Very much like our culture today, the culture of Isaiah's day - the inhabitants of Jerusalem were caught up in thoughtless revelry and merriment when instead the people should have sought serious reflection and penitence. For such a sin Isaiah has only a “fearful looking-for of judgment” to announce.

The Babylon about which Isaiah prophesied was the “Neo-Babylonian Empire” which arose as a world power about 66 years after Isaiah’s death, this empire lasted for 70 years.

Assyria subjugates the historical superpower Egypt, the end time fulfillment of this prophecy will come about when the Assyrian - or northern power subjugates the West - end time Egypt…there is a three year warning as Isaiah here gives a three year warning in which men have time to repent.

The prophecy refers to the fall of the kingdom of Judah at the hand of it’s enemies originating from across the rivers of Kush. V. 1 “Land of fluttering wings,’ is ‘beyond the rivers of Kush/Ethiopia.’

Damascus is described by historians as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the planet. Other ancient cities include Jericho (in the West Bank), Sidon (in Lebanon), and Byblos (also in Lebanon). Damascus is also considered the oldest capital city.

The city of Damascus is mentioned 56 times in the Bible.
