    Title: The Quickening Maze
    Author: Adam Foulds
    Narrator: Colin Moody
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 7 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-10
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Based on real events in Epping Forest on the edge of London around 1840, The Quickening Maze centres on the first incarceration of the great nature poet John Clare. After years struggling with alcohol, critical neglect and depression, Clare finds himself in High Beach Private Asylum - an institution run on reformist principles which would later become known as occupational therapy. At the same time another poet, the young Alfred Tennyson, moves nearby and becomes entangled in the life and catastrophic schemes of the asylum's owner, the peculiar, charismatic Dr Matthew Allen. For John Clare, a man who had grown up steeped in the freedoms and exhilarations of nature, who thought 'the edge of the world was a day's walk away', a locked door is a kind of death.
This intensely lyrical novel describes his vertiginous fall, through hallucinatory episodes of insanity and dissolving identity, towards his final madness. Historically accurate, but brilliantly imagined, the closed world of High Beach and its various inmates - the doctor, his lonely daughter in love with Tennyson, the brutish staff and John Clare himself - are brought vividly to life. Outside the walls is Nature, and Clare's paradise: the birds and animals, the gypsies living in the forest; his dream of home, of redemption, of escape.
Rapturous yet precise, exquisitely written, rich in character and detail, this is a remarkable and deeply affecting book: a visionary novel which contains a world.
    Critic Reviews:
"It's a work of strikingly beautiful, unforced writing." (Daily Express)

Rural Muse and a Vision of Sin
I must rate this as the best new novel by a new writer that I have read for some time - and was thrilled to find this after reading very positive reviews that I am in complete agreement that this is a remarkable work, remarkable for the precision and vitality of its perceptions and the successful intricacy of its prose. It is a novel that I think will easily stand a second reading later in the year or early next, on the basis of the beauty and depth of its descriptive passages - which fit extraordinarily well between the beams of John Clare and Alfred Lord Tennyson around which the narrative is built. A notable high point for me what the descriptions and passages of religious-mania found in the more unstable and unsavoury characters lodged away from the main house. Will send me back to Tennyson and exploring towards John Clare - the rural idyll seems to be a theme to which I am increasingly drawn in my now middle-age with yearnings towards Vaughn Williams and the Chants d'Auvergne. Principally, however, it is a real delight to find a new young English novelist to rave about - what a talent, what a prospect, what a pleasure.
    Brilliant in every aspect
Can't recommend it highly enough. Anyone interested in altered states of mind will be fascinated . The writing skills are remarkable.
    One to avoid!!
Nothing actually happens in this book, unless I missed something really exciting when the boredom lulled me into a semi-comatose state. But I very much doubt it! To make things worse, the accents are really annoying - Janet from Dr Finlay's Casebook meets Alfed Lord Tennyson with a broad Yorshire accent! How awful is that!

    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Cradle Cross in 1933 is a town in the heart of Black Country, England, still reeling from the Great War and dominated by a button factory in terminal decline. Into this exotically grim environment arrives a white-haired young woman from the coast named Isa Fly. Isa is a mysterious and magnetic presence who exerts a romantic pull on everyone she meets. Motherless, 13-year-old Ruby Tailor is instantly drawn to her, as is Captin, the proprietor of the local chip shop, a 50-year-old bachelor and father figure to Ruby, and Truda Blick, the Oxford-educated spinster whos inherited the failing button factory. As the reasons for Isas sudden appearance become less clear with each passing day, she is viewed with increasing suspicion by the tight-knit women of Cradle Cross who come to see her as the cause of the towns accelerating misfortunes and ultimately fear her as a witch.
Anna Lawrence Pietroni, in her fiction debut, captures for the first time the dialect of Black Country, and the effect is utterly mesmerizing. Cradle Cross is a town out of timebattered by war and yet linked to a distant past, an isolated pocket of the country whose customs and views have remained intact since medieval times, where talismans protect loved ones and rituals can help wring away the grief of loss.
Anna Lawrence Pietroni has created two uniquely alluring charactersRuby and Isaand spins a story that feels mythical or folkloric, that is driven by a mystery, throbs with tension, and ends in conflagration. Rubys Spoon combines a gritty, hypervivid realism with the dreamlike richness of a fable.
    Critic Reviews:
This enthralling, suspenseful debut novelhas the feel of a grim fairy tale...Of the many riches it offers, it is the winning lead character, a lonely teen brave enough to have a dream despite her impoverished circumstances, who will capture readers hearts. (Booklist)
Mystery, witchcraft, and a precocious young narrator enliven Pietronis debut...Ruby's Spoon is one of those bright narrators whose insights into the treacheries of the adult world are heartrending...Fans of Hardy, Dickens, and, more recently, Michel Faber and Sarah Waters will find much to enjoy. (Publishers Weekly)

    Difficult to Listen
The accent of the narrator was beautiful, and the problem was that I found myself getting lost in the accent and not hearning the novel. Wish I had passed on this one.
    Hard to follow
The dialect and colloquialisms of its cast of characters made it hard for me to follow.

