Merci Monsieur Pennac ! Ce livre n'est peut-être pas pour ceux qui n'ont pas lu la saga de la famille Malaussène mais quel bonheur pour ceux qui connaissent Verdun, le Petit, Julie et les autres. Leur Papa, Monsieur Pennac, nous parle directement de ces ou ses personnages si attachants et il continue leur histoire. Une histoire, une fable comme les précédentes mais cette fois-ci nous sommes à côté de lui pendant qu'il raconte. Je crois pour une fois que l'audiolivre est mieux que lire soi-même. J'ai hâte d'entendre le tome 2.

Rags to Riches in Durban

Mr Benâs Maya Initiate 39 is a detailed account of an innocent only-child stepping out into a dangerous world. School lessons, schoolmatesâ names and varied backgrounds in Durban, South Africa, all are carefully laid out. But Maya doesnât know her mother, and the hole in her background drives her to trust the wrong people, mistrust the right, and enter an underworld of sexual assault, violent death, drugs and theft. Luckily thereâs a road back to the light. Forgiveness and healing can be found. And complex philosophy has a redemptive point in this novel.

A riches to rags to riches story, with action-movie undertones and careful explanation and detail, Maya Initiate 39 never quite answers its titular question, but it raises hope for those whose wrong choices have led to wrong destinations. Itâs an intriguing tale with fascinating insights into different lives.

Maya decided to steal money from an ALG drug sale, but was busted by the police and sent to prison. There she was ameliorated by a group of inmates and befriended by Van Brussels, a man she nearly killed earlier on.

Any additional comments?

Where does Meeting Lydia rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I would say that this would be in my top third. One reason being that this is a book I can picture myself listening to more than once. It's one where you feel that the female character understands what you, as a woman, is going through at that certain point in your life.

What did you like best about this story?

The narrator was so easy to listen to. She just seemed to get me; to let go of all my outside troubles and concentrate on the story that this author has written.

Have you listened to any of Harriet Carmichaels other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any of this narrator's performances before. But after listening to this book, I've already scoped out my next one narrated by Ms. Carmichael and put it on my wish list.

If you could rename Meeting Lydia, what would you call it?

I would never even think of doing that to an author. They have picked the title for a specific reason and since I enjoyed the book as it was why would I want to make any changes. I may not have picked up the book, and probably would have bypassed it, but having the audio copy showed me what I might have missed otherwise.

Any additional comments?

This author has put a voice to what a lot of women go through once they hit that "M" stage. It may not speak to everyone but there will be a few who may understand some of what Marianne was going through. It had me wishing that she were my friend so we could meet and chat.

It's a story where a woman is trying to reconnect with her husband but is there someone else trying to get his attention. Marianne then recollects about a friend from school that she remembers fondly and tries to renew their friendship. Isn't that something like we do when we go to school reunions? How many of us try to track some of those friends down using the resources of the internet? Don't we want to know that we still matter?

This was a great way to find both a new author and a new narrator. I can't wait to get my next read from both. It was a story that made my commute and my days where stress started to overtake me more pleasurable.

The beauty of listening to this on audio was I could really get absorbed, the narration kept my interest and it was easy to differentiate between the characters.

People and litterature

The book was offered to me. I liked it very much. The style is simple to read and yet conveys a lot. It deals with passion for litterature and stories of loves. It also tells a nice and exciting story.

Almost finished reading this wondrous debut novel and couldn't wait to shout out to the Amazon world how wonderful it is... I can only give its author my highest praise by begging him to write more (and fast!)... He appears to be young though I'm not so young anymore, lol!

I hated this book

I hated this book. Made it to the end but not sure why. Couldn't stomach millennial angst, especially as main character never achieves any maturity or spiritual growth. Too self indulgent.

Easily the best book I ever read. Icey "Mike" Roberts let's you feel the vibe in this gripping story. Written through the eyes of a true visionary, Roberts keeps you hanging on his ever word.

Disappointing

I have read, and loved, all of Sue Watson's books but this one just didn't do it for me. In fact, I couldn't wait to get to the end. Not because it was interesting, I just hoped something unoredictable was going to happen! I hated the way it was written in the first person, constantly jumping between different tenses. It was slow too, simply full of the main characters thoughts, feelings and reminisences and lacked Ms Watson's normal humerous style. I prefer a story with more action and dialogue. I hope the author returns to her previous wonderful story-telling for her next release.

Fantastic

Rosie and Mike were happy together for many years. Unfortunately he became ill and not long after his diagnosis he passed away, so Rosie has to get used to living on her own. She has her work, in the flower shop she runs together with her daughters, to distract her, but she misses Mike very much. When she's delivering the flowers for a fancy wedding she meets Peter. Peter was Rosie's first love. They met at art college when they were still very young and Peter broke Rosie's heart. He would love to see her again and even though it's difficult for Rosie she's also curious, so they set a date.

When Rosie's ready to start seeing someone romantically again, Peter would love to go out with her and get to know her once more. He wants them to have a second chance. Things went wrong when they were young, but it's never too late, they can still have a future together. At the age of sixty-four Rosie gets another chance at love. Will she take it and what will be the consequences if she does?

We'll Always Have Paris is a beautiful and sweet story. I loved that Sue Watson has chosen to write about a stunning woman who's in her sixties. It was wonderful to read about Rosie and her family. Rosie is a strong woman, she can stand up for herself, she's talented and she knows what she's capable of. I immediately liked her and loved reading about her adventures. Peter has something to prove and I was curious to see if he'd be able to. He's kind, charming and artistic and he has a great free spirit. The old chemistry between Rosie and Peter is back immediately and they are amazing together.

Sue Watson is very good at writing about families. She knows exactly how to describe relationships between people and she has an impressive way of expressing emotions. That's what makes We'll Always Have Paris such a fantastic story, she writes about both the happy and the sad parts of life in an equally comfortable way, which makes her stories warm and recognizable.
