Title: My New Orleans, Gone Away
Subtitle: A Memoir of Loss and Renewal
    Author: Peter M. Wolf
    Narrator: Steve Coulter
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 49 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-17-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In this poignant and vivid memoir, Peter M. Wolf, a member of one of New Orleanss oldest Jewish families, provides an insiders look at his fabled city and the wider world beyond that he comes to inhabit.
Written with humor and telling detail, My New Orleans contains rare insight about the social structure of New Orleans; student life at Exeter, Tulane and Yale; the thrill of original scholarship; around the world travel before jets; medical school trauma; ingrained southern racism, and anti-Semitism; and American students role in anti-Vietnam uprisings in Paris. In the background, he traces the rags to riches rise and fall of his citys and his familys engagement in the cotton, sugar and retail trades.
After a year of medical school at Columbia, and continuing his journey of self-discovery, Wolf returns to New Orleans to work in his fathers cotton brokerage and simultaneously earns a masters degree at Tulane. In spite of a spicy love affair, his residence in a glorious French Quarter courtyard, his purchase of a dilapidated building he expects to restore, and growing prominence in his community, Wolf returns to the east. He completes doctoral studies at NYU and becomes an architectural historian, a profession in which he earns considerable prominence.
The authors complicated and achingly explored romantic life is slammed to a close by a saucy, waspy, ex-pat from Texas whom he meets in Paris during his year as a Fulbright scholar, and subsequently marries.
Reflecting the yearnings and anxieties of a generation that came of age after World War II, this is the iconic journey of a restless man who leaves the hometown he loves to discover the world, and in so doing, to find himself. My New Orleans offers a penetrating and memorable account of a fading period of Americas evolution, turbulence and possibilities, as unique as the city of Wolfs memory.
    Critic Reviews:
A heartfelt, intimate, and painfully honest account of the coming of age of one shy boy and of the exotic city he left behind, but will never forget. A story of the courage of breaking away and the you are there descriptions of places and people that make the reader part of this narrative of struggle and triumph. (Barbara Goldsmith, author of the bestselling Little Gloria, Happy at Last)
My New Orleans, Gone Away is the triumph of a memoirist with the eye of an architect and the heart of a poet. With admiration, and occasionally, awe, I shared the development of his feelings and taste. This may very well be a modest classic of that enchanted citys art, culture, lifestyle and vanishing monuments. (Sidney Offit, author of Memoir of the Bookies Son)
Peter Wolfs book is a charming, insightful memoir, which is beautifully written and descriptive of what it was like to grow up Jewish in New Orleans in the mid-20th century. Peters journey is worth reading for those who enjoy memoirs steeped with interesting people, places and experiences. (Scott Cowen, president, Tulane University)

    Two Thumbs Up
Even though it started out rather slow (I thought it was going to be too much of a personal memoir at first) -- I think it was necessary to give the reader insight to the author's formative years. I was born 10 years after Peter Wolf and technically grew up in Baton Rouge although my family had close ties to New Orleans and I attended school there.

