it is the music that matters most to Kates mother. Holding hands after a concert, a flute case slung over Kates shoulder, and a shared joke between them, their relationship is healed - even in the face of a dreaded and deadly diagnosis. Memory, Kate Whouley writes, is overrated.
    Critic Reviews:
"Remembering the Music, Forgetting the Words made me want to go hug my mother. It also made me want to go hug Kate Whouley for her generous, fearless and spot-on recounting of a mother-daughter relationship during its most tragic yet poignantly beautiful years." (Suzanne Strempek Shea, author of Sundays In America)
"An exceptional memoir that reminds us - often with surprising humor - of the richness of life in good times and bad. Remembering the Music, Forgetting the Words is great companion for caregivers." (David Dosa MD, author of Making Rounds With Oscar)

    Excellent Narrator, Insightful author
Catherine Gaffney is an excellent narrator. Kate Whouley is a brilliant writer. as someone who is living with a person with dementia, I found Kate's book to be insightful, encouraging, and compassionate. I'd often find myself recounting certain sections of the book to my husband, saying, "Kate's mom reminds me of dad." or, "Did you know people with dementia [fill in the blank].

    Title: Saving Ben
Subtitle: A Father's Story of Autism
    Author: Dan E. Burns
    Narrator: William Coon
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-24-12
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Each year thousands of children are diagnosed with autism, a devastating neurological disorder that profoundly affects a person's language and social development. Saving Ben is the story of one family coping with autism, told from the viewpoint of a father struggling to understand his son's strange behavior and rescue him from a downward spiral.
"Take him home, love him, and save your money for his institutionalization when he turns 21." That was the best advice his doctor could offer in 1990 when three-year-old Ben was diagnosed with autism. Saving Ben tells the story of Ben's regression as an infant into the world of autism and his journey toward recovery as a young adult. His father, Dan Burns, puts the reader in the passenger's seat as he struggles with medical service providers, the school system, extended family, and his own limitations in his efforts to pull Ben out of his darkening world.
Ben, now 21 years old, is a work in progress. The full force and fury of the autism storm have passed. Using new biomedical treatments, repair work is underway. Saving Ben is a story of Ben's journey toward recovery, and a family's story of loss, grief, and healing.
"Keep the faith, never give up." These are the lessons of the author's miraculous journey, saving Ben.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is a significant work to help inform parents of autistic children. Dan Burns shows he is a pioneer in his struggle to recover his son." (Dr. Constantine Kotsanis, Wellness Metabolic Institute)
    Members Reviews:
    Funny, touching
A brilliantly-written book that takes the reader into the heart of what is faced by families with autistic children. Burnsâs detailed, closely observed scenes make for a fast, page-turner of a memoir. As the father of a son similar to Ben, I can attest to the living, breathing truth of what is related here. Funny, touching, and heart-rending by turns, the book is impossible to put down after youâve started reading it. It's more than an excellent way to learn about autism; it's also a fine literary memoir for anybody who likes literature. The scene presenting the authorâs breathless search for Wacky Wild Kool-Aid is itself worth the price of the book. Unforgettable read.
    I loved reading this book.
I loved reading this book. It has helped me understand that parents, whether married or divorced, must do what is in the best interest of the autistic child/children. Parents must never try to alienate the child/children from the other parent because children need to spend time with both parents. This book illustrates that point beautifully!
Mom of a special needs child
I am a mother of a child with multiple disabilties and just finished a book of my own about my son. I was initially inerested in this book because I felt that maybe I could connect with the father. Sadly, I am amazed that this book is rated so highly. I felt that I was being generous in giving it 3 stars! The beginning of the story is disjointed and hard to follow. My mother is reading it now and is having difficulty in getting past chapter 1. If you can get past that first chapter, this is an adequate story about family drama (much like a novel). I did not find the author to be a "powerful" writer or spectacular in any way. I found the writing very average.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
Transformation Road takes the listener on the long and often tragic journey of Sean Anderson's battle with food and morbid obesity spanning just about his entire life. His experience with declaring war with himself graphically depicts the tortured soul of most of us who face an addictive and pathological relationship with food. Having won many a battle but inevitably losing his war, Sean offers us some insight as to who the real enemy has been.
    Critic Reviews:
"Transformation Road takes the reader away from the typical weight loss fixes and asks the reader to consider the nature of emotional eating and the "symptom" of obesity. The author reveals his "moment of clarity" and the resultant decision to declare a truce with his war with food. What follows is Sean's recipe for food addiction recovery. Although incorporating some suggestions that run contrary to some recovered food addicts, Sean's experiences are worth learning about and considering." Transformation Road
I listen to Sean's podcast and now read his blog daily.
He is so genuine and moving. I like that fact that he was completely honest and up front about everything. It's hard to be that personal like an open book.
This book I will listen to again and again.
No one could have narrated his story any better.
    I just LOVE Sean's voice!!
I added this to my arsenal of healthy weight tools to keep me where I need to be.
Many many thanks to Sean for telling his story.
Surreptitious advertising for the food industry
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This is just another diet book that cannot go three pages without naming a brand of pizza, soda pop, cake etc... If you were writing a book to help alcoholics overcome an addiction, would you write Jack Daniels, Budweiser, Vodka, Spiced Rum, Coors, Jim Beam on every third page? In a movie, this is called product placement, and companies pay to have thier products included. In a diet and weight loss book, it is even more insidious advertising, because it goes directly into the mind of the most vulnerable audience, and most likely to go buy whatever product you planted in their minds within a day or so. Which will hopefully, ignite or re ignite the addiction. This particular book, cannot get 5 pages in before naming a pizza brand and talk about cake, biscuits and sausage gravy, and eating and food food food. As I listen to chapter one of the audio book version, the author literally, cannot go 3 minutes without putting junk food and eating into the mind of the reader/listener. NOTHING else this author says matters as far as I am concerned. That is ALL you are meant to get out of a book like this. It is advertising junk food to the weak and vulnerable. Plain and simple.
Would you recommend Transformation Road - My Trip to Over 500 Pounds and Back to your friends? Why or why not?
See step 3. No, I cannot recommend anything written to promote junk food to those suffering from obesity.
What three words best describe Sean A.
