The narrator has done a splendid job of bringing each character to life with her voice. From Godavaris modesty filled tone to Sreejas innocence to the American accent of Neeraja and Vanaja, each character has been distinctively portrayed in the audio version.

The Temple is Not My Father: A Story Set in India by Rasana Atreya. Narrated/performed by Shruti Kapdi. Length 1 hours and 34 mins. Contemporary Fiction. Novella. (May contain some spoilers in the beginning of review)
This story really drew me in and I was quite taken back on the Indian traditions. Traditions that go back a 100+ years. Such a wide awaking to the non-traditional American traditions of how a family is ruled by the fathers law. What he says goes even in this modern day.
The story starts out in a village of a woman Godavari and her daughter Sreeja. How their village shuns them from participating anything from sending her daughter to school to the woman getting a job in the town. All from when her father sold her to the temple to be married to the Goddess to become a prostitute to satisfied men and their sexual appetites at a girls very young age. Her mother horrified by what her husband did leaves him to take care of her granddaughter when Godavari gets pregnant. Then behind his back made sure that the money left to her by her mother went to Godavari. All Godavari wanted was a better life for her daughter.
Then enters the story two young American-Indian girls. When they find out that this woman and her daughter is related to them. Without, the knowledge of their grandmother that they were sent to live with. Since their father felt that the American lifestyle was corrupting their young minds. They needed to learn the tradition of a proper Indian women.
They start to visit their cousin during their grandmothers prayer time. The girls in the beginning decide that the youngest one would hang out with the daughter and agreed to teach her math and English with other things.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A poignant and painfully funny novel about the New York art world by the acclaimed author of Although of Course You End up Becoming Yourself.
For two first-class years, Joan Freeley had it all: the perfect family, the best art dealer in Manhattan, and the admiration of famous friends. Her adoring husband and two handsome sons attended her first gallery show in matching khakis and blue blazers. "An Interesting Talent Makes Its Debut," declared the New York Times.
Then, as if her success were nothing more than a booking error, Joan's life got downgraded. A brutal divorce led to paintings too bitter to sell and a career stuck firmly in coach. Unable to see her suffer alone any longer, Joan's teenage son Richard leaves his father and older brother in Los Angeles and moves in to her one-bedroom apartment in SoHo. At the gallery openings where she used to be a star, Richard discovers just how much his mother's light has dimmed. She is an artist who is not showing - she might as well be invisible. To acknowledge her is to acknowledge the thin line between success and failure in a world as superficial as it is intoxicating.
Richard immediately devotes himself to returning his mother to her former glory. Everything about him - the clothes he wears, the jokes he makes, the college he attends - is calculated to boost Joan's reputation. But as the years go by and the galleries keep sending back her slides, Richard has to ask: Who wants Joan Freeley's resurrection more - him or her? And when will his own life start?

Wow, you enter an interesting world
If you could sum up The Art Fair in three words, what would they be?
    Art, new york, oedipus.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Art Fair?
Watching an artist rise and fall is difficult, but watching the ones who love her endure this is wrenching.
Which character as performed by Steven Menasche was your favorite?
The son. Actually, all the characters were really embodied by the actor. Mr. Menasche is good, real good. He never rushed any part of this book and his pacing allowed me to digest parts as they went. Now that the book is over, I want to hear more of his voice and more of this story.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Art can eat you up.
    Any additional comments?
Listen to this book. A great listen to a life that most of don't have and probably don't want.

    Another fantastic Rachel Treasure novel!!
A great story, relatable characters and a very forward thinking approach. I really enjoyed this book, and it is well read (and sung)
    Cringed Constantly..
As a real Jillaroo, I am well accustomed to working around faeces.. But does it have to be spoken about throughout the whole book?? I cringed everytime it was mentioned - which was a lot. A little over the top I thought which made this the only book of Rachael's which I actually dislike.
The voice actress was alright for the majority, apart from when she had to sing.

