Lyrical, beautiful, stunning

I loved this book, even though it is not the type of thing I normally read -- very emotional, told from a child's point of view in the beginning. The writing was so good and the setting of the commune seemed so true and the emotions so appealing -- I'm drawn to stories about the 60s and hippie outposts and, like another reviewer, I remember the quirky names and the hippie language. You can be cynical about it now, but it was a very charmed time (and did extend into the 80s in some places, and even beyond). The book captures the charm and the quirkiness and the depth of emotion and does so without manipulating the reader into following a twisty plot. It's all very real-seeming and human and honest and very readable and beautiful as well. If the ending of the book was not as appealing as the beginning, it was good in its own way and, it did not ruin the effect for me. I looked at the adult Bit as the product of that incredible childhood and complicated relationship with his mother, a relationship that the author depicted well. What we see of each other is only the tip of the iceberg. Beautiful book! Highly recommended!

Gimme Shelter

OK, let me start by saying I grew up in the 60's and came of age in the mid 70's. I had friends who joined communes, and despite never having joined one I lived the life for a few years of a young man looking for meaning in alternative culture - no meat, folk music, living close the land, putting faith in growing yourown and rejecting most of main stream culture's values. That in and of itself doesn't make me all that unique, but as we get further and further from that time I look back and still wonder what happened? What happened to the idealism? Why did it fall apart? What happened to all the believers? Lauren Groff's Arcadia looks at all these questions through the eyes of her main character, Bit Stone. Arcadia has become one of my favorite books that I've read in a long time. The book isn't perfect, there are a few flaws and it lags in a few places, but it's kind of like life. The kind of book where I couldn't wait to get back to it, where I just sat and pondered after finishing it, where I could drop into it and just get lost. She captures the time, the idealism, the disillusionment, the drugs, the free love, the naivete, the hope and so much more. I read Groff's Fate and Furies and loved it's look at marriage and all it's shadows and sunlight and little lies and deceptions, but this book is phenomenal. She does an amazing job of narrating the protangonist's thoughts as he goes from birth, to child, to adolescent to adult to middle age. It captures all of the emotions and experiences of each of those ages - dream state, innocence, confusion, depression, grace, wonder, imagination, curiosity, elation, belief, loss, love, longing, joy, profound sadness and everything in between. I give great thanks to Lauren Groff for having written this book.

The main character is just so unpleasant that I didn't want to spend any more time with him.

I skipped to the end and to not much surprise found a pointless ending.

A great "Modern British Novel"

A big family saga with a number of difficult themes, mostly revolving around love, family bonds and, above all, betrayal. Set in 2012 London (with a few excursions to Tanzania, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Hampshire, Dorset, etc), this is a great Modern British Novel if such a "genre" exists. Complex and interestingly flawed characters who often make terrible decisions and act out of selfishness disguised as goodness of their hearts in combination with a decent plot made this a truly enjoyable novel for me.

John Lee, who narrates the audio book, is absolutely outstanding. This was the first book read by him that I've listened to, and I can now appreciate why he is so acclaimed. His vast array of authentic sounding accents is impressive, my only complaint is that he often changes his voice when he reads women and sounds a bit like a demented transvestite, but that is a personal observation, I am sure others don't perceive it that way.

I'm definitely keen to read something else by James Meek - he ticks many boxes for me in terms of his writing.

Smart and original

It is very hard to describe this book. Initially it is a tale of a high achieving brother and sister who get along despite an undercurrent of sibling rivalry. Richie is a cheating hedonist who is about to be found out whereas Becks is an almost saintly medical researcher looking for a cure for malaria. Both characters are intensely real and it is impossible to completely like or dislike either of them. The catalyst occurs when Becks breaks her engagement to Val, a high powered newspaper editor and he unleashes a very effective revenge strategy that has far reaching consequences for Becks, her family and even their acquaintances.

Just like life, this book has its annoying moments and some sections are a tad overlong. I also regretted the absence of the very charismatic Val in much of the book, although his actions are plainly evident. Just like life, I can only look back fondly on this remarkable and original story.

Elouise because she is witty, interesting and companionable.

This is not a chick lit, although you put it in that category. This book reminds me of some of Joanna Trollope's books. The complexity of the characters, the wit and unexpected plot twists are superb. As satisfying a read as a really delicious dinner out. The dialogue is perfect and I like the range of ages in the characters.

Moves from mind numbingly dull detail and then adds lots of bigger sub plots all in one go.

This is my first read of Adele Parks. I immediately fall in love with the book. In the story no one is perfect (especially Eloise) , however, everyone tries take whatever it takes to get what they want. I like the title, it's not only about Eloise's friend who tries to have a kid, but EVERYONE.

An exquisite book

This book--small press, too original for a lot of readers and editors, I guess--nonetheless won a Whiting Award, and Entertainment Weekly called it "criminally underrated." I read it with a sense of awe that renewed on every page. It depicts our world but also tells parts of the story from the points of view of the dead and the unborn. It seemed real and sad and yet made me believe in another layer of reality--a collective consciousness which is greater and wiser than any individual consciousness. And the prose is beautifully hypnotic. Really, it made me want to believe in the human race--in its essential goodness, despite petty and personal distractions and foibles.

It took me on a journey

Not often these days do I have the opportunity to read a book with such luscious prose! An amazing feat of story telling and writing that rings true. I felt like I knew the characters from my own life.

Hard to summarize

I listened to this book twice before I understood who was doing what to whom. I'm so glad I gave it second chance because it's an awesome piece of fiction.

The lioness and the fawn may have feelings for each other but in the end, each much submit to its nature -- so, too, with people.