    Title: Bigger than the Game

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 21 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
After nearly a decade in the minors, Dirk Hayhurst defied the odds to climb onto the pitcher's mound for the Toronto Blue Jays. Newly married, with a big league paycheck and a brand new house, Hayhurst was ready for a great season in the Bigs.
Then fate delivered a crushing hit. Hayhurst blew out his pitching shoulder in an insane off-season workout program. After surgery, rehab, and more rehab, his major-league dreams seemed more distant than ever.
From there things got worse, weirder, and funnier. In a crazy world of injured athletes, autograph-seeking nuns, angry wrestlers, and trainers with a taste for torture, Hayhurst learned lessons about the gameand himselfthat were not in any rulebook. Honest, soul-searching, insightful, hilarious, and moving, Dirk Hayhurst's latest memoir is an indisputable baseball classic.
    Critic Reviews:
"The best writer in a baseball uniform." (Tyler Kepner, The New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
Broken Athletes and What it Means to be Human
I have read all four of Dirk Hayhurst's books now and have enjoyed each one of them. Where the first three predominately focused on the lighter side of baseball (with terrific background into his troubled family, his supportive romance and subsequent marriage), "Bigger Than the Game" takes a slightly different tack. Dirk gets injured and his experiences move to the trials and tribulations of dealing with rehab, teammates resentful of his writing, and the realization that what makes one good on the field of competition is not necessarily what gives one an acceptable quality of life.
Dirk Hayhurst's writing is vulnerable and real. We are privy to the rarely seen shadow world of pro sports rehabbing and psychologists. A particularly funny section of the book takes place at the world famous Andrews Clinic in Birmingham, where Hayhurst encounters sadistic trainers, a baseball crazy nun, a living ghost of the old south, and wrestler Triple H.
The world of the injured player can be a difficult one. âI donât think being lonely has anything to do with the number of people youâre around,â writes Hayhurst. Largely separated from the team during their physical rehab regimen, players are suddenly removed from the game they have devoted their lives to from an early age. With time suddenly on their hands basic insecurities often rise and introspection follows. Some cannot handle it. Some become depressed and turn to pain meds, some turn to alcohol, and some face difficult home lives. âSpring training for the injured is like detention. While everyone else is out having fun, sharing experiences in the game they love, youâre stuck inside doing tedious busywork.â While teams now often provide a sports psychologist to help players work through these problems, actually going to see one is seen as a sign of weakness by many in the game.
Hayhurst finally does go to the psychologist, albeit reluctantly, and works to come to terms with his difficulties. Professional sports is a business, and as a business it is performance based. âItâs like this,â he writes. âThis whole industry is morally bankrupt. Itâs full of fakes and bastards and arrogant SOBs who can get away with murder as long as they play great.

    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
On April 19, 1995, Kathy Sanders' life was changed forever when a bomb exploded and destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City, killing her two grandsons Chase and Colton.
For months, Kathy struggled with coping and wondered if the God she'd worshipped all her life even existed. After battling bitterness and contemplating suicide, she turned to the Lord and asked what He'd have her do. The answer was clear: Forgive your enemies.
Thus Kathy forged a friendship with Terry Nichols, one of the men convicted in the bombing, via phone conversations, letters, and even face-to-face meetings.
She also began searching for answers about what happened that fateful day in April and found opportunities to cultivate relationships with Nichols' children, mother, sister, wife, and ex-wife in separate turns. She demonstrated the same type of warmth to family members of Timothy McVeigh, the second man convicted of orchestrating the bombing. Her courageous efforts of extending compassion and grace gave her peace and removed the bitterness from her life.
With photos, interviews, and actual letters exchanged between Kathy and Terry Nichols, Now You See Me tells the story of one woman who walked the road less traveled and forgave the unforgivable.
    Members Reviews:
This book will indelibly edify the life and times of those who read it!
Finally, a book about personal happiness minus a "how to" format. Rather, it's an electrifying memoir of a grandmother who
nurtured the children of the man who slaughtered her grandchildren. In Now You See Me, Kathy Sanders explains her haunting
depression that birthed her pending suicide, only to rescue herself by forming a deep and lasting relationship with Terry
Nichols, one of two men convicted for the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. In all, 168
people were massacred, including Ms. Sanders' grandsons, ages two and three. In riveting detail, Ms. Sanders relays how she donned a personal disguise to sabotage security surrounding Nichols inside the Oklahoma City jail. Once alone outside his cell, she secretly met him face-to-face to openly talk one-on-one. Outside, thousands of unsuspecting Oklahomans had screamed for
Nichols' execution. Many would have violently attacked Ms. Sanders had they known she was pursuing her psychological
stability by forgiving the man behind an unforgivable crime. To this day, that bombing remains the worst act of terrorism ever
enacted by Americans on American soil. And there's more....much more....in this spellbinding and controversial book.
A powerful and moving account of overcoming great loss and acheiving peace
In my career as a psychiatrist my patients who had lost young children had the hardest time recovering from the loss, often being caught in unrelenting grief and anger for many years. Kathy Sanders lost two young grandchildren, who lived with her, in the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. This book is a narrative of the loss, the effects on her, and how she managed over time to get to a place of true forgiveness for one of the people involved in killing her grandchildren (Terry Nichols). She was able to reach out with compassion and love to Nichols' relatives as well as to the father of Timothy McVeigh, the convicted and executed murderer of her grandchildren.

