Off to a Good Start!
Benjamin Pressner Gothardâs first book, CEO at 20, is a quick, inspiring, and informative read by a young man who is already well established in his entrepreneurial role.
Aimed at the new entrepreneur, the advice is helpful for all who undertake the perilous journey of starting a company, where, Iâve read 90% fail after 5 years. I consumed it in an hour, at a time when I was considering how much I wanted to endure and invest to grow the little company I run.
Ben Gothard (presumably pronounced, âGoth-ardâ) reminds us that Col. Sanders worked from age 40 to 62 before his Kentucky Fried Chicken became a success. You have to do the work, pay your dues, at any age.
The author covers the following elements as essential:
START: Benâs father reminded him that you canât cross the finish line without first crossing the starting line. I recall that multi-millionaire businessman Clement Stone urged, âDo it now.â You know what âitâ is; get underway!
PLAN: Know your goal, where you want to go, and then make a plan, a mental map, telling you how to get there.
DREAM: Know what you really want. Ben Gothard describes Walt Disneyâs success, having created a company now at $45 billion/year in revenue and 175,000 employees. Disney quipped, I read, âTo think, it all started with a mouse.â
PASSION: With a dream should come passion, passion to carry you and your team through the rough patches.
WORK ETHIC: âWork is love made real,â I like to say, and with a love of what you are building, you will have to do the work. Mark Cuban is quoted as noting that the amount of work you do to achieve your goal is one of the few areas you control yourself.
MINDSET: You need conviction and confidence and an attitude that seeks growth of ability rather than assuming that one has already all the ability one needs. Gothard cites the phenomenal swimmer Michael Phelps, who achieved an unprecedented 18 Olympic gold medals with his talent and his devotion to continual improvement. The author tells us not to set a limit on our goals, but to âdrive as far as we can.â
FINANCE: Some businesses can be started on the cheap, but most need financing. B.G. gives some details on Internet sites useful for peer-to-peer support: Kickstarter, GoFundMe, and Prosper.
GUIDANCE: Until you have done it, you donât really know the difficulties and the ways of overcoming them. Mentors of various types (he cites an Ohio State University study here) can provide encouragement and insight. A site he cites: FindAMentor.com.
The book finishes with brief, inspirational biographies of film-maker Martin Villeneuve, explorer Roald Amundsen, and Benjamin Gothardâs up-from-poverty grandfather, Judge Sol Gothard.
A few words about the mechanics of CEO at 20: The title is pithy and intriguing, with an explanatory subtitle.