This is one of those books that starts in the middle and cryptically works its way out with clues to the story. With half hints thrown at you in no consecutive order, the reader is totally lost and clueless till near the end..... making for a LLOONNG 4 hours of listening.

I think it was kinda dishonest. Had I known what the protagonist was - me along with probably MOST AMERICANS, would not be interested in reading this book. Was I supposed to feel kinship or understanding with the prtagonist?

Only thing that kept me reading was the money I spent buying it. At the end - I wish I would have stopped listening much earlier.

You need a playlist

A confusing page turner. I stayed engaged partly because of good writing and partly because I was trying to sort who a doing what as the author jumped back and forth in time.

what a mix

The mixture of the two stories which started so far apart and gradually blended into one and then morphed into a story that could be going on still was electrifying. I started knowing nothing about piracy, slavery or 19th century murder, now this book has had me walking the Ratcliffe highway and preparing lessons for 12 year olds` on piracy, the slave trade and poverty on the Thames. fascinating and rich, like an old brocade uniform hidden in an oak chest.

Our murky 'past'

It is difficult to emphasise how truly great this book is. The author has managed to pull together a detailed and honest history of England spanning centuries but also to include real life characters in a fantastical tale of corruption and horror. The story is about the notorious Ratcliffe Highway Murders. The characters he brings into the tale are people who really did exist at the time. It is very similar in tone to the brilliant 'Dan Leno and The Limehouse Golem' although I should emphase that 'The English Monster' is a very original work in its own right.

I would like to say a word about the East London setting. As a very young Northern jobseeker, I lived a stone's throw from the Highway in the late 70's. At first I was disappointed not to be living in the glamorous London I always envisaged but very quickly I grew to appreciate the strange character of the area. My neighbours were ex merchant seaman stranded without a ship and living in flats stuffed full of odd and sometimes frightening objects from around the world. I could walk around the last vestiges of the old London Docks before they were heavily developed into a mini New York. All the time I felt I was living somewhere that was not only old but actually ancient and still alive. Wapping still smelled of spices although the old warehouses were being turned into art galleries for the enlightened middle classes. There was not yet any sign of the new News International monster that was about to be erected, but plenty of evidence of the old slave trade and the existing sweatshops churning out clothing manufactured by poor exploited Bengali immigrants forced to work in lethal fire traps.

I lived on a street where one of Jack the Ripper's victims met her ghastly end. It was grim watching the tourists poking but I can never pretend I didn't share their fascination. This books brilliantly captures the murkiness of this area and the fact we remain on a continuous cycle of being prepared to do almost anything and overlook any inconvenient truths in order to achieve our own desires.

The English Monster is a fantastic creation but as you find out in the epilogue, much of it is true.

Give it time

A bit of a funny book this one.

A fantastic read

A friend told me about this book and I started to read it, once I had begun I couldn't stop. The narrator read it perfectly and the author brought her characters to life brilliantly. I would be very interested to read more books by her.

Beautifully crafted read

This is a beautifully written story about a couple who leave A baby with an elderly widow. Twist to the story is that the couple have disabilities and are attempting to flee the home they were putt in. They unraveling story is sensitively written portraying the lives of individuals involved. This is not at all patronizing or cringe worthy, rather it is written with someone who really understands people with disabilities and those around them. It is brilliantly expressively read by Kate Reading.

Somewhat Lacking

The Publishers Summery managed to made this novel sound like an intriguing thriller and would make me want to keep listening and I was under the impression that we would mostly follow the life of the baby and maybe discover how she came about, under these odd circumstances.

Sadly, I have been struggling to listen to this book while on my train commute to London. I keep finding that I will drift off and then have to rewind, only to find I haven't missed anything of great importance.

While I haven't yet finished the book, I am a chapter or so into the second part and I'm still not really enjoying it. I feel that this book could have been more, but it is slow paced and just a little bit dull.

It's was a love story like most of Danielle Steele books. I could see that in the middle of the story it was going to have a happy ending. You could figure out that the fathers love for his daugther would end up giving her the hotel, cause she was his whole life before he got married. I would suggest this as a summer reading novel by the beach. I have read more interesting books from Danielle Steele that could not put the book down. One book was malice and another wanderlust. Loved those books. Have all her novels.

Good Quick Read

Danielle Steel is one of my favorite authors. I have been a fan of hers and read many of her novels over the last 20 years. Suffice it to say, I am hooked. Many of my favorite books are written by her.

I recently finished her book, Friends Forever. Unfortunately, much of this current book did not engage me.

The story was about five friends who met in kindergarten and become immediate friends through their childhood, teen and college years. They dubbed themselves the Big 5, and became inseparable. The cast of characters included them, their parents, stepparents, and siblings.

What I did not enjoy about this book was the pacing. The book moved too fast, rapidly changing from scene to scene. It was quickly flipping back and forth through the characters through time as they advanced from kindergarten to college.

Much of the first half of the book was about the parents of the Big 5. This, in my opinion, made it very hard to get any true character development with many of the characters until the last 1/3 of the book. By this time, the story had quickly trimmed the cast down by moving rapidly through drug overdoses, suicide, and an accidental death, and funerals.

The overall message was about the risky lifeâs choices of this particular generation. The events in the story did affect the lives of the characters. Unfortunately, due to its fast pace, the reader did not have time to feel it. This book couldâve been so much more. And has a great story lineâWho didnât have the âBest Friendsâ in school.

I enjoyed the last third of the book when we finally were left with one main character and her struggles. The book slowed down enough to look inside a couple of the characterâs motives, feelings, and decisions that they faced.

As typically Danielle Steel novels go, it was an easy read. It had an ending that left you feeling good. Unfortunately, it did not capture my heart as some of her previous novels did.
