  • #258: That Time We Watched Häxan

This week concluding Documentary month and serving as an appetizer for spooky season we watched the 1922 silent film Häxan. Directed by Benjamin Christensen the film consists of sequences that are partly of documentary-style storytelling as well as dramatized narrative sequences. The film charts the historical roots and superstitions surrounding witchcraft, beginning in the Middle Ages through the 20th century and is based partly on Christensen's own study of the Malleus Maleficarum. He proposes that such witch hunts may have stemmed from misunderstandings of mental or neurological disorders, triggering mass hysteria. Come join us!!

  • #257: That Time We Watched They Shall Not Grow Old

This week continuing with Documentary month, Conor picked the 2018 film They Shall Not Grow Old. Directed and produced by Peter Jackson, the film was created using original footage of the First World War from the Imperial War Museum's archives, most previously unseen, all over 100 years old by the time of release. Audio is from BBC and Imperial War Museum (IWM) interviews of British servicemen who fought in the conflict. Most of the footage has been colourised and transformed with modern production techniques, with the addition of sound effects and voice acting to be more evocative and feel closer to the soldiers' actual experiences.
