    Absorbing historical tale
While this is the second in a series yet in progress, I didn't find it necessary to have any prior knowledge - the book is entirely self-contained (if leaving the reader/listener eager to see what happens next!).
An utterly absorbing tale that wraps you up and takes you with it. The gentle voice of the narrator makes it clear who is speaking at all times, and paints a picture of the ancient British landscape and the magic it holds.
Ideal for older children and adults alike. I hope to hear more from this series in future!

    So disappointed
I haven't read BTB for a good many years. I remember A Woman of Substance as a fierce battle of will power to not just put down and move on to something else when suddenly at about page 200, I finally got hooked. I read all the books in the Emma Harte saga. This time it didn't happen. I have finished all three books in the series but will not be looking for another book by this author. I am so disappointed.
wasn't sure I was going to like Elizabeth's story
At first, wasn't sure I was going to like Elizabeth's story. As it progressed and she became more confident, the story picked up and she really became strong-willed and agressive in her decisions regarding the company. Of course, Elizabeth had a very knowledgeable group helping her to manage the company. The only thing that bothered me was her reluctance to marry Robin. Now Ms. Bradford will have to write a continuation to tell us who is going to become the next heir. Or maybe, we are left wondering on purpose??!! Thank you for another great series.
    Great Book
I loved this series from the very first book. This, the last one, pulls all the story lines together and held my interest to the very last page.

    Fine addition to WW1 literature
A poignant portrait of the lives of the gallant young lads (many of them far too young) who went to fight - and die - in the trenches of the Somme. Makepeace vividly evokes the English towns and villages they came from and the families they tore themselves away from. We are reminded that this was a world where the rich got richer and the poor always knew their place - and the battlefield shredded all of them. A fine addition to the literature of World War One.

    Critic Reviews:
"As swashbuckling as a young Eroll Flynn, languidly escaping death with the ease of a teenage James Bond, this is a roaring adventure....the finest series of historical novels since O'Brien." (The Good Book Guide)
"Brilliantly combines meticulous research with a breakneck pace and a terrific sense of humour." (Historical Novels Review)

    A really enjoyable listen
I really enjoyed this book - It has a great combination of character, history, action and humour with a bit of love and lust thrown in for good measure. There is a good story which moves along at a pace that keeps your interested, as opposed to other books I have read that pummel you with historical trivia, seemingly aimed at satisfying historians that the author has done a good job of his or her research. I don't know enough about the period to say whether it is historically accurate, but I have read other reviews that the author is on a par with Patrick O'Brien and George MacDonald Fraser, which is good enough for me! I finished listening to "The Blooding" definitely interested in reading or listening to its sequels, to experience more of Jack Absolutes adventures. A highly recommended listen.
    Very entertaining, vivid plot, colourful.
A cleverly plotted book with some great moments and interesting characters. Well worth getting. Highly recommended.

Disregard the price tag, use a credit
I'm not quite sure why this book is so expensive, but it is definitely worth a credit. It's beautifully written with an old-school narrative. The writer uses beautiful language and imagery to convey a story of survival and isolation in the most remote part of the world. Battling the elements and his own hallucinations, the story of Thomas Cave is a triumphant tale. The thing I liked the most was that he agreed to spend winter in the Arctic freeze over a bet. That was a nice touch. His daily routine and survival methods are fascinating. I also learned a lot about the whaling industry of old. This book is really well written, and the narrator's accent is an asset to the performance. Perfect to read on a rainy day with a hot cup of coffee.

    great book
    Author: Margaret Dickinson
    Title: Twisted Strands
Genre: Contemporary Fiction, Family Sagas, Historical Romance, Historical Fiction,
I was given this book along with tangled threads.
Book Dedication: With great affection and deep admiration this book is dedicated to my uncle, Brian Copley, who enlisted in 1914 at the age of sixteen in the 8th battalion sherwood foresters, (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire regiment) and served throughout the war.
Thankfully, he survived the trenches to life a long and happy life and it has been a privilege to share his memories and experiences through his personal diaries of the time.
This book has 400 pages and 62 chapters in it.
I would tell people that you should step outside your comfort zone with books because it is good to add more authors and genres to your reading portfolio. Even if you do not read books like this.
I normally read books of this genre but l also stepped outside my comfort zone with authors and genres l am so glad l did because l have read so many great books and come across some great authors.
I highly recommend this book but l would tell people to read tangled threads first so you know the full story not just half.
Synopsis: It is 1914 and Eveleen Hardcastle, now in her early thirties, has married Richard. Her longing for children is the only shadow over the happiness, but the world war breaks out, Eveleen is left to manage the Notttingham Factory alone while Richard goes to fight for his country. Eveleen's mother, Mary, has found happiness at last in her marriage to Josh. Her granddaughter, Birdie, still lives at home and has a spirited, strong will which her grandmother finds hard to control. When Andrew, the love of her life, also enlists, Birdie finds consolation in a rewarding vocation. Nursing wounded soldiers sent home from the front, she gains a maturity beyond her years. But every day the casualty list from the hell of the trenches grows longer. Bridie nurses her grandfather on his death bed as her boyfriend is fighting the war, she became a nurse to help people and keeps in touch with her auntie Eveleen who husband is also fighting in the war and she loves her family.
Review: I found this really easy to get in to and hard to put down once l started reading it I was happy to be reading the follow on to tangled threads. I am glad that Eveleen moved on and got married. I was happy to read that Eveleen's mother found someone who loves her after her husband's tragic death and she is still raising her granddaughter.

    Another GREAT Read!!!
As usual, Margaret Dickinson is always over-the-top good and never a disappointment in any way. I love everything I have ever read by her and find that her books are impossible to put down once I get started. I cannot imagine anyone who wouldn't enjoy reading her because of her knack for making the story and the people so very real -- to the point that you feel as though you are right in the story with them. Absolutely loved this book! Dickinson "knocked it out of the park" yet again!
    Five Stars
    Very good book
    The miller's daughter
The miller was a vastly important person in the community at one time, as all the farmers had to bring their grain to him. This book looks at the family life of the millers and how they coped with a massive engineering project in the garden, mending and patching, fearing storms which damaged sails.
The daughter in the story marries away from this environment - I thought she asked far too few questions of her husband like where did he keep going to on business and what sort of business was it. By the time she returns, sadder and wiser, with her own children, the mill has been overtaken by modern machinery and there seems little point in repairing the storm damage.
Which brings us to the modern day and the question of what do you do with a windmill? A good solution is found. This is an enjoyable look at countryside life and a way of life now lost.
