Mixed feelings

This is an entertaining book with a good plot and the characters are very likeable. There are some unrealistic moments that I won't list because it would be too many. However, the book is funny and nicely written. I'm a bit offended by Juliet's approach in this book. She invades the privacy of people she did not know and did not understand. I think she may have lost a friend or two in this book. Other than that this is a good read.

Perfect Detective Story for Mums

I enjoy Ayelet Waldman's writing and I'm sure many mums will find it easy to empathise with the character of Juliet Applebaum; a happily married mum with a toddler and a baby, longing for a bit more sleep and the intellectual stimulation of her earlier career. Fortunately Juliet has a knack for stumbling on suspicious circumstances that allow her to put the investigative skills she honed as a federal prosecutor back to use. I found this instalment particularly interesting because I learned a little about the customs of the Hasidic Jewish community. The American narrator is very believable as the Juliet character.

Ok

I don't usually review books. A story is a personal thing to the reader and highly subjective. I'll say that I enjoyed this book even though I found it fairly predictable. Some of the characters were prone to pontification to the point that I actually found myself rolling my eyes. Luckily there were only a few points that I felt it was over the top. Despite that, it was a pretty good read. It could easily be rolled into (what I expect) would be a pretty good series with a little more character development.

Fast moving.Good Read.

Enjoyable read with well defined characters. Kendra a strong hard woman could use some common courtesy training but became predictable in her stubborn,controlling way .I will try book 2 to see if she can soften and become more of a team player.

Good mystery and suspense choice

Thoroughly enjoyed the unique perspective of a formerly blind woman using all her senses and keen awareness to find clues to solve a mystery. What other people fail to notice, the main character picks up and runs with. The main character is strong, yet sympathetic as she has to continually prove her skills. Enjoyed the first book in the series as well, but you don't really have to have read it to enjoy this one.

Awesome

I really enjoyed the characters of this book. The relationship between Kendra and Lynch had just the right amount of tension. The writing just flowed. There were no areas that were so detailed that I just wanted to skim it. I am excited to read this series

I tried to like it

I tried to like this book. I forced myself to listen from beginning to end. The storyline was weak. The mystery took second place to family problems that were never solved. I was actually more interested in the family problems than the actual murder. This book also reminded me a little of another series which involves cooking. Only that book established it's characters better. The narrator sounded like Betty White. The lead character is supposed to be 40 yet she sounds like she doubled that at least. More than likely, I won't buy the next book in the series.

Baking up cakes or murder?!?

Every town has their local town gossip and holder of all information about everything and everyone that has done something less than stellar. But not everyone is asked to bake their first cake for their new business, just to find that the customer is that town's gossip, and Daphne's cake delivery finds her dead on her own couch. This is what happens to Daphne when she moves back to her hometown planning to start her cake baking business there. Rumor has it that Daphne's cake poisoned her customer. Finding connections to Daphne's families less than perfect past doesn't help either. She can either find the real murderer or say good bye to her yummy cakes. She does just that with the help of, Ben, the town's newspaper editor and Daphne's old "sweet treat".

This is an intriguing mystery with lots of fun additions. Family relations are perfectly portrayed with feelings or love, jealously, family togetherness, and a checkered pasts. Cakes are described so deliciously that I had to take cupcake breaks throughout the book. But best of all, the relationships between the town characters was priceless. Would I want to live in that town? I probable do if I knew all of my town's secrets. Great fun to read this start of the Daphne Martin Cake Mysteries. I listened to this on audio and really enjoyed the narration too.

Not impressed

I made it through the first chapter. The reader did not have different voices for each character. It made it more difficult to listen. The main character 's back story was missing descriptive elements that made it seem real. I am not interested enough to continue listening.

What would have made Murder Takes the Cake better?

Maybe with some other Narrater I could have finished listening. But after one hour I just quit. Without even going to listen to the end.

I just love these books!

I'm going through all 12 (now 13) sequentially with no break! I have read about half but they are superb in as audible.

The book is great, shame about the narration

The book is brilliant. As full on as the other Lindsay Boxer cases are.

However the narrator is infuriating! She seemed to almost whisper at times. It was almost like there were points where she was trying to make the most mundane of tasks appear "sexy"?? She put emphasis on some weird points that had no reason to be emphasised? Not looking forward to having to put up with her for book 5. Hopefully the new narrator from book 6 will be better

Not run of the mill

Yes...some of the usual cop book things in there...but some twists that were not expected. But what I liked best was having a number of stronger female roles-

Sadly, I didn't finish this book as it wasn't enjoyable to listen to.

The narrator speaks too quickly!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I listened to maybe 15-20 minutes of the book and could not listen to any more. The narrator read the material too quickly, with VERY short break between sentences. The performance seemed incredibly rushed as if there were a hard time limit that could not be extended. The performance was like this on both my iPod and my PC.

I did fast forward to a later part of the book and the same rapid reading was still occurring.

I do NOT recommend this version of the book. Try a printed version instead.

Slower reading with breaks between sentences.

Would you listen to All for One again? Why?

Yes. The story is absolutely fantastic. The narrator does a wonderful job voicing the kids. The story gets pretty dark and thankfully there's just a few moments of sheer terror. Just enough to give weight to the drama through the entire book.

Not the best of the bunch

Would you try another book from Camilla Lackberg and/or Eamonn Riley?

I've read all six books in this series by Lackberg, the last four of these in audio format narrated by Eammon Riley. I didn't enjoy this instalment quite as much as the earlier ones but I'm happy to give the combination another chance as I did enjoy the earlier books so much (particularly THE ICE PRINCESS and THE HIDDEN CHILD). Riley is a terrific narrator and I do enjoy having the Swedish names pronounced for me :)To me this book took a long while to get going, with almost the first third concerning itself with the day-to-day lives of the series' long-running characters which grew a bit tedious, and the mystery itself was not as strong as with some of the earlier books.

Have you listened to any of Eamonn Riley???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Only his other narrations of this series which I have enjoyed. This one is up to the usual high standard.

Do you think The Drowning needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

As always Lackberg has left us with a cliff hanger ending which means, I assume, there is another book on the way. I must admit I find this practice a bit annoying but I will read the next one anyway.

Narrator Spoilt the Story

The narrator' s embarrassingly dreadful voices ruined this book for me. Why on earth he felt the need to change his voice for different characters is beyond me. The voices made the characters sound like utter morons. Other things in this book were awful too, no idea why a reader needs a blow by blow description of a pooey nappy being changed or why the narrator changed the pronunciation of the characters name, Erica was Earica, Patrick was another weird one. Don't waste a credit on this boring ridiculous book

Dark and disturbing. If you like this type of book, you will love this one! It's the newest in the Patrik and Erica series, and I think it's the best so far. The heart of the story is sad. Children unloved, tragic actions, guilt - all leading to murder and mystery.