Length: 5 hrs and 34 mins

    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
It is June 13th, 1940. Terry, seven, and his brother Jack, eleven, stand in a crowd of children on the platform at Welling station. Wearing labels, carrying gas masks and small suitcases, they are evacuees, awaiting the train which will take them to their unknown destination and new lives.
In the tiny Cornish hamlet of Doublebois, the woods and river become their playground; rabbit-catching and night-fishing their new pastimes. But it is the railway, above all, which delights them. It is the richest of childhoods, full of colour, humour and the unselfish love that Uncle Jack, a Welsh ex-miner, and his wife, Auntie Rose, offer without reserve to the two young strangers. And despite fierce rivalry between local kids and the vackies, village life seems wonderful to the boys.
Warm-hearted and moving, Kisses on a Postcard is a vivid and intimate portrait of a neglected part of our wartime history; a compelling and uplifting memoir of growing up in an extraordinary time.

    Entertaining but mawkish
    Any additional comments?
Interesting and moving childhood story written by a TV producer. He clearly has consummate skill in creating dramatic fiction and admits that he has given free rein to his dramatic impulses in creating his autobiography. The result is overly mawkish but still deserves a recommendation.

    Gold fever strikes!
A rousing tale of the overwhelming power of the yellow metal and it's effects on the human spirit. An excellent, fast read tied together with quirky, believable characters. Mr. Hodgson's background in mining shines through and his research is impeccable. I would highly recommend this book to all. The author just keeps getting better and better.

    Lame
This book has nothing to do with the description. I am sure someone made a mistake in the summary and was talking about another book. They bear no resemblance to each other. This book was like listening to a Harlequin Romance.

    A dark and beautiful story
When I started listening to this book, I felt the tone so dreary and monotone that I wondered how long I would last. But I became totally absorbed with Agnes and her view of the world in early 18th century. It is a beautiful story that exists in a dark and gloomy world. I have loved the experience.
Must be made into a film!
I couldn't stop listening to this book. Brilliantly drawn characters, wonderful descriptions of life London and Sussex at that time. The writing is fresh and intense and the idea of the plot centred around the manufacture of fireworks so original I could easily imagine scenes from a film, I hope the book will be adapted for the big screen soon.

    Publisher's Summary:
So Atticus, one of Rome's few experienced sailors, finds himself propelled into the middle of a political struggle that is completely foreign to him. Rome need to build a navy fast but the obstacles are many; political animosities, legions adamant that they will only use their traditional methods; Roman prejudice even from friends, that all those not born in Rome are inferior citizens.
The enemy are first class, experienced and determined to control the seas. Can Atticus, and the fledgling Roman navy, staffed with inexperienced sailors and unwilling legionaries, out-wit and out-fight his opponents.
SHIP OF ROME, full of magnificent sea-battles, packed with strong characters, torn between two powerful empires, is the first book in a new series, MASTERS OF THE SEA, by a brilliant new author.

    Rip Roaring!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Always thought Roman history was boring? Wrong! Give this one a try, you'll be hooked on the first chapter...
What other book might you compare Ship of Rome to, and why?
Excitement and naval action like the Bolitho or Hornblower novels but set in an older yet equally rich context. The political intrigue and machinations of the leaders reminds you that not too much has changed in the world.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
As an opening gambit the first chapter is a killer. Starting you on the coastal patrol if not the high seas with a detailed and engaging cast. The action starts fast and hits ramming speed while illustrating a rarely covered element of the Roman era; their navy.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
If you're not gnashing your teeth at the pettiness of the rulers in the first half you are far too forgiving... And the contrast with the detailed back-story of the protagonists is a joy.
    Any additional comments?
If you take a chance on one audiobook this summer, make it this one. I was so impressed I took a weekend flight to Rome and visited some of the key locations mentioned. Listening to the story where it was set was magical!
    Ship of Rome
This is a fabulous listen starting right from the very first chapter which is a battle scene. If you like adventure this book will not dissapoint you as it is packed with action from start to end. Laurence Kennedy does a great job narrating with good accents and easily recognised character voices.
