  • The new mayor represents hope for Torture Survivors.

    The new mayor elect visited the Chicago Torture Justice Center (CTJC) and the Chicago Torture Memorial CTJM). This podcast asked survivors of police tortured at the hands of Jon Burge and the Midnight crew: "what would you like to see from the new mayor-elect Brandon Johnson?" CTJC was constructed to provide help for people that are impacted by state sponsored violence. CTJM will capture and memorialize the events that led to the first and only reparations for African Americans that acknowledges the crimes of the Chicago Police Department against the citizens of Chicago.


    The CTJC and the CTJM offers psychological and counseling services, reentry programs for returning citizens, community organizing and court support, case management, and other programs. They hold community meetings as Realize and Implementing Strategies for Ending Police Violence (RISE). The mayor-elect has made commitments to support the efforts of the center.

    Two men that survived state sponsored torture discuss the institutional and interpersonal oppression that led to the creation of the Chicago Torture Justice Center.  The discuss the psychological impact of torture, the feelings isolation as many did not believe their experiences, and the racist nature of a system which attempted to eliminate their identity. They also gave attention to the motivations to control, oppress, or eliminate the black presence in the city of Chicago by the political structure. The officers involve in administering torture and the survivors are aware of the narratives that would not challenge police violence but support it. The events described in this episode are also mentioned in "House of Screams" by Jon Conroy.

    This is the first episode of voices of Torture Survivors in Chicago.  These men and women survived torture by a system that include Chicago Police officers (Jon Burge) and whose case was argued in front of the United Nations.  It is the first case to win reparations in the United States for people of African Decent.