What do you do in your teenage years when you realize what your parents taught you wasnt enough? You must go out and find books and poetry and pop songs and bad heroes - and build yourself.
Its 1990. Johanna Morrigan, 14, has shamed herself so badly on local TV that she decides that theres no point in being Johanna anymore and reinvents herself as Dolly Wilde - fast-talking, hard-drinking Gothic hero and full-time Lady Sex Adventurer! She will save her poverty stricken Bohemian family by becoming a writer - like Jo in Little Women, or the Bröntes - but without the dying young bit.
By 16, shes smoking cigarettes, getting drunk, and working for a music paper. Shes writing pornographic letters to rock-stars, having all the kinds of sex with all the kinds of men, and eviscerating bands in reviews of 600 words or less.
But what happens when Johanna realizes shes built Dolly with a fatal flaw? Is a box full of records, a wall full of posters and a head full of paperbacks, enough to build a girl after all?
Imagine The Bell Jar - written by Rizzo from Grease. How to Build a Girl is a funny, poignant, and heartbreakingly evocative story of self-discovery and invention, as only Caitlin Moran could tell it.
    Critic Reviews:
"A hilarious yet deeply moving coming of age novel from New York Times bestselling author Caitlin Moran, "the UKs answer to Tina Fey, Chelsea Handler, and Lena Dunham all rolled into one." (Marie Claire)
    Members Reviews:
I could eat this book, it is so satisfying.
I love, love, LOVED this book! What a great surprise! It was a recommendation on my Kindle, so I thought, "Why not?" and I'm so glad I bought it! There were parts that literally made me laugh out loud... in a public place... and I didn't care. Not only do we ROOT for Dolly Wilde (what a great name... and what a great way that she came up with the name), but we equally pity her and cheer her on, while sometimes slightly cringing -- in much the way that a big sister would-- when you read about certain decisions that she makes and certain misperceptions that she creates. But you LOVE Dolly, and you are so glad that she is loved and that she owns what she is becoming... but she is very aware of what is real about her persona and what is definitely an act.
The writing is stellar, and the editing is fabulous too. I love the vocabulary, the metaphor, and the overall VIBE of this book. (If you read and appreciate either Christopher Moore or Tom Robbins, you will love this writing style.) I have recommended this book to many friends, and I may even re-read it. "How to Build a Girl" was my first taste of Caitlin Moran, and I look forward to reading more.
    I really enjoyed this book
I really enjoyed this book, especially after spending 6 months in England last year, where I met people from Wolverhampton and other places where the story takes place. I also worked in music during the '90s and could relate to the bands mentioned. Caitlin Moran captures the voice of a teenage girl perfectly.
Touching, compelling, insightful, but also a unique view, and funny.
Not for the faint-hearted, but this is touching and, to the extent that a foreigner (U.S.) of the opposite gender can tell, an honest account of the unique path one girl took while growing up poor in England.

    Publisher's Summary:
When a young investigative reporter is found dead on the streets of London few people notice. But when another body - minus its head and hands - is washed up on the banks of the Thames, its grisly condition arouses a little more interest. There appears to be no connection between the two dead men. But, unsuspected by the electorate, there is a shocking and dangerous secret at the very heart of government. While the United Kingdom approaches a crucial and delicately balanced referendum on Europe, a group of ruthlessly determined individuals will stop at nothing - including murder - to prevent the truth from getting out.
Andrew Marr's first novel is a gleefully twisted spin through the corridors of power. Making full use of his unrivalled inside knowledge of the British political scene, Marr has threaded his wickedly clever thriller with a distinctive strand of pitch-black humour, to offer an irreverent glimpse behind the parliamentary curtain.
    Critic Reviews:
    Praise for Andrew Marr:
"Superb, colourful, outspoken, fresh and richly entertaining. Don't miss" (The Times)
"Lively, full of rich anecdotes and sparkling pen portraits. He has the rare gift of being able to explain complex issues in a few crisp sentences." (Sunday Telegraph)
"A clever and compelling book." (Daily Telegraph)

Don't waste time listening to this rubbish
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A more believable story with less unnecessary characters.
What will your next listen be?
    The Silkworm
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Steven Crossley?
    Anyone
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Anger, sadness and disappointment
    Any additional comments?
I wish I had not started this book, but it was so unbelievable that I had to finish it to discover how much worse it could get. I was not disappointed. Andrew Marr should stick to his day job
Please Mr Marr, no more fiction!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The narration wasnt very good, Steven Crossley has a good natural voice for narration but he uses a different voice for each character which becomes extremely grating and doesnt help in the light of Mr Marr's 'many' characters.
What was most disappointing about Andrew Marrs story?
As well as a story that defies belief, there are just too many characters and I found it difficult to follow the plot through characterisation. It was hard to remember what a character had previously done in the earlier pages - unless you made notes of course!
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Steven Crossley?
The King of course - Sean Barrett, although I think even he would have struggled to breath life into such a poor story.
What character would you cut from Head of State?
Im not sure I remember any of them too well to make such a decision
    Any additional comments?
I do wonder if this book would have been published without Andrew Marr's name on it. I do admire the mans political intellect and insight, but fiction is a different beast and this is not a good attempt in my opinion.
    Infantile nonsense
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This book is almost too awful for words.
What will your next listen be?
I think Andrew Marr has put me off books for ever.

