Lost in a Sea of Symbolic Characters

The premise of this book is excellent; a Christian, Jew and Muslim play poker for twelve years to determine who gains control over Jerusalem. Where the plot lost me was the digressions into the extended metaphorical references to various historical villains whom have vied for control over the Middle East, but failed miserably. Perhaps it is the writer's former CIA cynicism rearing its head when he falls back on prurient cliche' to make his point that the French are inept theives (and pederasts), the Arabs are ignorant sodomites, and the Jews are clever business hands who take control of the world's riches by guile and ruthlessness. This is all silly type casting for an audience of former spooks and expatriates who drink Johnny Walker Red Label in smokey Third World bars under false identification papers that identify them as trade representatives (when you know that they all work for the "Company").

The author presents long digressions into the mundane minutia regarding the lives of minor characters only to tell us (after 30 minutes) that some tangential relation to the minor character is, in fact, a major player in the plot. Except, after falling asleep during the digression we no longer care about the tangential and irrelevant connections the author attempts to make to the overall story.

This could have been great literature with some decent editing. Alas, the author died at the height of his writing career before anyone took him serious enough to say, "Hey Edward, you need to say more by saying less."

I've tried but just cannot listen to this one

When Parents Push Too Hard

I enjoyed this book even though it was frightening since I'm the parent of a teen and a pre-teen. Reading about Leah, the "perfect child", falling off track was very believable and seemed to be the result of her parents pushing her too hard with their own agendas without listening to her. As parents, we want the best for our kids and often try to hard to help our children achieve to the best of their ability. Leah's father pushed her too hard with soccer and getting into the only college he felt was good enough and that really bothered me, this father trying to live his life through his daughter. Leah had way too much pressure placed on her to be the perfect daughter - to be the best soccer player, to earn her scholarship and the only thing good enough would be to get that scholarship for Harvard. Ultimately though, Leah was responsible for her own behavior. It's really no wonder Leah rebelled the way she did, although it's a shame she ended up destroying even the things that were important to her in the process.

It was difficult to read the parts when Leah actually tried to approach her mother without directly telling her what was wrong and her mother would put her off because she was busy. It strikes fear into my heart because I wonder if that has ever happened with my children. I always want to be available to them, but I get busy and don't always give them my full attention when they might need it. Unfortunately, kids often hint rather than directly ask for what they need and parents can't read their minds or know when we really need to listen.

This was an excellent book, but also a hard book to read because it is every parent's nightmare.

Great family drama

Do you ever leave a book on your Kindle or shelf for a while because you're not sure if you'll like it? I've done that several times, and every single time, I wish I hadn't. Last year, In Leah's Wake was offered for free one day, and after seeing it all over the blogosphere and Twitter for months, I thought I'd see what the fuss was about. But I'd heard it was sad, so I kept putting it off. I really have to stop doing that.

It was gritty and certainly not a fairy tale, but I didn't cry. I wish I hadn't waited so long to read it. It was so easy to empathize with the characters, while simultaneously wanting to throw something at them.

This prequel depicts three men, WWII "warriors" who, making sense of their lives after the war, enter the industry as a fisherman, seafood buyer, and cannery executive. This is historical fiction. The author actually participated in some of the story. The time is post WWII. A Japanese warrior named Kiyoshi Tsurifune goes home in disgrace because he didn't die for the emperor. He returns to a small village where he and his father had owned a fishing company. Jones Henry a Marine vet returns to Ketchikan Alaska where his father owns a fishing boat. He meets a relative of a Swedish neighbor who also owns a fishing boat. His name is Swede Scorden. Swede is a veteran from the European war where he fought in the underground against Germans. Swede gets a chance to work in the management at the local fish cannery. All three men's lives intertwine and ultimately end in The Aleutian Islands off of Alaska. Japanese are wanting to fish once again in these waters where they have been banned since the war. Another beautiful story from Mark Pothier

'My first thought, which originally occurred to me on the plane trip home from San Francisco, was that we have become what we always were.' Mark Pothier's new story witnesses that becoming, with all its inevitable and unforeseen aspects, in a series of letters between two men attempting to come to terms with the deterioration of their long friendship.

In both The Man Who Owns Little and his previous story, The First Light of Evening, Mark Pothier articulates with precision and sympathy how people reach out to one another and wall themselves off at the same time. His story deftly limns the passage of time, the yearning for connection, the breaking and tentative reconstruction of the spirit, and the need to understand, reveal, and justify our lives. It does so by way of the simplest of details: a 'busted guitar,' a 'bucket of chicken.' It does so by way of his characters' unique voices. It does so by way of its elegant structure, circling back on itself in such a way that upon finishing you turn immediately back to its beginning, and read it again with deeper understanding. It calls to mind T.S. Eliot's line about exploring the world and our lives within it, that its purpose, its 'end...will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.'

I can't wait to see his forthcoming novel.

Very good read

I read the first of Mark Pothier's stories 2 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, so as I browsed through Amazon for something to read during Christmas "break", I was excited to discover two new offerings from him - "The Man Who Owns Little" and "What will you Miss Most". I eagerly downloaded both and spent the rest of the day devouring them. Although I liked the latter story much more, both stories were very rewarding and have stayed with me over the past week. I plan to re-read both of them and look forward to more stories from Mr Pothier.

Perhaps the most moving book I have ever read!

