    Publisher's Summary:
From one of the U.K.s most dazzling novelists - whom Richard Ford has called a profound writer - comes this daring new novel set in the unsteady, self-contained world of a luxury liner.
While on a transatlantic trip with her soon-to-be-fiancé Derek, Elizabeth unexpectedly runs into ex-lover Arthur, with whom she shares a shady past: the pair once worked as traveling spiritual mediums who conned the vulnerable by pretending to contact the spirits of departed loved ones. While Derek remains seasick and cabin-bound, Elizabeth wanders the ship, alternately avoiding and seeking out Arthur. Unable to avoid memories of their fractured past, she must face the deception they practiced even as she accepts the peace they brought to the grief-stricken who sought their services. Intimately addressed to you, the listener, The Blue Book is both a portrait of two methodical con artists and a meditation on how love is a private language, a set of codes, to which the outside world ought not admit impediment (Telegraph). Irresistibly written, by turns comically wry and stunningly lyrical, with some of the most unashamedly erotic writing since Nicholson Baker first contemplated a telephone receiver (New Statesman), the book slowly, deliberately, and devastatingly reveals itself to the listener. The heartbreaking stakes are ultimately nothing less than fact and fiction, life and death.

    Just never engaged me
Full disclosure: I'm mostly a non-fiction reader/listener. When I do consume fiction, it's usually mysteries and detective stuff. But lately I've been ripping through--and really enjoying-- a lot of contemporary fiction.
So when this came up on the new fiction list I gave it a chance. It held my attention for a while--the writing is excellent--poetic and evocative--and for a while the plot kept me going. Or more the lack of plot--as in, trying to figure out what the deal was with the characters and what their connection was. Once that mystery was solved, the narration just got too bogged down with inner dialogue--brilliantly insightful stuff to be sure, but still--too meandering and fragmented to hold my attention.
Maybe I'll pick this back up someday, but not anytime soon.

    Publisher's Summary:
What sort of betrayal would drive a brother and sister apart? When Grace and her brother Andrew inherit their grandmother's house, they surprise few people by deciding to move in together. But they've always got on well and the London house is large enough to split down the middle. There's just one thing they've not taken into account though: what if one of them wants to bring a lover to the house?
When Andrew's partner, James, moves in, and immediately picks a fight about the treatment of gay men, the balance is altered - with almost fatal consequences.
The Child's Child is both an intriguing examination of betrayal in families, and a taut, thrilling listen.

    Somehow lacking
This book is partially set in a similar period to "A Dark Adapted Eye", but is not nearly as good. The book combines two stories, one set in modern day, which is the superior story, and the other set in the pre and post- second world war England. One is supposed to compare and contrast the reaction of society to illegitimate children and to gay people in the two different time periods. This is a very good idea, but ultimately, the characters from the past are totally unlikeable and one finds oneself longing for the return to the present day setting and characters.
I would only recommend this for loyal fans of Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine. I would strongly suggest "A Dark Adapted Eye" if you want to buy something from her.
    Disjointed and disappointing
I've read a lot of Barbara Vine, and listened to quite a few. One or two have been disappointing but Asta's Book and The Dark-Adapted Eye are superb, so I was really looking forward to this listen. However, it was very disappointing. About half the book is taken up with a 'book within a book' which was OK. There were parallels between the modern day situation and that in the 'book within', but nothing startling - no 'Aha' moment. There were also hints at the beginning of the story that there was going to be more to it. There is reference to a 'ghost'; and one of the characters has a disproportionate reaction to a situation that made one think 'Oooh what is he hiding?' The answer appears to be nothing. I was left checking my library for part 3 in which the strands which have been developed are pulled together - but there is no part 3. A very disappointing listen.
Not at the top of her game
Although I enjoyed this, there is nothing like the quality, in terms of a cohesive and satisfying story, as the previous works under the Barbara Vine name, such as in the brilliant Asta's book, No Night is too Long, the Blood Doctor and so many others. I kept hoping for the threads of the story to decisively pull together, but they didn't seem to do this for me. The themes were there, the book had characters and things to say but it didn't have those moments of realisation and resolution.
    Very disappointed
I was very disappointed by this book. I've read or listened to all the Barbara Vine books and loved them. The story within a story of this book really didn't work for me and I couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters. They were all so unsympathetic.
The narrator did a good job, but I struggled to get to the end of this one.
    A thought provoking book
Read well, made it a joy to listen to.

    The worst Australian accent ever
Would you try another book from Cathy Kelly and/or Amy Creighton?
I always enjoy a Cathy Kelly novel. Reliably enjoyable and the story always finishes happily ever after.
    Any additional comments?
I nearly stopped listening about 2 hours in , the Australian accent was so so bad. Something crossed between Cornish and I don't know what bla!
    Perfect Holiday Reading
I love Cathy Kelly`s books and Amy Creighton is a fabulous narrator who get the accents and intonation so right.
This is a sensitive plot and I enjoyed its poignancy a soft gentle story with sensitive issues so skilfully written
    Gentle but quite slow moving
If this book were a film would you go see it?
No - I am almost blind so I can't see.
    Any additional comments?
This was a nice story but a bit slow moving for my liking.
    Heartwarming
Cathy Kelly never disappoints and Amy Creighton was the perfect narrator for this gentle tale in which love and friendship helps overcome adversity.
There are multiple characters whose lives converge as the book progresses. I found the characters both likeable & believable and each of the storylines equally engrossing. Some threads were tied up just a bit too neatly really but the book as a whole was heartwarming and most enjoyable.
too many characters to keep up with
    Any additional comments?
at the beginning I thought this was going to be a really good story but was disappointed. I gave up after chapter four.