    Publisher's Summary:
Jimmy Failla (AXS TV, BBC America) is a D-list standup comic with zero life skills beyond overeating and blowing exorbitant amounts of money on exotic gambling propositions. But when his wife gets pregnant, he realizes he'll need to do some growing up if he wants to avoid raising a career criminal. Thinking fast, he decides to get a taxi license and pick the brains of his passengers in hopes of gleaning the practical knowledge he'll need to convincingly play an adult someday. In the months that follow, Failla fills notebook after notebook with flawless life lessons given to him by major experts, including racist sock puppets, drug addled celebrities, military counterfeiters, and beer drinking goats. Follow That Car!: A Cabbie's Guide to Conquering Fears, Achieving Dreams, and Finding a Public Restroom is the survival guide that matured out of those notes.
In addition to imparting advice, the audiobook also recounts Failla's hilarious attempts at show business, preparing for fatherhood, and holding a marriage together despite having no sleep and nowhere to live. Ride along as he performs standup comedy for the New York Mets, flees drug deals gone bad, finds a public restroom, and still gets the cab back to the garage by five...most of the time.

    A book of metaphors
Had a hard time with this one. Hoped it would be funnier than it was.
    Fun!
    What a great fun book.
This is basically Jimmy Failla's life over a nine month period of time for the most part. He is a stand up comic basically unknown during the time period of this book. He finds out his wife is pregnant and needs to earn extra money now that he will have a baby. So he goes to work driving a yellow cab in NYC. He writes down all the life lessons his passengers have given him along the way. This book is acting out events during that time in his life.
I found that this book was the perfect length...even tho it left me wanting more of these funny stories. Hopefully there will be another book some day.
Normally I shun books read by the author as 9/10 the author has no ability to narrate. Autobiographies are the other way around 9/10 no one can read your life like you! Failla's voice was great! A really long stand up routine but so much more! I listened to this pretty much in a single listen, so easy to listen to and I found it never lagged in content allow way to the end. Next thing to do is to go and check out one Jimmy Failla's stand up shows in NYC.
    Well worth the Audio version
Would you listen to Follow That Car! again? Why?
Yes. I really enjoyed the things the author learned from his passengers and find real practical value in those things.
What does Jimmy Failla bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
This audio book has actors, sound effects, music, and felt to be of high production value. I don't know if someone is hard up for an actual "Audio-book" but if your hoping for something that sounds like the author or reader reading to you the whole time, I would pass on it.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The advice from the old man that worked at carnivals will stick with me forever.
    Any additional comments?
I listened to this in between rides while driving my cab.

Get Ready for a Bumpy Ride
Ariel Gores sensitive, sardonic memoir of her mothers death from cancer is not what you'd expect. This was no graceful exit.
When Ariel's mother, who found too much humor in repeated watchings of "Mommy Dearest;" who got herself banned from three different Portland cab companies for histrionics, calls her up with the news that she has terminal lung cancer, Ariel realizes she's going to have to step up to the plate to take care of her.
But as Admiral Ackbar says, "It's a trap!"
Yes, her mother is dying, but she's going to burn down the funeral home on the way out. Ariel loses her home, her lover, and nearly, her wits as her manipulative mother makes further and further demands, and exacts revenge if those demands aren't met.
Ariel finds the strength, the humor, and the whiskey to keep at it and keep it together. She does what she must to see her mother through to the end and she stays on her path to find peace and new love in the end.
Ariel's own voice was the only choice for this reading. Who else could bring all the nuance of conflicting emotions to such a tough book to get right?