While those who said that they found this story a little confusing in the beginning, I suggest readingNext of Kin: My Conversations with Chimpanzeesby Roger Fouts. (A true story that tells the dramatic story of Fouts's magical 30 year relationship with Washoe, whom we watch grow from a mischievous baby chimp fresh out of the NASA space program into the matriarch of a clan of chimpanzees who fill the pages with tales of what it is like to live and converse (in American Sign Language) with these intelligent, sensitive, sentient creatures. Read it!) Reading "Next Of Kin" connects all the dots and answers all the question one might have.

"A Beautiful Truth" has moved me to tears almost nightly. At times I foresee what is going to happen and I have to stop dead and prepare myself to read on. Sometimes I am correct and sometimes the story leads me to places I never thought I would go. I have Post-It tabs on numerous pages because the prose is so beautiful and I need to go back to reread and savor one more time.

This book puts you directly inside what it is like to be a chimpanzee and teaches us all, without question, that chimpanzees are Wild Animals -- not pets, not human even though we share 98.7% of their DNA, and they are NOT uncaring and unfeeling test subjects to be tortured in national and private laboratories.

"A Beautiful Truth" forces us to confront why we humans believe we are the only creatures who think, feel, hold memories and have deeply felt emotions. It teaches us that if we are so naive to think these thoughts we are so very wrong. Looee and Mr. Ghoul are real persons, just like me and you. Looee and Mr. Ghoul will live with me forever.

An emotional goodbye

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, absolutely. I love Maeve Binchy's novels and short stories. I hadn't read any of her journalistic work, but it was like a collection of her short stories. They were funny, sad and heartwarming. After listening to my collection repeatedly over the years, I feel like I know Kate Binchy. She is a wonderful voice for her cousin's writing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Maeve's Times?

I loved hearing about Maeve and Gordon's cameo appearance in one of the films. They were so excited so I was too! And I must remember SINBAD to tell my sister.

Familiarity of her voice and the way she brings the characters to life.

Laugh and cry... I feel very sad to have finished it, knowing that there won't be anymore.

I've read all Maeve Binchys novels but not her newspaper articles so I wasn't sure what to expect from this book.

Well, it was delightful. Funny, warm, interesting and the narration was spot on.

A great book to dip in and out of or listen to all in one go.

Loved it. Interesting to hear something different. Don't always agree with Maeve's point of view but liked her style. Great narration from Kate Binchy as usual.

Haunting and Brilliant

I almost didn't want to finish this book, because I didn't want to let happen what I knew was going to happen -- I cared that much about Jonathon. The passages are sometimes very funny and sometimes terribly sad, and sometimes both at the same time. I breezed through this novel, but the words, images, feelings and people in it have attached themselves to my brain and they walk around with me everywhere I go. The author does an incredible job, giving us just enough glimpses and fragments of Jonathon's life, asking us to stitch those together into a deeper, richer understanding of that life, than if the author laid it all out for us. Almost reminds me of a Seurat painting. I only wish Jonathon could have read this book, because then things might have turned out differently.

I read this in a cabin overlooking the ocean in Northern California. It was very enjoyable to read and provided a sensitive insight into the thoughts of a suicidal individual in a unique manner of presentation: letters to all he knew.

Funny and Sad

There's so much pain to this story about a man who committed suicide. Told through a series of short letters he wrote (but never sent) to every member of his family, his teachers, ex-girlfriends, even the Easter Bunny, the novel tracks his whole life from tragic beginning to tragic end. In between there is humor, sadness, and a struggle to survive. I tore through this book in matter of days.

Wish it had been a little longer or had a little more depth. It was interesting to start the beginning of the book knowing the outcome and thinking of comments made from that perspective instead of finding out at the end

Dear Everybody" is first-rating story telling.

Michael Kimball's third book, "Dear Everybody," will kick you hard in the ass! It's about a disturbed weatherman, Jonathon Bender, age 32, who kills himself. I think the jolts in it come from the fact that you can't help but identify with his mental decline. Albert Camus, the author of "The Myth of Sisyphus," and one of Algeria's finest sons, said: "There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide."

The literary device the author uses to tell this tragic and sometimes funny tale of Jonathon's "short life," works.

The first of five intriguing books

What does Alex Jennings bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

Alex Jennings brings his intelligence and considerable vocal skills to this darkly comic portrayal of a monstrous father who detonates his innocent young son's childhood. His use of tones to play the many and varied roles, from gender to gender and from toddler to demented old lady, he nails them all. Riveting.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There is a crisis which I won't describe here; suffice to say it brought me to tears.

Any additional comments?

The fact there are a further four to listen to is a pleasure in itself, once you start the first. I am looking forward to listening to St Aubyn's latest book too.....bliss.

What a depressing crowd of characters

Would you try another book written by Edward St Aubyn or narrated by Alex Jennings?

I would never, ever read another book by Edward St Aubyn. The upper class, shallow, valueless world he depicts is unattractive and soulless. The plot of this book is skimpy. The only redeeming aspect of this audiobook was the fantastic narration of Alex Jennings who managed to portray all the characters with individuality and flare. I loved his voice and will certainly read another book narrated by him.

Has Never Mind put you off other books in this genre?

I have no desire to read the following books in the series.

Was Never Mind worth the listening time?

I am not sure. I did finish it because I hoped for a cathartic, happy resolution to the hellhole inhabited by the characters.

If you want to be brought down and to see how the "other half' lives this is the book for you.

Uncomfortable read

I felt that this story was a pompous betrayal of snobbery at its best. It made my skin crawl reading such obvious acts of mental, physical and sexual abuse with no real storyline. Unnecessary!