    Foolish mortals
An older man in hospital enjoys the cheerful company of nurses and looks back over his life, having gradually to make decisions for the future.
This is nicely written and gentle, but perhaps too slow as there is no action or sense of urgency at any time.
    Incisive and pleasurable
What a find! I had never heard of this author till I read an essay by an Australian about the pleasures of cruising bookshops in the UK, and her mention of "Foolish Mortals" enticed me to order a copy from Amazon. Indeed a very pleasurable and intelligent read; not a word wasted, and characters that feel real. Highly recommended -- and as this is her 15th novel, I have plenty more research to do to track them all down!
    Five Stars
I plan to read all of Jennifer Johnston's books now!

Danny: The portrait of a surreal killer. Each one of us has an invisible space alien perched upon our shoulders controlling our thoughts. This is not a good thing!
Danny used to be a sad and lonely man, but now he is happy. Because now Danny has a dog of his very own. A nice big dog with a waggy tail and a smiley face. The dogs name is Demolition but only Danny can see him.
Men from The Ministry of Serendipity are monitoring Dannys every move. They have a special agent on the case, his name is Parton Vrane and he is half man and half cockroach.
Described as a nightmare journey to Hell and back, with only a brief stop off at a KFC for a quick bucket of grub and a visit to the toilet, A Dog Called Demolition is a genuine horror story. Where Silence of the Lambs and Seven merely dipped their toes in terrors icy waters, Robert Rankin boldly takes off his lurex sock and really puts his foot in it.

    Your Next Tall Tale
Reading a Robert Rankin book is like reading a transcript of a story someone told down the pub. Listening to Rankin read one himself is just like being there.
A Dog Called Demolition is one hell of a tall tale (think 'Everest') interspersed with seemingly unrelated, and increasingly far fetched, short stories - a structure that seems ideally suited to the audio book format. I've read this book a few times over the years and thoroughly enjoyed it, but hearing it read by the author has made me enjoy it all the more. Rankin tells you his tall tale in a way that fully engages you as if you were right there with him. And when it seems that it can't get any more preposterous, it does! And what tall tale would be complete without revealing that one nugget of "truth" at the end?
If you're looking to try Rankin for the first time in audio, start here. If you already have and want to hear another one, this is it. Basically, your next Robert Rankin audio book should be A Dog Called Demolition.

This began very uninteresting by so much about Carlo...to me it really dragged right from the
Too draggy from the very beginning for me. Others might not feel this way. Too much about Carlos thoughts ..not much like Fossil prior works!!!
    It's not my fault
This is different from Karin Fossums' usual books. I missed Detective Sejer - even though he was in the story in the end. This novel is told from the criminals point of view.... everything is not his fault it is "bad luck" , other people, events, etc. "woe is me" kind of attitude. Charlo Torp is the main character - and boy, what a self-inflicted mess he's made of his life. He has gambling issues - not his fault though ;) He owes a lot of money and they are threatening to cut off his fingers if he doesn't pay. He previously lost his job because he embezzled money to pay his gambling debts - they didn't turn him though - just fired him. His wife then died of cancer. His daughter won't talk to him because of the mess he has made. He has an excuse for everything - and lots of blame to pass around. He even blames Harriet Krohn for her murder
There was a little too much ruminating for my taste - but I'm just one person
    Extremely disappointed!
This book is advertised as another in the Inspector Sejer Mysteries, but Sejer is only a minor character and a boring one at that. I loved the rest of the Sejer series, but in this one we watch the murder early on and most of the novel is the life of the murderer: his self-justifications and attempts to make up for his crime. I guess this is meant to be a psychological novel. Wish I'd been warned - but now you are. The writing is fine, but I found the novel boring, especially when Sejer finally shows up - page after page of interrogation going over the same things over and over. No mystery here!
NOT SO GOOD AS HER OTHERS
I was a little disappointed with this book compared to her others. Charlo Torp was not a tragic figure but a pathetic man
who would have lived a quiet respectable life if it weren't for his (not so rare) addiction to gambling.
The fact that he was not even a savvy criminal was that he underestimated the things that could go wrong.