During the first 17 years of his life, spent in Shanghai, Sam experienced wars, changing regimes, different currencies, and a variety of schools that reflected the evolving political landscape. In a world obsessed with conflicting nationalism, his family survived as stateless residents, neither subject to, nor the responsibility of, any country. They were instead, sustained by their Russian Jewish culture and community. Through Sam's memories of early life and his love of history, we learn of Shanghai's uniqueness as a home and haven to thousands of Jews over many centuries.
    Members Reviews:
A lovingly told story of turbulent times
This book is not a scholarly book on the Shanghai Jews. It is nothing more than a personal memoire, a gift from a grandfather to his grandchildren narrated (I bought the audio book) by that grandfather himself. Sam Moshinsky, todah. It is precisely what we most needed to hear. By 'we' I mean the children of Russian (specifically Odessan) Jews who fled Stalinist Russia for Siberia (Vladivostok) and then crossed to Manchuria. We, the children, the grandchildren, and the great-grandchildren of those Jews who went to China needed to hear this story from one who was willing to tell it whole. On behalf of the now departed Harbin Jews: Moses Albin and Xenia Subkis, and of my father-in-law, Boris who is still with us at the age of 91 (who all left Harbin for Japan and then for Mexico), THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. You filled a void of what was really like for Boris, my father-in-law, to be a child in those times. Todah, chaver.
A memory of hard times that dull with age
Although Sam Moshinsky is only a year older than me, and we both lived in Shanghai before, during, and after World War II in Shanghai, we never met. Thus, it was a great pleasure for me to read his memoir and to be reminded of those days, whether or not they were enjoyable. He writes of a time in the international environment of Shanghai that no longer exists, and will never return no matter how many foreigners live in Shanghai today. The ice cream cups we could buy in movie theaters after the war had a paraffin coating and were manufactured by his fatherâs company, the Shanghai Cardboard Box Factory. It was a delight to read âGoodbye Shanghaiâ and to be reminded so well of the lives we once lived in Shanghai.
    I really enjoyed it.
I found this book to be a very intimate look at life in Shanghai during the war years. I felt I was there with Sam walking the Bund and crossing Garden Bridge. I really enjoyed it.
    Five Stars
    Excellent
    A book everyone must read.
If you look for Goodbye Shanghai in a Library, it would probably be found under "autobiography". However, this book is far more than that. It is a social history of a turbulent time in the world, a geography lesson, a fascinating personal journey from what is now the Ukraine to Shanghai culminating in a wonderful life in Australia.

    Great insight into WW 1
What made the experience of listening to All I See is Mud the most enjoyable?
This book is narrated beautifully by the grandson of the main character. A great insight into the total innocence of these young men who were thrust into this bloody and brutal war, yet seemingly they kept their innocence and humour.

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
As a married man and Stanford graduate student nearing thirty, Christopher Donner would likely have qualified for an exemption from the draft. Like most of his generation, however, he responded promptly to the call to arms after Pearl Harbor. His wartime experiences in the Pacific Theater were seared into his consciousness, and in early 1946 he set out to preserve those memories while they were still fresh.
During the spring of 1943 Donner joined the Marines' 9th defense Battalion and saw his first combat service in the campaign for New Georgia in the Solomon Islands. With the end of Japanese resistance in the Central Solomons, Donner's battalion was dispatched in June 1944 to serve in the liberation of the U.S. territory of Guam. When his unit was reactivated and its veterans sent home, Donner was not so fortunate.
In early 1945, Donner was reassigned to the 11th Marines, the 1st Marine Division's field artillery. His new commander decreed that Donner would serve as a field artillery forward observer just in time for the invasion of Okinawa. Teeming with close calls and near misses, frank yet sensitive observations of the brutality visited on Okinawa's civilians, and the horrors of frontline combat, Donner's account of his service with the Old Breed on Okinawa forms the core of his memoir. Miraculously unscathed by the Okinawa bloodbath, Donner was en route to California for his first opportunity for leave when he learned of the atomic bombs and the war's end.
Besides providing a candid, moving contemporary record of the combat experiences of a Marine Corps officer, Pacific Time on Targetis an invaluable account of the harrowing life of an artillery forward observer, as few of these men survived to tell their stories.
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting, detailed personal account.
My older son and I are avid readers of WWII history. This particular book was of interest to me because my father was also a Marine artillery officer in the South Pacific during the war. I could give the book a higher rating, but it reads as it was originally recorded from personal memoirs, and as such, is a bit disjointed. As a historical record, I find it fascinating to read any personal account of the war, and I did find this work to be enjoyable.
If you are looking for an easy to read novel, this is likely not for you. If you are interested in first hand accounts of WWII in the pacific theater, you will find this to be a good read and a great addition to any WWII library.
    Good story
I enjoyed the story. As a retired Marine Corps officer, I found the story line riveting. Factual accounts are always better than fiction.
I would recommend the book to anyone interested in personal histories.
    Dangerous places
One of the best wartime experiences this reader has enjoyed. Not quite to the standard of his Marine colleague Sledge, but a good companion book for the earlier classic. He covers some of the same ground as Sledge, especially in Okinawa, but provides an officer's perspective. He has valuble insights into the qualities needed in forward observers for artillery.
    The War really was Hell
Christopher Donner presents us with a unique perspective, what it was like to be a front line officer doing a job where
    the life expectancy was minimal.