    Fantastic, underrated YA series
Virals is easily my favourite YA series happening right now.
It is a real shame not many seem to be reading it and I think it might be because of its frequent mischaracterisation. Virals, Code included, is a Teen/YA series. The main protagonists are a group of smart, strong and inquisitive teens who were accidentally infected with a virus coding canine DNA making them essentially a human wolf pack.
Despite this supernatural leaning, Virals couldnt be more grounded in the real world and while the kids are on a mission to find out what exactly happened to them, the viral issue takes a back seat in each of the books to the mystery at hand.
Borrowing on Reichs extensive research knowledge from the Bones series (sometimes directly as main character Tori Brennan is Temperances great-niece) Reichs has crafted fun mysteries, treasure hunts and conspiracies for the team to pursue. Their viral abilities give them an edge, on par with their natural curiosity and intelligence.
Meanwhile, they deal with the more usual pitfalls of adolescence such as being smart scholarship students at an exclusive private academy by day. Fortunately the teen stuff (including some budding romance finally starting to bloom in this entry) is handled deftly and kept minimal that you actually look forward to it as an interlude between adventures.
Code sees the virals drawn into a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a mysterious bomb maker threatening lives in their home town of Charleston, SC. As usual the team has to use fascinating local history and landmarks ( a real highlight of all the Virals books), solve puzzles and clues as well as exploit their access to their parents state of the art environmental research facility (covertly of course).
Overall, Code is another fun and exciting Virals book. Kathy has shared the writing with her son Brandan and the story, style, tone and voices didnt miss a beat. Ill be happy to see more Virals novels penned by Brendan (especially if they come along a little faster now!)
Overall, I highly recommend Code and the whole Virals series to any YA reader. Fans of adventure, incredible locations and puzzles/mystery will certainly not be disappointed. Fans of a well written work will also not be disappointed because Reichs skill and experienced writer just seems to make every element come together.
    Code.
A really brilliant story. Number 3 i think , in a fabulous series called VIRALS. I came across this series by accident, loving Kathy Reichs books. I'm glad that I did.
    excellent
This book does not disappoint in any way. Definite birthday present for my 11 year old but I like her to read so I will be buying a hard copy of this and Virals.

Broadway actor and award-winning voice talent Fred Berman gives a brilliant and nuanced performance of American author Len Levinsons Beginners Luck, the first audiobook in the rip-roaring Pecos Kid series. In this crackling yarn, 17-year-old naïf Duane Braddock leaves the monastery where he was raised to seize his first taste of the whiskey and the women of the Wild West.
    Five Stars
Love it! Excellent book. Author has a way of telling this story that makes you read until the end.

    Old Fashioned Romance
Old Fashioned in that the hero is a big, strong and a bit of a bully, almost sexually assaulting the heroine. Seems like this passed for romance a while back. If you like stories with a very strong, dominate male lead and a weaker female, this one is for you. If you can't figure out why the heroine falls in love with a man who is trying to intimidate her (and mostly succeeds) take a pass. There isn't much of the hero's actions which really indicate that he is falling in love with the heroine, just some words in the last chapter or two but even then, his actions seem to say otherwise.
    1980 copyright
I read the description of the book and saw the 2012 publication date.
In the book it states that the copyright is from 1980. I have two rules when buying a romance book - none published before the late 1990's and none written in first person. The second rule I will break if the story sounds very good, the first one I won't break unless deceived like I feel like I was here.
The dialogue is cringeworthy. Partial spoiler: the "hero" gets the bikini top of the heroine and tells her she can run away but any man finding her in such a state would unlikely be able to restrain himself, because he is barely able to restrain himself. I almost stopped reading there, but continued to the bitter, highly predictable end.
I can't recommend this to anyone, and if I hadn't got it back in April I would have returned this.
    Didn't like it
Didn't like how the story developed. The author didn't give the characters enough common sense. I keep thinking - How dumb are you, anyway.
    captive
I read where one person was upset because this was written in 1980... Soooo? It doesn't take from the story it is still a good read. Most of these books are older the reason it says 2012 or 2013 is because that's when it was made for e-books. No deceit, just facts. I myself enjoyed the story, it kept me involved and honestly I had no idea until close to the end. Do I recommend this book, yes I do,it was refreshing.
    Good book
I was pleasantly surprised by this little romance. Cute story, loved the feisty h, and no sex scenes :)))) Happy, happy, happy! Hard to find clean romances these days. There was still plenty of sparks between our hero and heroine but the most they did was kiss. Although I was worried a time or two but the author did keep it in the sweet category. Well written, a few small editing errors but hardly noticeable-not even enough to deter the flow of the book and not too short or drawn out-read in one evening. Hope this helps.

I fell in love with Susan Palwick's writing when I stumbled across a reprint of her story The Fate of Mice. Her other short fiction did not disappoint. Now I know her novels are fantastic, too. This was intense and riveting.
    Dissociation
Flying in Place is the only, only , only book I've ever read which accurately describes what dissociation looks and feels like.
And it's her first novel! Palwick's a genius!
    Poignant, Uplifting Story
This book was recommended by my therapist. It is a deeply touching, well-written story that is easy to read and provides insight into the deepest thoughts of the main character, Emma, a victim of incest, and how she deals with and untimately overcomes her abuse. I look forward to reading other books by this author.
    Haunting
I couldn't put this book down. If incest makes you nervous don't read it but it was so intriguing. I read it in one afternoon.
    Amazing book!
This is a very well written, good book. It really teaches about the emotional and psychological damage sexual abuse can cause. It helped me write a paper about suffering. I recommend that everyone read this sometime in their life.