We quickly became the typical I-must-talk-to-you-every-night-and-drive-over-to-your-house-at-10-p.m.-because-I-absolutely-cannot-go-to-sleep-if-I'm-not-in-the-same-bed-as-you couple falling in love...But just as quickly our honeymoon period came to an end. At first it wasn't clear. And then it was very clear. And then it was so f--king clear that John and I found ourselves driving to Beverly Hills for couples therapy.
When Jennifer Lehr found herself, at age twenty-eight, falling in love with a brilliant, kind, supportive comic named John, she breathed a sigh of relief. After a decade spent in a string of destined-to-fail relationships, and countless hours of therapy trying to repair the damage, her Mr. Right had come along.
Even Jennifer's judgmental grandparents had no choice but to succumb to John's considerable charms. Happily ever after? Not so fast. True love, Jennifer soon discovers, doesn't necessarily go hand-in-hand with a white-hot sex life. Just months into the relationship, she finds herself grappling with the question: What do you do when you find the committed, loving partnership you've always hoped for, but the sex is just so-so...that is, when and if it happens at all?
Distraught, yet dedicated to making their relationship work, Jennifer and John embark on couples therapy, twelve-step meetings, romantic getaways, Scheduled Date Nights...and their gritty determination begins to pay off.
Looking back at her life (sexual history, botched romances, neurotic parents) while tracing her and John's bumpy progress toward marriage, what emerges is a provocative, courageously honest, poignant, and ultimately cheering chronicle of one woman's sexual odyssey. Ill-Equipped for a Life of Sex is the quintessential modern-era love story - complete with confused expectations, myths of romantic love, and the overriding hope that a successful relationship can be forged from the rubble.

An All-Time Great Book of Married Sex
What happens when youve found the love of your life, but the sex quickly becomes just so-so? If youre Jennifer Lehr, you pull up your boot straps and MAKE it workcouples therapy, sex therapy, and plain old date night until, eventually, it really does work.
"Ill-Equipped" is probably one of the all-time great books about a marriage falling apart and a woman whose husband is disinterested in sex with her. Lehr is unsparing, funny, insightful, heartbreaking, and relatable.
Emily Zeller pulls off the snarky L.A. pragmatist, and brings out the humor and hurt in the writing.
Not for Everyone -- But I Loved It
When I first stumbled across this audiobook, it had yet to be reviewed by the Audible listener community. So I went to Amazon where Jennifer Lehr is personally EXCORIATED by reviewer after reviewer. Multiple reviews include the words self-absorbed, spoiled, and narcissistic. The writing is described as stilted, puerile and immature. One reviewer even mentioned the Lehrs child, noting that she will have to read the painfully embarrassing and pointless details of her moms promiscuity, chilly inability to enjoy sex, shrewish control freak behavior, materialism and the utterly demeaning and heartless way her mother has publicly castrated her father. OUCH.
But, there were also a number of five star reviews that praised Ms. Lehrs writing as engaging, compelling, fun, and courageous.
